This narrative is far more than mere fiction. Are you David Copperfield . Lam indeed. The costume drama is the most traditional item on british film wardrobe. But this personal history of David Cooperfield is as fluid, modern and multicultural as 21st century london likes to prevent itself. The opening carpet for the bfi london Film Festival teamed with familiar faces and rising stars of british comedy. He found much to love in Charles Dickens most autobiographical novel. You didnt need to have heard of dickens or David Copperfield or any of them, what captivated me about the book is it is such a vibrant, funny, loving book. It is about humanity and friendship and community, and the themes are so contemporary, as well. It is set in 1840, but the people in the film that is the present day, so i asked everyone to behave as if they were in modern times, and they have an exciting future ahead of them. Like last years mary queen of scots, this film also chose colour inclusive casting, meaning dev patel got to play the leading role. The cast is incredible, and just to be able to step into the world of dickens in victorian england is a real honour. It is a treat and i hope to open stores, andi and i hope it opened doors. And sends a message to the industry to cast more minority actors in roles like this. I did not know the story of David Copperfield, i thought he was the illusionist now with the casting, there will be kids where i came from in North West London or whatever that will find a place on that screen that will speak to them, thats really exciting. As well as its youthful comic feel, this version of David Copperfield aims to bridge the gap between dickens and now by suggesting that some of the social problems are exactly the same. It is a film very much about status, especially with social media coming into play now, it is a film about community and mental health. These are things that have been before and are now. Its something that people can relate to now even though it is set in the time it is set. This is a donkey free zone this very british film should have more luck at its native baftas, not the oscars, but at a time of Political Uncertainty in the uk, the cast hope a dose of David Copperfield will be deeply comforting. What is your name . Copperfield. The london Film Festival is a huge enterprise, the biggest annual film event in the uk. Overseeing it all is the director of bfi festivals. This year 230 full length features were shown at the festival and 78 countries were represented. Give me some idea of the range of films you have on offer at the festival this year. From very small low budget local world premiers like real and the street, which are from uk film makers, to a Beautiful Day in the neighbourhood, ford versus ferrari, films which will compete for awards. How much do you want the festival to be a platform for british film, british cinema . We are very lucky. The uk cinema is in great health from David Copperfield to very new and emerging film makers, claire oakleys make up screening in ourfirst feature competition. I think thats important, particularly when we have such a strong industry as the uk has. What impact will brexit have on the future of the Film Industry in britain . I wish we had a crystal ball. I dont think anyone knows the answer to that question. But what becomes more important for us as a festival is to make sure that we are connecting uk audiences with Global Culture and also uk film makers with international counterparts. 40 of all films at the festival this year have been directed by women. What is your long term goal, is that gender parity . When it comes to picking films for the festival, we think about who is telling the story and we think about, have we seen thi before . We think about things like female splits, but there is no quota. We would be disappointed if we slipped below where we were last year, 38 , but there is no quota, we just pick the strongest works. A portrait of the super rich in britain can be found in director Michael Winterbottoms new film, greed, which stars steve coogan, a satire of the exploits of i . Steve coogan stars in greed, a fashion industry mogul who was known as the king of high street. He is hauled before the select committee, he might lose his knighthood, he throws a Massive Party to try and look like he is looking at the high street. Still still the king of the high street. Too few clothes. Coogans mccready is a ruthless driven business any superficial bully. Due to his public indiscretions, celebrities refused to come to his big birthday bash. So, he hires celebrity lookalikes to save face. Who is she . Kylie. Kylie minogue. At a push. Some of his qualities have helped him become an iconic figure in the fashion business, but his effect on the people around him is clearly negative. He definitely takes advantage of people. He is quite aggressive. He is not the nicest guy, but he is also trying to get something, he is working hard for it. It is not necessarily going about at the right way. Greed uses wry humour and witty one liners to drive home the point that the wealthy and avaricious leaves destruction in their path and their only concern is money. However, it has got mixed reviews, some critics see the satire is only scratching the surface of the subject matter but the film makers on the red carpet have a different take. I think what makes it unique is that it is quite funny. We use comedy to sugar the pill of people thinking and talking about serious topics. Documentaries are important, but unfortunately sometimes when you make documentaries you preach to the converted so having a film which entertains people are sometimes more effective because while they are laughing you might make them think. While mccready had some insults to the people closest to him in the film, winterbottom wants you to think about how your clothes are made and whether the convenience is worth the human cost of the garment. I thought it would be a way of looking at inequality, the grotesque gap between the people who make the clothes and those who own the ground. This could be seen as clumsy, but winterbottom directed a funny film with witty dialogue that did prompt me to question where i buy my clothes from and whether the seamstresses who make the garments are treated and paid fairly. There is hope for you yet, neil, this is positive reinforcement, this is me motivating you. The london Film Festival shows films which focus on the metropolis itself.
