Hello and welcome to world news today. In the last couple of hours, hundreds of thousands of catalans have marched through barcelona calling on the madrid government to free the jailed separatist leaders. Most of the demonstrations have been peaceful. However one protest has seen hardliners surround a Barcelona Police station, where theres currently a tense stand off. Police say 350,000 people have attended the demonstrations overall. 0ur correspondent Sarah Rainsford is in barcelona. The stand off is still going on. The standoff is still going on. Our correspondent has been there throughout the evening. I know it is loud where you are, you may have a bit of trouble hearing me, but if you can hear me, tell me what is happening now. Well, you can see behind me what is happening now. As stand off has been going on for several hours but in the last hour oi several hours but in the last hour orso, several hours but in the last hour or so, the police basically seemed to lose their patience with a group of the protesters who have been throwing bottles and firecrackers, fireworks, and rocks at the police. So that has been happening on and off for a couple of hours. In the meantime, the majority of people here arejust meantime, the majority of people here are just chanting their anger at the police and of course the sentencing of the leaders of the Pro Independence movement here. Around an hour or so ago, police began to push people back up the street. We are now about 50 metres up street. We are now about 50 metres up from the National Police headquarters which is the focus of this particular protest. Sarah, we arejust this particular protest. Sarah, we are just getting this particular protest. Sarah, we arejust getting a this particular protest. Sarah, we are just getting a bit of break up there. Do stay with us and stand by if you can, sarah. There is little bit of break up on your camera but we can still see the live pictures of your protest of their protest. If you can hear me, sarah, just to say that this evenings protests, not the first time we had seen these confrontations between protesters and the police . No, thats right. Last friday, there was a massive protest here in barcelona, many, many thousands of people on the street. There were scenes of violence then that really shocked a lot of people, burning barricades, there have been several days of clashes between protesters and police here in barcelona, and that is why the independence leaders here, that leaders of the movement for independence, have called for todays rallies to be peaceful. And the main rally, there were 350,000 people there, that was extremely peaceful, there was music, people singing, chanting, but here the atmosphere has been different. It is atmosphere has been different. It is a much younger crowd, who, some of them, have been throwing things at police. The front lines of those people, young men, some of them with their faces covered. I should say that at the same time, older protesters and others have been trying to get a bit when the police and those younger protesters and to keep this as peaceful as possible but every so often, the vines does break out. Things come flying over from their protesters and the police again pushed people further up the street, but they do simply seem to be trying to get people to leave this area. As far as i can tell, it doesnt seem like the police want the violence to get any worse. Sarah, do stay safe but thank you for bringing us up to speed there in barcelona. Well come back to the uk now. British police say a 25 year old man, Maurice Robinson, has been charged with 39 counts of manslaughter and conspiracy to traffic people after 39 bodies were found in a refrigerated lorry trailer in essex. A fifth person was arrested today in dublin in connection with the deaths. A number of vietnamese families believe their relatives could be among the dead. And that countrys Prime Minister has ordered an investigation into people Smuggling Networks. Heres bbcs jon donnison. This morning, at tilbury docks, more bodies driven away by private ambulance. All 39 have now been removed from the container. Theyve been taken to Broomfield Hospital in chelmsford for postmortem examinations. But essex police say identifying those who died will take time. The focus, though, is now on the vietnamese community. Ive met with the vietnamese ambassador, and we are building a really good and rapid rapport. Again, we have agreed and i have made it perfectly clear to the ambassador that at every stage, well be treating these individuals, victims with dignity and respect. But underlining all that, we dont know exactly the nationality of the individuals, but i will focus and engage as much as i possibly can within the vietnamese community. In vietnam, the family of one victim is already grieving. He left behind his wife and young son to head to the uk. His father says he feels certain his son was inside the lorry. Translation he was on that truck, all 39 are dead and he must be one of them. Hes gone now, theres nothing left of him, he died. Father anthony is a vietnamese priest whos been speaking to families whose relatives are missing. Translation they were on their way to a new life, but they lost their lives. The district is in sorrow, its a tragedy for the whole country to bear. A 21 year old is another feared victim. In glasgow, we managed to speak to a friend who was hoping to see her once she arrived in the uk. He didnt want to be identified. Translation i have spoken to some of the families. They told me their daughters and sons travelled on that day. They know about the news, but they dont want to believe it. They are waiting for a miracle. In central vietnam, another makeshift shrine set up at the home of a possible victim. Her family are also fearing the worst. All they can do is wait for confirmation of what they think they already know. Jon donnison, bbc news. He has also been charged with conspiracy to commit illegal trafficking of people, conspiracy to assist illegal immigration and also money laundering, he is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates Court on monday. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. Catholic bishops have voted to recommend allowing married men to become priests in remote places. It would break the centuries old tradition of celibacy. The vote came at the end of a vatican synod on the amazon region, where there is a severe shortage of priests. The chilean president Sebastian Pinera has promised to lift a state of emergency thats been in place in several cities after widespread protests about Living Standards began a week ago. He said the emergency decree would be revoked at midnight local time if circumstances permitted. Torrential rain has caused flooding and landslides in japan, leaving at least ten people dead. Thousands have been forced to spend the night in Tokyos Narita airport. Eastern coastal areas are the worst hit. The Prime Minister, shinzo abe, has said everything is being done to help those affected. Officials in california are warning that historically strong winds expected this weekend are likely to fan the destructive wildfires that have taken hold. A state of emergency has already been declared in los angeles and sonoma counties. Millions of people in california face having their power cut as the Emergency Services continue to battle rapidly spreading wildfires. A local Power Company pg e says it intends to turn off power in 36 counties after one of its transmission towers developed a fault near one of the fires. Mike dewald is a reporter inn Sonoma County, which is under a state of emergency. It is a critical day here in Sonoma County. The next 2a hours, as crews prepare for that wind event, with very high level winds, up to 90 miles an hour in high elevations, they are really looking to make gains, to get those containment lines down before those winds come through and potentially push it towards more developed areas. 25,000 acres is the size of the fire, currently. 10 containment is up to. There has been criticism over pg e not modernising a lot of its infrastructure and Technology Two years ago. The Northern California supplier pg e was found at fault for many of those, last yea rs campfires, they were found at fault for a transmission line failure there. This years fire, there is a lot of speculation about a 43 year old transmission line that had an error the night of the fire a few minutes before in the same area where the fire was recorded. The speculation also hit the Company Stock price, about 30 on friday, down to 5, so just more criticism as the Company Plans to turn off power to nearly a million customers here in the states. The people of Sonoma County are probably the most prepared for wildfires of anywhere in the country. The residents here have gone through this five years running. There was a preparedness event a few months ago, 5000 people showed up. Everyone is used to this, they know the protocols, they know what to do, and everyone. It is still a very tense time, people are worried, people are scared, but in the event that they have to evacuate, people are ready to go and know what to do. People are throwing around words like historic so there is some question as to what to expect. People who are even well aware, well away from the area of the current fire, are still getting readyjust in case any new fire events pop up. Obviously, we dont want to see the fire move toward the area south, some of the cities with higher populations, so, yes, i would say a wide swathe of the county is getting prepared in the event that they need to evacuate. Another huge protest in barcelona as the backlash over spains jailing of separatist catalonian leaders continues. A man has been charged with 39 counts manslaughter over the deaths of migrants found in a lorry in england. More now on that story now i spoke to mee mee voo, more now on that story now i spoke to mimi voo, an anti trafficking expert based in vietnam on why migrants decide to make these long and dangerous journeys. They dont think it is a risk. They are not really aware of the actual, what actually happens or could happen during the journey. And to understand why the uk, we have to go back a bit in history. Since 1975, after the end of the us vietnam war, there were several waves of vietnamese migration overseas. We are talking 20, 30, a0 years of tradition and culture now where vietnamese have gone overseas, worked, established lives overseas and then send money back home to support their families here. So, that is the remittance culture that vietnam still has. 0n the money, these sums of money required to take this are huge. Yes. And there is a range. It depends on what the Payment Scheme is. There are a variety of Payment Schemes that are used. And it also depends on the level or class of service that you decide to take. The cheapest class of service, maybe you pay five, seven, 10,000 upfront, and that is mostly a journey that will take place via land. 0n the other end of the spectrum, you pay a0,000. Now, this could be up or this could be in stages. But the total sum would be that much, and that tends to be the top vip service where you fly, you mostly take aeroplanes and fly. However, everybody ends up at the border, everybody will cross mostly in a lorry. So, even though you pay extra money, you are still, at the very last stage, going to end up in the same place as someone who paid a lot less. And, mimi, what about the relation, those sums are staggering, but what about the expectation that when people arrive in, for example, the uk, is there an expectation of the specificjob or is there an expectation to pay back debt . Is it more of a bondage relationship . What happens . Debt repayment, absolutely. The family usually encouraged the debt but the burden of repayment is on the burden of the person who goes. The family usually incurs the debt but the burden of repayment is on the burden of the person who goes. No matter how old they are. If they are minor, if they are older, it doesnt matter, they are the ones who are responsible for repaying the debt because they are the ones who have the opportunity to earn money. Now, what is commonly told or sold to these people is that you get to the uk, in the package, the service doesntjust include safe transportation, right . A company transportation. It also includes training to do nails and since most of the vietnamese who go to europe and the uk are young men and boys, theyve never had their nails done or done nails, so there is always this aspect of, oh, well train you to do nails, and then well set you up to do this job in a vietnamese run nail salon. They are also told that they will earn, a starting salary of anywhere between 1500 and £2000 a month and that their Living Expenses in london are only £500 a month. Between 1500 and £2000 a month and that their Living Expenses in london are only £500 a month. So,. So, there is misinformation passed through . Absolutely. And that mirrors the disinformation passed through about the risks of the whole journey in the first place . Yes. Absolutely. And the people who have gone ahead and have made it to the uk, they dont tell their families what happened to them. At least three protesters have been killed in iraq. It means more than 200 people have now died in Anti Government protests this month. The violence comes in spite of protest leaders announcing a pause in demonstrations until the new year, to give the government time to respond to their demands. 0ur middle east regional editor youssef taha reports. In baghdad, protests were met with tear gas. Those are my brothers, i come to support and protect them. If i dont protect them, i cannot protect my country. Those are my brothers, enough more than a0 people were killed in clashes on friday in the deaths have continued despite protest leaders announcing a pause until the new year to give government time to meet their demands. The demonstrations began three weeks ago against corruption and Economic Hardship despite the countrys massive oil revenues. But their anger has only increased following the response to the demonstrations. A young man took to the streets calling for his rights, he is like any young man who wants to live, he wants a job that is up to his level and age, what is the crime he committed . Is he a terrorist . If he is a terrorist, you can arrest him. Protestors want the Prime Minister to resign but in response he has promised to reshuffle his cabinet. Police chiefs in the capital baghdad and elsewhere have been replaced but with youth unemployment at 35 and one in four living below the poverty line, many iraqis will only be satisfied with nothing less than a Major Overhaul of the political system.
