Uk. They are fed up with the endless negotiations and endless delays. Theyve now delayed twice before to achieve what . Well have the latest from luxembourg and westminster. The other main stories on bbc news at 5 the us issues satellite images and cites intelligence to back its claim that iran was behind attacks on major saudi oilfacilities. Two former British Army Soldiers win a Racial Discrimination case against the ministry of defence. Its one of the holy grails of medicine a cure for the common cold. Scientists in the us think theyve made a breakthrough. Its five oclock. Our main story the Prime Minister has told the bbc that the eu has had a bellyful of the Brexit Process and like the uk government wants to get a deal. But his host, the Prime Minister of luxembourgm, launched a scathing attack on the uks brexit policies after borisjohnson pulled out of a News Conference amid noisy protests. Earlier the Prime Minister met the European Commission president for the first time. Jean Claude Juncker said he was willing and open to examining proposals on the irish backstop thats the proposal for preventing a hard border in ireland but so far there hadnt been any. Mrjohnson insisted there were still grounds for optimism and that staying in beyond october the 31st was completely crackers. Our europe correspondent, adam fleming reports. Are you paying . I dont have the choice. This is the first time the Prime Minister under president met face to face. Do you like snails . Over chicken and fish, the pair discussed the prospect of a revised deal and discussed the prospect of a revised dealand an discussed the prospect of a revised deal and an alternative to the so called irish backstop, a deal which borisjohnson thinks is getting closer. Well, we are cautious, cautious. But that optimism isnt shared by the people sitting on the other side of the table in this fancy restaurant. Jean claude junger has given table in this fancy restaurant. Jean claudejunger has given an interview to german radio where he says he doesnt think there is an alternative deal out there, and he warned that time is running out. The pair met for longer than scheduled, but its details not dining that matters in the Brexit Process. The European Commission said there was still no concrete proposals from the uk. The brits said negotiations would be stepped up. We will work very ha rd to would be stepped up. We will work very hard to get a deal that will allow us to come out. I see no point whatever it staying on in the eu beyond the 31st of october, and we are going to come out. And actually, thatis are going to come out. And actually, that is what our friends and partners in the eu would like, also i think they have had a belly full of all of this. They want a new relationship with the uk, they are fed up with these endless negotiations and delays. They have delayed twice before, to achieve what is completely unclear to me. Things unravel that his next stop, though, when anti brexit protesters turned up. A planned Double Press Conference with the luxembourg Prime Minister became a solo show, an impassioned one. You cant hold us hostage for Party Political gains. You cant hold the future hostage. Now it is on mrjohnson. He holds the future of all uk citizens, and every eu citizen in the uk is in his hands. It is his responsibility. Your people, our people count on you. But the clock is ticking. Use your time wisely. Downing street sources said that a request to move the event inside was rejected. A trip to add momentum and ended up being messy instead, another chaotic day in the brexit story. Adam fleming is in luxembourg for us. An emotional and angry press conference from the luxembourg Prime Minister real frustration apparent . Yeah, and the thing about the Prime Minister of luxembourg is that he is well known as being a mild mannered, smile the person, often referred to as the most easy going of eu leaders, and you saw he was absolutely not easy going and that press c0 nfe re nce absolutely not easy going and that press conference there, not helped of course by the fact that Boris Johnson wasnt standing next to him at the podium, and that has turned into a bit of a debacle. The luxembourg and britain delegations are trying to avoid a diplomatic incident and a bit of tit for tat, but they had a real dilemma behind the scenes. As soon as we turned up your to this normally sleepy Prime Ministers office, it was clear because of the huge group of brexit protesters who had microphones, megaphones, banners, music and chanting, it meant that that planned outdoor press conference that was supposed to happen a few metres away from here was never going to happen. They grappled with the dilemma of moving the press conference inside but excluding loads of the journalists who travelled all the way to luxembourg to observe it, reason with the demonstrators to ask for five minutes of that Boris Johnson could make an opening statement, or cancelling it all together, silencing the host of the event to spa re together, silencing the host of the event to spare the guest. And they ended up with what we saw there, the luxembourg Prime Minister standing by himself and having quite a go at the brits. It probably looked much more dramatic on tv where you were thanit more dramatic on tv where you were than it looks here on the ground. It just looked a bit chaotic and messy here. Very interesting. Adam, many thanks. In an interview with the bbcs Political Editor laura kunnesberg, the Prime Minister said you thought there were still compromises to be found. We think we can satisfy the European Commission and our key friends on the integrity of the single market, ensuring there are no checks at the border in Northern Ireland, protecting the achievements of the good friday agreement. I think we can, while simultaneously allowing the whole of the uk to withdraw. It will now take an accelerated timetable of work to get that done. And it may be, i have to say, that we have to come out without an agreement if necessary. The commission has immediately after lunch put out a statement saying they still havent seen viable, workable proposals. Do you feel they are listening . They have their own constraints. To have the European Parliament to deal with. I think a deal is there to be done. If we cant get movement from them on that crucial issue of whether the eu can continue to control the uk and our trade policy and regulation, which is how it would work under the current withdrawal agreement, we wont be able to get that through the house of commons, no way. And well have any mac exit with no deal on october the 31st. It is not what i want, it is not what they want, and we will work very hard to avoid it, but that is the reality. What is the broad shape of the deal you think is there. We have heard from you that there is a landing zone. As simply as you can, what is the nature of the deal . It is all about who decides, fundamentally. The fundamental problem with the backstop is that it is a device by which the eu can continue, after weve left, to control our trade laws, control our tariffs, huge chunks of our regulation, and we have to keep accepting laws from brussels long after weve left, with no say on those laws. Thatjust doesnt work. Mps have changed the law to try to stop you taking the uk out without a deal at the end of october. How do you propose to get round that . You say you have no intention of delaying. round that . You say you have no intention of delaying. I will uphold the constitution and obey the law, but we will come out on the 31st of october. How . We are going to come out on october the 31st, and it is vital that people understand that the uk will not extend. We wont go on remaining in the eu beyond october the 31st. What on earth is the point . To be really clear about this, parliament has change the law to make it almost impossible to take us to make it almost impossible to take us out of the eu without a deal at the end of october. You say that you will not do it, which means you must be looking for a way around the law. Those are your words. We will come out on october the 31st, deal or no deal, and staying in beyond october the 31st is completely crackers. Actually, that is what our friends and partners in the eu would like, too. I think they have had a belly full of all this stuff. They want to develop a new relationship with the uk. They are fed up with these endless negotiations and delays. They have now delayed twice before, to achieve what is completely unclear to me. It seems that while youve been in office, some of the things you have done, you seem to believe that conventions and rules somehow dont apply to you. youre talking about having a queens speech, i think that was the right thing to do. This parliament has gone on for longer than any time since the civil war. Its right to have a queens speech, right to set out our ambitious agenda for the country. Theres all sorts of things we wa nt country. Theres all sorts of things we want to do. By the way, all this mumbojumbo about we want to do. By the way, all this mumbo jumbo about how parliament is being deprived of the opportunity to scrutinise brexit, what a load of claptrap. Scrutinise brexit, what a load of cla ptrap. Actually, parliament scrutinise brexit, what a load of claptrap. Actually, parliament i think has lost about four or five days. Parliament will be able to scrutinise the deal i hope we will be able to do both before and after the European Council on the 17th of october. In order to stick to that goal, is there anything you would not do . Would you suspend parliament ain . Not do . Would you suspend parliament again . We will uphold the constitution and obey the law. Its very important to realise that actually, i think our friends and partners in the eu are keen to work with us to get a deal. Has there been a total breakthrough . I wouldnt say so, but i would say that a huge amount of work is now going to be done to sort it out. Am i more optimistic than i was when we took off this morning . I would say a little bit, but not much. So yes, im cautiously optimistic, but im not counting my chickens. Prime minister, thank you very much. You might thank you. Our political correspondent, nick eardley, is at westminster. Laura asked him repeatedly how we will come out on october the 31st, and we are no clearer, are we . What is your reading . The ideal solution for borisjohnson is your reading . The ideal solution for Boris Johnson is is your reading . The ideal solution for borisjohnson is to get a deal, quite frankly. That is where he has been focusing his energy today. We have seen that idea from Boris Johnson that they put the basic elements of a deal on the table for the European Union. The eu, as things stand, just arent having it because they are saying there isnt something concrete, there isnt a legally acceptable text that offers an alternative to the controversial backstop. You heard the anger from luxembourgs Prime Minister, saying that without that there just isnt an alternative to the backstop, so as things stand, there is only one agreement on show, and that is the one that parliament here has rejected. The other big question that Boris Johnson rejected. The other big question that borisjohnson hasnt rejected. The other big question that Boris Johnson hasnt answered, however, is how he is going to get round that law that mps have passed, which is designed to stop a no deal brexit on the 31st of october if you cant get that new deal and cant get it through parliament. But he did givea get it through parliament. But he did give a hint about what the government plan is, because he said in the interview, we are not going to break the law but we are going to get out by the end of october, which suggests the government thinks there is some way around that legislation that was passed. We heard from some ministers today who dont think it is completely legally watertight, that there could be wriggle room within it. That will infuriate the mps that passed it in the first place, and they are continuing to discuss tactics about what they will do if Boris Johnson discuss tactics about what they will do if borisjohnson tries to ignore that legislation, but more broadly, the government pan, its priority, is still to try and get a new deal. The problem is, you look at press conferences like that, that extraordinary one in luxembourg this afternoon, and it suggests that the European Union and the uk arent on the same page, as much as the Prime Minister would like them to be, and it doesnt bode well if simple talks over what happens next end up in diplomatic spats about who wanted a press co nfe re nce diplomatic spats about who wanted a press conference where. Nick, many thanks. Christophe hansen is a member of the European Parliament from luxembourg. He belongs tojean claudejunckers european peoples party, and serves on the European Parliaments comittee on international trade. Thanks forjoining us on bbc news. We are getting a day of very conflicting messages here, the british Prime Minister saying he remains cautiously optimistic, but real frustration on display from the Prime Minister of luxembourg. What is your reading . First, i would like to say that i find it strange to have our press conference with the luxembourg Prime Minister because he does not have a mandate to speak on behalf of the eu. Was there a text under discussion . Mrjohnson is very relu cta nt to discussion . Mrjohnson is very reluctant to give anything on that, so im not sure what the proposal was that he made tojean Claude Juncker and later maybe to the luxembourg Prime Minister. That is the question that needs to be brought to light. While mrjohnson said there will be a brexit on the sist said there will be a brexit on the 31st of october, do or die, was he perhaps in luxembourg to die another day . Thats the question i ask to mr johnson. Are you suggesting that the luxembourg Prime Minister was speaking only for himself and not for the eu . He doesnt have a clear mandate from the eu, so that is the first thing, and then there was nothing really to discuss apart from the presence of borisjohnson in luxembourg. I havent seen any real text, so mrjohnson didnt publish anything black and white, so that is what we need to see, to see what he is talking about, because no one else knows what he is talking about. People here will be scratching their heads and thinking, how can there be two such different accounts of what is going on . Mrjohnson says that there is work going on and he is cautiously optimistic, they are going to step up the work, and yet people in europe suggest that they havent seen anything. Why this disparity . Cautiously optimistic what does that even mean . For me, its very vague, what is being put out there. I think there hasnt been a major proposal, otherwise it would have been public. And why be afraid if there is a viable proposal from the uk side . I would welcome it very much. The eu wants a dealfor its citizens and to preserve the internal market, and once a deal to have a solution for the irish border. The british Prime Minister keeps saying that it is for the eu to move as well. Can you envisage an alternative to the proposal for the irish backstop that preserves those principles that you want to see preserved . First of all, i can tell you that the European Parliament is discussing a resolution in the Plenary Session about the brexit and to make sure that we want a deal for the uk and for the European Union when we leave. When the uk will leave the eu. I would like to see the same from the other side. We are doing our homework here. On the other side, wejust hear that doing our homework here. On the other side, we just hear that we are cautiously optimistic about something that doesnt even exist. Is it just something that doesnt even exist. Is itjust in the imagination . I cant tell you. Just finally, mr hansen, where do you stand on the possibility of an extension to brexit . The Prime Minister says he doesnt want one and we will leave on the 31st of october, but where do you stand in principle on that . wouldnt be the first extension, but i dont see the exact plan. I dont see mrjohnson being able to come up with a very concrete agenda when he is going to put what to vote with very clear proposals, then it might be that heads of state and government, because it is those who will be deciding about an extension in unanimity, but they would need to see a very clear agenda, and mr johnson, in my opinion, doesnt have it. Of course, we need a viable solution for the irish border. We dont want a hard border, and i have been other options discussed. There was the option that circulated but i dont like it very much, about open borders for agriculture, dont like it very much, about open borders foragriculture, goods dont like it very much, about open borders for agriculture, goods and foodstuffs. This covers 30 of the trade between ireland and Northern Ireland, so that is not enough. There has been another solution discussed about a Northern Ireland only backstop. That is probably the closest to something acceptable on both sides. Borisjohnson needs to man up and propose this to parliament. We will have to leave it there. Thank you so much. An employment tribunal ruled that nkululeko zulu and hani gue, who had been serving with the third battalion the parachute regiment, had been the targets of racist grafitti in their colchester barracks in january last year. Our defence correspondentjonathan beale is at the ministry of defence in central london. Damaging to the mod, which has been trying to attract more minority recruits . I think this will be very damaging, because they have tried to present themselves as an inclusive service. They want to attract more black and asian recruits, who make up about 7 at the moment of the armed forces. And this tribunal, though it rejected some of the allegations made by nkululeko zulu and hani gue, did find that they were the target of racist graffiti in their barracks in colchester in 2018, just before they left the army. It was a deciding factorfor mr they left the army. It was a deciding factor for mr zulu, who says, to leave the army. The army didnt do enough to prevent it, he said. The mod carried out their own internal report and found recently that there was more complaints coming from ethnic minorities, and a disproportionate number of complaints, they said, and as a result, they have promised to improve both the complaints process and diversity training. It is an embarrassment for the mod and on forces, and they clearly have a lot of work to do. Thats what happens next, they have to decide the amount of compensation, because the two men will now be seeking compensation. That amount has to be decided. Jonathan, many thanks. The liberal democrats are holding their annual Party Conference in bournemouth. Yesterday, delegates voted to revoke brexit if they win a majority at the next general election. The partys leader, jo swinson, sat down with our chief political correspondent, vicki young, to explain the policy. We have been, for three and a half years, arguing that when the details of the final brexit proposition were available that that should be put to the public for the final say in a peoples vote, and we still think that that is the best way to resolve this brexit issue, and we will continue to argue for that parliament. But if we dont manage to secure that and we find ourselves in a general election, that might be the last opportunity the public have to make their voice heard on brexit. And as a party that wholeheartedly believes that our best future is within the European Union, we need to give the British Public the chance to vote for that by saying, if you elect a liberal democrat majority government, then we will stop brexit by revoking article 50. Isnt it, though, deliberately divisive, in a way . There are people, including former mps of your party, who are saying, actually, thats going to alienate people, even people who voted liberal democrat, who do understand may be that there needs to be another referendum, but the idea ofjust blocking it outright is just not going to appeal to people . Im proud that my party has genuine constructive debate and it was overwhelmingly passed as our policy at this conference. I think that its about being straightforward and honest. I totally accept that lots of people wont agree with it, but i do think you have to stand up for what you think is right. And giving people that choice is important. And even the people who disagree with us on this, i think, do recognise that we are being very clear about where we stand rather than the fudge that you get from the labour party. Former Health Minister sir norman lamb is calling for universities have a duty of care to students with Mental Health problems. Ceara thacker was just 19 when she took her life. She had struggled with her Mental Health as a teenager, self harming when she was depressed or anxious. Going to Liverpool University was a fresh start. She had friends at her hall of residence and told her parents she was coping, but in february of herfirst year, ceara took an overdose. Cearas father iain said they had no idea she had attempted suicide. If they had, the family would have intervened. Instead, they only found out after ceara was found dead in her room, some months later in may. In notes ceara left to her friends, her boyfriend and to her family, she said she had been in a dark and isolating hole. She could barely express how desperate and how sad she felt. Cearas dad iain hopes the inquest will give the family answers, but he also wants universities to think again this are they doing enough . Should families be alerted if students are vulnerable . More students are asking for help with their Mental Health. New data suggests that could depend where you study. 110 universities responded with information to a campaigning mp. Only 26 knew the average or longest waiting times for counselling. If we have no idea how long students are waiting, then we are putting students at risk. We know from the data that the longest waiting times could be over half a term for some students, and we also know that there have been some tragedies amongst the student population. Universities say they already plan a voluntary Mental Health charter and need the nhs to provide more effective care for students. Liverpool University Said it was deeply saddened by cearas death and is working with the Health Service on changes. Time for a look at the weather. Heres louise lear. The United States has issued satellite images and cited intelligence to back its claim that iran was behind the attacks. But iran says the accusations are baseless and unacceptable. Theo leggett reports. Fires light up the night sky around the Worlds LargestOil Processing plant in saudi arabia. Drone attacks on saturday left a large part of the facility ablaze. Another major site was also targeted, leaving thick plumes of smoke spreading across the desert, as these aerial pictures show. The attacks carried out by Houthi Rebels from yemen have knocked out half the countrys production and had a major impact on global supplies. This outage knocks out nearly 5 of world oil production. And so it has a very, very important effect, and the biggest, the most important thing that investors are really looking out for is how quickly are we likely to see the outage come back online. The response from the oil markets this morning was dramatic. The cost of brent crude surged by nearly 20 to more than 70 a barrel before easing back. President trump has warned of possible retaliation, saying the us is locked and loaded. Officials in washington have already suggested iran is ultimately responsible for the attacks. There is a lot of talk about how the us could potentially escalate the whole situation. And again, i would discount that. And the reason i would discount that is because much of the us policy now revolves entirely around the re Election Campaign of donald trump, and the last thing he wants is a mega hard conflict in the middle east. That doesnt get him re elected. So could a soaring oil price mean you and i have to pay more to fillup ourcars . That depends on how long the disruption lasts. But for now, there seems little cause for concern. Theres definitely no need to rush off and fill up. At the moment, the price is coming down. So really, this is really only a concern if there is a sustained Oil Price Rise over the coming weeks. At the moment, theres really no cause for concern at all. Nevertheless, if there is long term disruption and oil prices do rise further, motorists could yet see an impact on their wallets. Theo leggett, bbc news. Dr Sara Vakhshouri is founder and president of svb energy international, a Strategic Consulting firm in the us shejoins me now from washington. Let us talk about oil prices first. Put this price rise into some sort of context for us, how significant is this and how worried are you . The Production Cut from saudi arabia is significant, it is one of the most significant, it is one of the most significant production outages in their history, nevertheless that market reaction, despite expectations of many that they were looking to have a hyper shock, it was not shocking, it was moderate. It would be much more significant if you look at this scale of the outage and the fact that saudi arabia is hosting and holding the largest Spare Capacity in the markets, that usually helps interruption in such events. Because of the attack and the suspension of production most of this Spare Capacity is out of the question, but we see that its still that market reacting moderately. The reason for that is that market fundamentals are very well balanced at the moment, there is enough inventory to supply and cover for outward suspension. inventory to supply and cover for outward suspension. I suppose it depends on how quickly that supply can be reinstated. That will be linked to prices coming back down . Of course. Major factors that drive the high were the uncertainty, and the high were the uncertainty, and the scale of the destruction, and the scale of the destruction, and the duration of the outage, basically how fast saudi arabia could restore its production is the determining factor on how the prices will move in the next few weeks. The other issue beside this uncertainty over the duration of the production restoration is that geopolitical risk factor, the geopolitical risk factor which is started from the time. That is the Iran Nuclear Deal . Exactly. The threat that it cannot export its oil, it will not allow neighbours to export oil, the risk was not taken seriously but after the september attacks and now, that market and prices have taken this more seriously. Even if we see Saudi Oil Production coming back online, and even the market fundamentals are in good shape as of now, Us Government releasing permission for release of us Petroleum Reserve in case of emergency, yet that strategy and geopolitical risk is going to place on the price and it may take a while for the market to get back its comfort and confidence that there is not going to be such incident in the future. Thank you so much. Four Million People have fled the political and economic crisis in venezuela. 40,000 of them made the short trip across the sea to the small caribbean islands of Trinidad And Tobago itsjust a seven mile journey. Trinidad has taken in more venezuela ns per capita than any other country, but life isnt simple for those who arrive, and some locals have made it clear theyre not welcome. As part of a new series exploring the global migrant crisis, our correspondent, ashley john ba ptiste, sent this report from the islands. These venezuelans are being sold false dreams and promises. Anger on the streets of trinidad. Some locals argue that the vast number of venezuelans who have fled to the small island are just here for jobs, not asylum. We dont have housing in trinidad. We dont have Proper Health care. You just bring them from one disaster into another disaster. With an election coming up next year, the message from the authorities is clear. The venezuelan problem is for venezuelans. This Little Island cannot be the solution to millions or hundreds of thousands of migrants leaving venezuela. Manuel was a judge in venezuela. After seeing colleagues jailed for not following government rulings, he fled with his wife and kids last summer. Since arriving, hes worked as a fisherman, a carpenter, and now a Security Guard in a shopping centre. Trinidad and tobago has no laws for protecting asylum seekers, so until recently, venezuelans had no rights to live or work. There have been accusations from human Rights Groups that the government has been deporting people with approved asylum claims from the United Nations refugee agency. The government refused multiple requests for an interview with the bbc to address these concerns. In some attempt to manage the crisis, the government created a Registration Period injune. For two weeks, any venezuelan could register for the right to live and work. But the centres allocated for processing were chaotic and confusing. How many people are waiting now here, where we are . Hundreds if not thousands, so many people. Yes. All i see is a mass of desperate humanity needing help. As we approached the deadline, police blocked off the line. The government declared that all unregistered venezuela ns were returned to illegal status. There is this last minute rush, and the desperation from these venezuelans is so palpable. You can see it here, just people rushing to get through and be registered. Panic, anxiety. Look. The government announced in the following weeks that 16,500 venezuelans had been registered. Thats a number significantly lower than the estimated number thought to be in the country. As it stands, the government refuses to reopen registration. Those who werent registered are in limbo. For some of those families who made it through, the permits are limited to a years work allowance. And venezuelan children cannot attend school. Manuel registered in time, but hes concerned for the future of his 17 and five year old kids. If you are deported back after year, do you know what would happen to you . Jail. Jail, prison . Yeah. You live in venezuela, youre a traitor. For now, a permit provides families like manuels some sense of safety, but as the crisis continues in venezuela, many continue to flee their country. Inevitably this is only a temporary solution that to a problem that isnt going away. Ashley jean baptiste, bbc news, trinidad. As weve been hearing the European Commission says it is the uks responsibility to find an alternative to the backstop the mechanism to avoid a hard border between ireland and Northern Ireland in order to help get a deal. Seamus leheny is policy manager of the Freight Transport Association in Northern Ireland. Hes a member of the governments business and trade union alternative arrangements Advisory Group, established to look at alternatives to the backstop. Hejoins me now from tunbridge wells. What sort of alternative arrangements are being looked at . People are scratching their heads to try and work out what they might be. Yes, that is the big question. On the Advisory Group looking at alternative arrangements we are looking at some proposals put to us from various technical experts from different fields. We have to put them to the test, the ultimate test we have to put to the government. Do they deliver at the same benefits as what the backstop delivers and will the status quo for trade, that ease of cross border trade be maintained . At the moment there is a couple of things that have been discussed. Trusted trader schemes. Technology. Three ports. Some of these ideas, we have put them to the test, talked about them, looked at the impact they will have, we have been quite decisive in our feedback at what will not work and what may be has got legs and at the moment it is proving very difficult to get something that can deliver the same outcome is that the backstop can. The trusted trader scheme we are told will not be sufficient by itself. What about an agreement on Agricultural Products and adhering to the same sort of standards either side of the border, how far will that go to help . Yes, we welcome that. Their Prime Minister said today he is cautiously optimistic about developments in finding a solution. It is good to see a softening of language, a couple of months ago we could not envisage that people would be talking about some kind of alignment on the island of ireland, that is good. The problem for us, on a typical day we have 111,000 lorries crossing the irish border, one third of them are carrying agri foods products, 111,000 truckloads of food that will not be hindered by sanitary control that this would help alleviate, the problem is we have two thirds of the fleet would still be subject to controls, that would be customs and regulatory controls. Also when we go back to the agri foods, that would obviously deal with the regulatory side of things, it does not actually deal with that barrier, the tariffs we have. Because these agri Food Products are crossing the border several times before the finished product is made you are building up a financial barrier to that trade. We have got to look at that. There are also issues around that. It is pa rt are also issues around that. It is part of the solution to the problem, we are getting there, but not quite finished yet. And the clock is ticking . Excuse me. The clock is ticking, you have got very the fleet would still be subject to controls, that would be customs and regulatory controls. The clock is ticking, you have got very anxiety levels are increasing every day, i am taking phone calls from members every day in Northern Ireland about concerns about this. I spoke to person today, peoples livelihoods are at stake, they feel they are a pawn in a game of chess between the uk and the eu. We need to get on with this if we are going to leave ona with this if we are going to leave on a brexit on 31st october, it has to be ona on a brexit on 31st october, it has to be on a deal, a deal that protects trade in Northern Ireland and protects the all ireland supply chains. During the study, researchers from Stanford University and the university of california targeted an essential protein inside our cells which the viruses need to replicate. Lets get more on this now im joined by our health and science correspondent, james gallagher. Policy manager of the Freight Transport Association it is the story we want to be it sounds like that Million Dollar solution. It is the story we want to, the main type of cold virus, there are 160,000 different types, they mutate. It is like nailing jelly to a wall, you just cannot get all of these viruses all the time. This is a clever new approach. If you cannot attack the virus, change something about the host, in this case that is as. This team in the us went searching through our sales, infecting lots of different ones with viruses, and try to figure out what it was that was completely crucial. What was it that the virus needed inside our cells to replicate . They found one that seems quite a critical protein, it has a complicated name that i will spare you. What they found was that when they genetically modified mice and human lung cells, cells infected by cold viruses in the laboratory, then they were completely protected against all kinds of these cold viruses, and other more serious viruses, and other more serious viruses more closely related to polio also. They think they have managed to put their finger on what it is that viruses need, and potential ways of denying them access to it. In other words it is the first steps towards having the first treatment to the common cold. Amazing. Thank you very much. The uks former chief scientist, professor sir david king, has said he is scared by the pace of Climate Change. In an interview with the bbc, hes warned that extreme weather events such as the melting of ice, hurricanes and wildfires are happening sooner than expected. Hes called for the uk to advance its climate targets by ten years. But some Scientists Say emotive language over Global Warming is making young people depressed. Roger harrabin reports. Wildfires are burning across indonesia. Their smoke is choking people in cities. Forests are aflame in brazil as well, and also in australia, way ahead of the usual wildfire season. Professor king says we cannot prove a link yet with human driven Climate Change, but it would be foolish to assume these events were not linked. He points to the massive ice melt in the arctic as further evidence of an overheating planet. The ice loss is right at the top of the forecast range. We see extreme weather events just rolling out year after year, with a massive loss of life. Rising sea levels, rising temperatures, changes in weather patterns impacting on farmers and everybody else. Is this a scary scenario . Of course it is. And how should we react as human beings to this scenario . We have to all pull together and understand the challenges, and act to stop it. This summers heatwaves in france are another instance of freak weather. They broke previous records by an amount that astonished scientists. Then there was hurricane dorian, ambling along atjust two miles an hour, instead of the usual ten to 15 miles an hour, and dumping water along the way. Was this devastation definitely caused by Climate Change . Thats not proven, but other scientists are also worried. David king is right to be scared, im scared as well. Whether or not its faster than predicted it difficult to say. The activist Greta Thornburg sailed to new york for a un summit saying if people arent scared they wont act. But some psychologists say scary language is giving young people eager anxiety. Children are picking up information from social media and the press and the news reports this summer, children are frightened because they see the amazon burning and hailstorms in spain and the arctic burning and they are picking up on that. How to tell stories about the climate which are Strong Enough to make people act and calm enough so they dont panic, thats a task. Time for a look at the weather. Heres louise lear. It has been hot this weekend and we have more on the way. Parts of england and wales 27 celsius yesterday, although it is cooler to date is set to return into the weekend as well. For today we have seen a lot of cloud around. It has been rather grey and threatening at times but it is not producing much in the way of rain. This weather watchers in east sussex, you can see how much central and southern parts are seeing, a bit of drizzle on the m4 corridor now, behind that there will be some brea ks behind that there will be some breaks and sunshine across northern england, Northern Ireland, southern scotland. These clear skies will continue this evening. Temperatures will fall away, at this time of year with clear skies over that means quite a chilly feel. In fact we are going to see wisely single figures across the country. We could even see low single figures. A chilly start to tomorrow morning, maybe even some Early Morning mist and fog. Nothing too extensive as yet. That should break up. We will see some sunshine coming through. Eight north westerly wind across northern scotland, and just running down the east coast, mightjust temper temperatures a bit, but further inland, highs of. Through the middle part of the week, a week whether front introducing more cloud and light patchy rain into northern scotland. At lighter winds and we have seen. Elsewhere it stays dry with some sunshine coming through and highs, a similarfeel. Into thursday, that frontal system moves away, more of a south easterly breeze, that will take its time, it will bring a change to the forecast. We could start off with Early Morning mist and fog first thing on thursday, a relatively quiet story, temperatures peaking at 20 celsius, thursday into friday, we will start to see a change and into the weekend we will drive up some more warm. The wind direction changes, first to a south easterly, then more to a southerly, dragging up some warmth across from the near continent. Into the start of the weekend it looks as though we could see temperatures peaking at 25 degrees, and that warmth is not just peaking at 25 degrees, and that warmth is notjust across the south, it is also going to drift steadily northwards right through the weekend. But on sunday there is the risk of some thundery showers. Boris johnson is in luxembourg for his first meeting withjean claudejuncker but things dont go quite according to plan. All smiles but the eu says its still not seen any concrete proposals. Borisjohnson Boris Johnson admits the borisjohnson admits the eu want to move on from brexit. I think theyve had a bellyful of all this stuff. You know, they want to develop a new relationship with uk. They are fed up with these endless negotiations, endless delays. Booing. Protestors force mrjohnson to pull out of a press conference with the Prime Minister of luxembourg who angrily attacks the uk for failing to agree a brexit plan. Its not under my responsibility if they are not able to find a United Kingdom back in london and in the houses of commons and a majority. These are home made problems. Meanwhile Boris Johnson insists we will still leave the eu on the 31st october if no deal is agreed, despite
