Mr trump has repeated his warning to turkey not to take advantage of the withdrawal, threatening to decimate the turkish economy if they go what he called off limits. Orla guerin reports from the turkey syria border. A pullout at dawn. Us troops leaving observation posts along the syrian border. Washington says only a small number of troops were moved a short distance, but Kurdish Forces fear they are clearing the way for a turkish invasion. Turkeys president was viewing serbian troops today, an honour guard on a state visit, as concerns grow internationally about what he is planning for Northern Syria. Before leaving home, he seemed ready for unilateral action soon. We talked to the Americans Last night, he said. And well keep talking. We have made a decision, and as we always say, we might come suddenly one night. Thats a major threat for these kurdish fighters from the sdf, the Syrian Democratic forces, who have fought street to street against Islamic State, with help from the us. They have been washingtons key allies in battle but, with the us pullout, they believe theyre being thrown to the wolves. They have vowed to resist any offensive and defend their land at all costs. Their spokesman, mustafa bali, told us that an attack by turkey risks giving is sleeper cells a chance to regroup, and even retake some territory. From President Trump, a bellicose warning, via his usual undiplomatic channel, twitter. Just last month, american and turkish troops were carrying out these joint patrols at the border. The British Foreign secretary dominic raab has urged the us secretary of state mike pompeo to allow a diplomats wife to return to the uk and face Police Questions about a fatal traffic accident. Harry dunn died when his motorcycle was in a collision with a car near a military base in england used by the us air force. Anne sacoolas left the country despite telling police she had no plans to do so. Duncan kennedy has the details. Harry dunn was just 19 when he was knocked off his motorbike last august. He died of multiple injuries. It happened not far from this american air base in northamptonshire, when he collided with a car driven by the wife of a diplomat who worked at the base. That driver was Anne Sacoolas, pictured here on her wedding day in 2003. But within two weeks of crash, she and her family returned to the united states. This is the neighbourhood near washington, dc, where they own a home. It was her decision to leave britain despite being a suspect in a fatal car crash that today led to the Prime Minister to intervene. I do not think that it can be right to use the process of diplomatic immunity for this type of purpose and i hope that Anne Sacoolas will come back and will engage properly with the processes of law as theyre carried out in this country. The intervention of the Prime Minister comes six weeks after harry died here on this roadside in northamptonshire. The air force base where Anne Sacoolas drove out of is just 200 yards down the road. Harrys family say they welcome the move by borisjohnson and say they hope itll bring real pressure on the american government. Harrys parents said today that, whilst they are not seeking a long jail sentence for Anne Sacoolas, they are finding it hard to forgive her. It was an accident, we know this, she didnt mean to kill our son, it was an accident, i can forgive herfor that. But forgive her for leaving . Wed have tried to get her a suspended sentence, so she couldve carried on being a mum, so that she wasnt taken away from her own children. But forgiving her for leaving im nowhere near. Northamptonshire police today said the absence of Anne Sacoolas is frustrating their investigation. Its difficult when the suspects have left the uk and obviously causes delays in the investigation, but were making really hard to make sure we gather all of the Available Evidence that remains for us. The foreign secretary has today spoken with the american secretary of state. What started as a tragedy on a quiet english country road has become an international cause of division and heartache. Duncan kennedy, bbc news. Lets brief you on some of the other stories making the news a stolen truck has ploughed into several cars in the centre of the german city of limburg. At least seventeen people have been injured and one is in a critical condition. The driver of the vehicle, who was also injured, has been arrested. Police said it was too soon to speculate about a motive and that the investigation is ongoing. Hong kongs government is considering restricting access to the internet to try to contain the protests. An emergency law banning the wearing of face masks only stoked tensions at the weekend, and led to more clashes with police. Dozens of people have been arrested for flouting the new law. The swedish king has removed five of his grandchildren from the royal house. They will no longer have the title of Royal Highness and will not perform official royal duties but will remain members of the family and retain their titles. Further details have emerged of the European Unions objections to british proposals for changes to the irish backstop, in the brexit deal. A major concern centres on an article which says neither side would introduce checks on the border between Northern Ireland and ireland. Joining me now is priya lakhani, founder and ceo of century tech. Good morning. Nice to see you. This is something our correspondent based in brussels has been talking about, what the eu is saying is not going to work. They have battered it off again. In addition to the british proposal called article one a where they say neither side is going to introduce checks on the bottom. It would be accompanied by a power of veto and this means it is about borisjohnson getting the dup on bod. This dominant assembly since every four years so where they have the power. Actually they have not sat for a long time. The point is that would be allowed every four yea rs that would be allowed every four years to make a decision whether this should go forward or not, this new status quo. It is a contentious issue and it has to be agreed by both the unionists and nationalists. The eu is saying this is not a serious proposal. No real difference from this to what theresa may said when she agreed to the backstop. They even thought it was a mistake, this addition. The uk confirmed it was correct. They said we would not accept it if there is a power of veto by the stormont assembly. And they are concerned about this lack of guarantees from the uk about implementing checks. One of the key issuesis implementing checks. One of the key issues is the fact that they do not wa nt to issues is the fact that they do not want to have a hard fodder between Northern Ireland and the republic of ireland and, therefore, the uk government has tried to find a way around it where the will not be a physical checkpoint. They Say Technology can solve the problem but without physical infrastructures, it is not possible and this unravels the good friday agreement. It stops everything from Going Forward last time and it feels not making too much progress this time either. Thank you for now. You are back later with some interesting stories to get our teeth into including femmetech. Its 30 years since the tumultuous events of 1989, when the berlin wall fell, the iron curtain lifted and the soviet empire began to crumble. This week our moscow correspondent, steve rosenberg, brings us a special series of reports on how russia is trying to restore its influence. Today steve is in latvia, a country once part of the ussr, now in the eu, where russia still casts a large shadow. What is real and what isnt . In latvia it is not always clear. The country has been targeted by russian disinformation to so doubt, confusion. Moscows objective to discredit european democracy on its border. And here is one example of what appears to be russian disinformation. This website is aimed at ethnic russians across the baltic is part of a News Organisation which is bankrolled by the kremlin. What kind of stories does it put out . Listen to this, among latvians, says, adolf hitler is more popular than harry potter. So the impression you get when you read this is that in latvia, in an eu country, thats the ideology is thriving. But is it true . I am off to investigate. My first stop is latvias largest bookseller. How many copies off of mein kampf was sold . None. It is not available. What do you think about this claim that in latvia adolf hitler is more popular than harry potter . That in latvia adolf hitler is more popular than harry potter7m that in latvia adolf hitler is more popular than harry potter . It is nonsense. It is absolute faith. Rita iu ns nonsense. It is absolute faith. Rita runs a second book website in latvia. Mein kampf is through her site and uses it to appear to be clicking on it. But who exactly . It is interesting that for this mein kampf 70 of all cliques are anonymous and if we compare to other books like harry potter, 70 are registered users. If most of the cliques for mein kampf are anonymous, what does it mean . They could be fake us or internet trials or whatever you call them. They can use to make fake news. Definitely. Latvia was part of the soviet union, under moscows control. Now it is in the eu and nato but russia still tries to exert influence. The fundamental aim of the russian operation is undermine the other countries. Russia cannot tolerate the success of the baltics that have embraced freedoms and values of the west and can be successful. A good example is very dangerous so you should taint it. Fake news tries to skew your at the world but look closely and you see it is a mirage of disinformation. Our main story President Trump is accused of abandoning americas kurdish allies as he withdraws us troops from Northern Syria. Lets get more on our top story now. With me is aylin yazan from bbc turkish. In from bbc turkish. 0rla guerins report she said a countdown in 0rla guerins report she said a countdown to a turkish offensive has begun. That is the impression we are getting. What is the latest from turkey on what is happening . Many expected the operation has begun by now. But it hasnt properly begun. It has a lot to do with us president Donald Trumps tweets, it seems because after trump made a step back, threatening turkeys economy and also turkey hasnt found the International Support yet, it asks for. 0bviously European Union is not supporting this operation, saying they dont want another conflict inside syria and also a pentagon spokeswoman says there is a space in Northern Syria. Turkey has two recalculate the cost of this operation, it seems. So it is pausing for now and assessing the situation, especially given trumps backtracking tweets. The mind is why this is important for turkey. Will have to go back to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire to explain this. Lets keep their story short for top turkey considers the biggest militia in the Kurdish Alliance a terrorist group. Turkey says that is is an extension of a kurdish rebel Group Fighting in turkey, the pkk, for 30 yea rs fighting in turkey, the pkk, for 30 years with turkish state. The turkish state says why p g poses a threat on its border to turkeys National Security ypg. They dont wa nt National Security ypg. They dont wantan National Security ypg. They dont want an autonomous state on its border and that is why the government sees it as a National Security issue and says that it has to protect its nations security. And the public are behind that, arent they, in terms of sentiment, what the public think of this situation at the moment in turkey. To be honest, there is a divide in Public Opinion and it goes in parallel with the fault lines in turkey. People who support Government Support this operation as well. Yesterday morning, it was kind of funny, they were praising trump, saying that he has come to terms with turkey at a couple of hours later, after trump tweeted and threatening turkey, they started criticising my trump harshly. Half of society, lets say, who support government, they support this operation as well. The other half says they dont want any wall and they say that this operation will cause more syrians to come to turkey to live. All right. We have got to leave it there but thank you very much for explaining and putting all of this in context. There is a lot more detail on our website on that story. Hello there. The rest of this week is looking pretty unsettled, its going to be windy at times, lots of showers pressing in from the west, some of them will be quite heavy as well. But in between the showers there will be some good spells of sunshine. Actually, some areas see quite a bit of sunshine through this week, particularly across the east. Low pressure always nearby, just to the north of the uk, fairly tightly packed isobars, which is why it will be a windy day, and these weather fronts will be bringing bands of showers across the british isles, some of them could be quite heavy and thundery with hail mixed in, too. What you will notice, though, its not going to be too cold, thats because well have our air source of the atlantic to average temperatures by day, and it should keep the fog and frost at bay at night. We start tuesday off on a bright, sunny note across central and eastern areas, lots of showers in the west will work their way is to words through the day, again some of them could be heavy, thundery, and the showers will move through quite quickly on a strong and squally wind, gusts of 40 50 miles an hour, particularly when the showers come along. Top temperatures then, around the average, 16 or 17 degrees across eastern england, the mid teens further north. Therell be lots of sewers two and tuesday across northern and western areas, again it was going to be windy again its going to be windy and some of these are could be heavy. But central and eastern parts of the country will turn drier by the end of the night with clear spells and temperatures no lower than 7 10 degrees. So, for wednesday, low pressure again, just to the north of the uk, lots of ice about on the charts and weather fronts moving through which will enhance the shower activity. So we could start off with showers across in some southern and eastern areas on a wednesday. Another round of showers will move in, some of these could be quite heavy and thundery across parts of wales in southern england. Lots of showers across the north west of scotland, notice temperatures a few degrees down on tuesday, i3 15 degrees. Low pressure though is still with us then on into thursday, bringing in strong winds from the west and bands of showers. So again, thursday is a sunshine and showers day. Most of the showers across the north west of the uk, closer to that area of low pressure, but there will be further showers pressing into parts of western england and, too. Some sunny spells across southern and eastern england. Those temperatures a little bit higher again, 16 17 degrees, mid teens further north. But you can see on this chart that the unsettled conditions continue to end the week and into the weekend. Sunshine and showers, and nowhere will be particularly cold.
