For the european para table tennis championships. Good morning. Theres lots of dry, settled weather through the weekend. Just the odd isolated shower, but with clear skies by day, that means chilly conditions overnight. Ill have all the details coming up shortly. Good morning, its saturday the 7th of september. Our top story. Schools should stay open at evenings, weekends and holidays to help protect pupils from crime and gangs, according to the childrens commissioner for england. Anne longfield said children no longerfeel safe on the streets, and that opening classrooms outside of usual hours could offer a safe space. Jane Frances Kelly reports. Bell rings. The school bell marks the end of the day, but the childrens commissioner for england would prefer it if pupils stayed on for a range of activities, rather than going straight home. Anne longfield fears too many children are ending up indoors, stuck in front of their computers during theirfree time, because they dont feel safe playing outdoors. They have fantastic sports and arts facilities, technology there. All of it gets locked up just at the time when children need it most. The sad fact is, we know the violence peaks between four and 6 30pm when children are leaving school. That is just when schools need to be open. She warns that in more and more areas, gangs are operating in streets and parks, grooming increasingly younger children. To help tackle the problem, she would like schools to open at weekends, evenings and during School Holidays to provide a safe place for extracurricular activities. Anne longfield says about £2. 6 billion a year of extra funding is needed to allow schools to stay open out of hours and to provide more high quality Youth Support in communities. To put that cost in context, its as much as the promised increase in School Funding across the whole of england for 2020 2021. One Head Teachers Union has welcomed the idea, saying it would require extra money and careful planning but could create time for arts and sports, which are increasingly squeezed out of the school day. The government says its making record investments in education and Childrens Services to help young people overcome the challenges they face. Jane Frances Kelly, bbc news. Thousands of people have gathered at ports in the bahamas, as they attempt to flee the devastation left behind by hurricane dorian. 43 people are known to have died, hundreds of others are feared missing. The storm is now sweeping across the us state of north carolina, as our correspondent david willis reports. Dorian grazed the carolina coast but certainly left its mark, leaving hundreds stranded amid rising floodwaters after they ignored a warning to leave. But the lashing winds and torrential rain bore little comparison to the destruction wrought earlier in the week. Hundreds, possibly thousands of people are missing on the tiny island of abaco in the bahamas, and many fear the place will never be the same again. I honestly believe abaco is finished. I think abaco will not recover until the next ten years. Like, fully recover, because everything is gone. Absolutely everything is gone. A few miles off shore, the crew of a british ship, the rfa mounts bay, is spearheading what looks to be a massive relief operation. The United Nations believes more than 70,000 people here are in urgent need of food and water. But the aim is to evacuate as many as possible to neighbouring islands, not least because those who remain face being homeless for months. Dorian, for its part, has now headed out to sea, weaker than it was a week ago but still capable of doing serious damage. The bbc understands a group of mps, including some rebel conservatives, has assembled a legal team to try and force borisjohnson to seek a delay to brexit. The Prime Minister has been adamant the uk will leave the eu at the end of the october. Lets get more on this from our political correspondent, matt cole. It is quite interesting today, because we can take a breath. Probably, nothing significant now can happen today, but we can work out, may be, what might happen monday . You shouldnt have said that out loud yeah, ithink monday . You shouldnt have said that out loud yeah, i think we may have a 2448 out loud yeah, i think we may have a 24 48 hours potentially for reflection. 0n a 24 48 hours potentially for reflection. On monday, royalassent should be given to the law that passed through the lords yesterday, having previously got through the house of commons, making it that borisjohnson house of commons, making it that Boris Johnson cannot take house of commons, making it that borisjohnson cannot take britain out of the eu on october the 31st without a deal. If he gets two 0ctober without a deal. If he gets two october the 19th without a deal, the law says the Prime Minister has to write to the eu asking for an extension up to january the 31st or an alternative date. He says that he will not do that. We have a problem here. He will either have to break his promise that he will not ask for an extension or break the law. How he squares the circle is what he will be considering this weekend. We are hearing from some conservative mps, some sacked this week for not voting with him, who are thinking about legal action in case he decides to break the law. An alternative may be that after that 0ctober alternative may be that after that october 19 deadline when he has to write the letter is that he decides to resign, Jeremy Corbyn could become Prime Minister for long enough to go to brussels about the no deal brexit. Then borisjohnson could trigger a general election, he will be hoping that he can effectively go to the people to be reinstated as Prime Minister with a majority. It is a difficult and complicated path, a lot of thinking this weekend, you are right thank you. Meanwhile, a large number of Small Businesses say they still arent ready for a no deal brexit according to a survey from the british chambers of commerce. The organisation, which represents tens of thousands of Small Businesses in the uk, has found two fifths of companies havent made contingency plans, and theres a lack of awareness about new customs regulations. Our business correspondent, Katie Prescott has more. Here in southampton, these warehouses are filled to the rafters. Meachers Logistics Stores everything from food to car batteries and takes it on to where it needs to go. But not knowing when and how well leave the European Union is causing problems for them and their customers. We are so reliant on what the changing environment will be between the eu and uk and what decisions are made, just to how hard the brexit is, but pretty much, we are there in capability, but not necessarily with the manpower well need because you cant employ people with no work to do. Its very hard for businesses, particularly those who are pressed delivering orders or dealing with contracts to try to hit a moving target, and thats exactly what theyve seen over the past three years. Those firms who have been able to do some preparations have done them. Many others have been watching and waiting, hoping for a resolution to the question, so that they can then prepare with greater confidence. And right now, a lot of businesses still dont have the basic information that they need, either, in order to take those steps and make those preparations. The government says it has put in place a lot of support for Small Businesses to raise awareness about what they need to do. Theres a website with comprehensive information for different sectors, a £10 million Brexit Readiness Fund for trade associations, and a finance council to support investment in Small Businesses. But for Companies Like meachers, theres one thing that politicians arent giving them that they want, and thats certainty. Katie prescott, bbc news, southampton. The bbcs announced a collaboration with three big social media platforms to try to tackle the spread of fake news. Google, twitter and facebook have been involved in drawing up a plan including improved online education. Technology firms have been accused of not doing enough to tackle the issue. Indias attempt to become the first nation to land a spacecraft near the moons unexplored south pole has apparently ended in failure. Contact with the craft was lost moments before its module was due to touch down on the surface. Its not yet known what happened to it. Indias Prime Minister, narendra modi, has said hes proud of the programme and promised more opportunities to explore the moon in the future. You are watching bbc breakfast. Its been another big week at westminster, with Boris Johnson facing his first major test in the commons as Prime Minister. But the brexit deadlock remains, the government has lost its majority and yesterday the opposition parties got together to block the general election that mrjohnson wants. So what happens next . Joining us now isjohn crace, sketch writer at the guardian, and tim stanley, leader writer at the telegraph. Thank you both for taking the time to speak to us this morning. I wonder, succinctly, as observers of events behind you at westminster in the past, what have you made of this week . It is a mess i mean, it has taken us all by surprise, i think. I really dont know how this plays out from here. Ithink really dont know how this plays out from here. I think that the government has been completely wrong footed. I think it thought it would remain in control of the agenda of the order paper, and that it would be able to force an election. Instead, what has happened, it is the opposition who have taken control by forcing through a bill that prevents a no deal brexit. Then, it has been denying the government a general election. You know, borisjohnson has begun to look as though he is unravelling slightly, as though he has lost control. Tim, would you agree . Sorry, idid has lost control. Tim, would you agree . Sorry, i did not mean to interrupter. I do agree with a great deal of that. I think Boris Johnson and numberio deal of that. I think Boris Johnson and number 10 thought they would start the week in charge. They had the plan for a no deal but they did not have the numbers in parliament to see it through. The idea was that they would come in and demand a no deal, not get it and trigger an election. But with the rebellion of tory mps and a loss of a majority, they lost control of the house of commons and the house of commons has taken commons and the house of commons has ta ken over. It commons and the house of commons has taken over. It does shift the argument away from democracy, away from europe towards democracy, or a suspect that is what the line will be in the next few days from government. They will say obviously we are deadlocked and parliament has taken we are deadlocked and parliament has ta ken over we are deadlocked and parliament has taken overand we are deadlocked and parliament has taken over and they are preventing us taken over and they are preventing us from seeing the kind of deal borisjohnson was us from seeing the kind of deal Boris Johnson was elected to achieve so Boris Johnson was elected to achieve so give us an election. How strange is it that opposition parties that we re is it that opposition parties that were calling for a general election oi were calling for a general election ora were calling for a general election or a second referendum for a long time are apparently blocking it. Next week that will be the governments message, get on the campaign trailand put governments message, get on the campaign trail and put it back to the people. John, is there any prospect of borisjohnson succeeding in getting an election through on monday . All of the numbers last week would suggest that he will for file ain . Would suggest that he will for file again . Umm, i do not think so. I think that bizarrely Dominic Cummings and Boris Johnson think that bizarrely Dominic Cummings and borisjohnson have managed to do something theresa may never managed to do, which is to unite the opposition parties. Boris johnson is now in this strange position of his whole stick last week, which was i do not want an election, the country does not want an election. But, give me an election similarly, Jeremy Corbyn has been the other way, i want an election. Then, i dont want an election i know, now it is coming down to a question of trust. The opposition parties are very clear about the fact that they want an election, but on their terms. And, they simply at this moment do not trust Boris Johnson they simply at this moment do not trust borisjohnson to abide and deliver the promise, or the bill, which has just deliver the promise, or the bill, which hasjust gone deliver the promise, or the bill, which has just gone through parliament to prevent a no deal. They are basically procrastinating until such a time as borisjohnson is either. To come back with a deal oi is either. To come back with a deal or ask for an extension. Tim, you are both seasoned westminster watchers. The symbolism this week, im sure that your readers tell you that they are getting heartily sick of the whole thing. Thejfc that they are getting heartily sick of the whole thing. The jfc thing yesterday, Jacob Rees Mogg lolling on the front bench, borisjohnson doing the speech in front of the police. What have you made of it all . Some of this is the product of the government believing they are on an election footing. Standing in front of police, my suspicion is that the government thought it was a great image for a coming Election Campaign but that has been kicked into the long grass and so it when it loses its power it becomes controversial. How people respond to these symbols is down to politics, there is a partisan reaction. A re ce nt there is a partisan reaction. A recent poll showed that on the major questions, should there be an election, it is a long referendum lines, but where the country is united by 75 is the view that politicians are not serving the interests of the people. A lot of these symbols, it is pretty predictable the reaction. Look at Jacob Rees Mogg lounging in the house of commons, you could say he is an arrogant stuck up a tony and, a lot of people dead, but other people thought, that is what i would do theyjust want to put it back to the people. It depends on your point of view make a lot of people did think that he was a stuck etonian. And let me ask you mentioned Dominic Cummings in yourearlier and let me ask you mentioned Dominic Cummings in your earlier answers, as Boris Johnsons cummings in your earlier answers, as borisjohnsons chief closest adviser. We heard about these advisers of theresa may, they accounted for a large extent of what went wrong. How much of this is Dominic Cummings . You may have an insight at the daily telegraph, how much of this is borisjohnson having his strings pulled by an adviser . think Dominic Cummings has pretty much been running the show. Again, this has actually backfired. Dominic cummings had a reputation as the man who delivered the vote leave referendum and acquired the status of guru. Almost immortalised by Benedict Cumberbatch in the james Graham Television show. A lot of tory moderate mps are absolutely sick to death of it. They are appalled by the way that 21 mp5, many of whom voted for Theresa Mays Brexit deal, have now been purged. Tim, a quick thought from you . We have to wait until the history books are written to see what strings are being pulled by Dominic Cummings but his philosophy is being followed by the tory party, the only way to win the tory party, the only way to win the next election is to bring the leaf vote together and that requires kicking out recalcitrant remains. The kind of conservative party that they are becoming is a Dominic Cummings approved conservative party. Thank you to both of you, we are very grateful. Both talking about you know what, brexit but making it very interesting. Heres sarah with a look at this mornings weather. In the United States they have been battered by storms dorian . Educating yorkshire, the channel 4 series which followed life in a dewsbury secondary school, became a sensation after one of its pupils, mushy, learnt how to cope with his stammer, thanks to his teacher mr burton and a pair of headphones. Now six years on, mushys life is the subject of a new musical. Our entertainment correspondent, Colin Paterson caught up with him at rehearsals. Plug it into mine, ill put some awful music on it was a tv moment which became a viral video and made millions cry the documentary series educating yorkshire. Mushy, in year 11, able to read a poem despite his acute stammer, when his teacher mr burton tried out a technique he had seen in the kings speech. Its the same moment when the trees unloose their soft arm from around you, the birds take back their language. Now, six years later, mushys story has been turned into a musical. Mushy, you put dewsbury on the map. Mushy, we saw you on tv. Mushy, youre the man. And this is the moment he went to rehearsals to meet the man who would be playing him. Hows it going . A little bit nervous how are you doing, you all right . Mushy then watched on as scenes from his life were acted out. How many weeks does it take my boys to change a lightbulb . I dont know. Never i thought you were telling a joke . Its like, how the hell has it happened . Its awesome seeing how each and every person has put their hard work in, and obviously really shown how far ive come. I tell my mum im famous, im not a gig or a freak. The aim was to encourage asian audiences into the theatre. I wanted to tell his whole story. Notjust the kind of viral video, the before and after. And this is what mushy does now, giving motivational talks at places such as this. Prince has played here, Bruce Springsteen has played here, and now you. Its awesome, i would not have thought i would be here six years ago. Obviously getting from the situation where i thought i would never speak again, and speaking at this, its awesome. His audience 2,000 people at the teach First Development conference. Hi guys, im musharaf asghar, and hopefully you guys saw me on a tv show six years ago called educating yorkshire. Cheering back at rehearsals, one important question remains. Is he good looking enough to play you . He is, ifeel like i should be calling him musharaf. Ifeel like im playing him now. Colin paterson, bbc news, watford. Mushy, youre the man. Mushy lyrically speaking is on stage in watford, before going on tour to slough, northampton, birmingham, london and leeds. Former chief constable of durham constabulary, mike barton, is here to tell us whats caught his eye. He is having a look inside the papers for us. Its good to see you again. What do you have . The first story that caught my eye for obvious reasons is this Memorial Fund for a 999 memorial in london, the brainchild of a volunteer Police Sergeant in london. He was inspired when he remembered his grandfather showing him a sapling that had been planted in honour of pc alison armitage, who sadly died on duty in manchester in 2001. It is interesting. It characterises the memorial for the police, for the Emergency Services, with the army. We are used to the cenotaphs and military memorials but there are very few for civilian Emergency Services. I am very few for civilian Emergency Services. Lam part very few for civilian Emergency Services. I am part of the uk police memorial, a Police Arboretum Memorial trust. We are still looking for £4 million to build a memorial to police at the arboretum in staffordshire. This is different, this is for all of the Emergency Services and will be based in london. You can see mock ups of the statue at the bottom. It is really topical, sadly andrew harper, he only recently was killed on duty. This is very topical. And inside the times newspaper, you have picked out a story from the dogs trust, people getting married who want to involve their dogs. What next . At my wedding, 41 years ago, we had three bridesmaids and a pageboy, that was enough wildlife for me by the way, they are all old enough to get me now what we are talking about here, they are warning, it is a phenomenon, they have not made it up, people want to use their pets more and more in the service. They are talking about, some people taking their dogs to dance lessons. taking their dogs to dance lessons. no it taking their dogs to dance lessons. no it must be true. I read it in the paper what they are saying is take them onto a Six Week Programme so saying is take them onto a Six Week Programme so they do not beg for food. Apparently wedding cake and chocolate cake is not good for dogs isnt it ok to have your dog there on the day, on a lead with a flower on the day, on a lead with a flower on the day, on a lead with a flower on the collar. You dont meet that . You are trying to be provocative. No, ido. You are trying to be provocative. No, i do. Thats the last thing i would want to do if i was getting married, to take my pet. You want a well trained dog. Tell us about brown sauce, it says playing ketchup . It means catch up brown sauce, it says playing ketchup . It means catch up i love that play on words. It says that sales plunge as mayonnaise use is soaring. We talk about the well being soaring. We talk about the well being divided soaring. We talk about the well being divided in soaring. We talk about the well being divided in all sorts of ways but i think the world is divided between red sauce and brown sauce. Danny baker on radio five had a whole game about that. Whether you have read sauce or brown sauce on your sausage sandwiches. They say that sales are plunging, they are down by 2. 8 . I am pleased to hear about that, if brown sauce were to go about that, if brown sauce were to go on the journey, i couldnt eat a bacon sandwich ever again. We dont have time for the last story but i love this, this is about back to school style, this was sparked by the duchess of cambridge. school style, this was sparked by the duchess of cambridge. I have two granddaughters the same age as the princess, matilda and lizzie. They are looking as pretty as she is. would like to say i looked as glamorous as the duchess of cambridge dressed, though, not pyjamas with a coat over the top m happens in some places thank you, mike, forjoining us this morning. Hello, this is breakfast with rogerjohnson and sally nugent. Heres a summary of this mornings main news. Schools should stay open at evenings, weekends and holidays to help protect pupils from crime and gangs, according to the childrens commissioner for england. Anne longfield said children no longerfeel safe on the streets, and that opening classrooms outside of usual hours could offer a safe space for activities. The government says its making record investments in education and Childrens Services to help young people overcome the challenges they face. They have got fantastic sports facilities, arts facilities, technology, all of which get knocked out just at the time when technology, all of which get knocked outjust at the time when children need it most. The sad fact is, we know that the violent peaks between 4pm and 6 30pm, when children are leaving school. That is just when schools need to be open. That he is now an education co nsulta nt that he is now an education consultant and joins us now. Good morning. What do you think about that idea . No one would argue that the more there is on offer to young people to engage them, to engage them with art and creativity, a safe space to study, to read, to play sport is fantastic, but we need to acknowledge that that is a massive funding investment. Ithink acknowledge that that is a massive funding investment. I think it is money well spent, and we need to look at that. The money that has been promised a safer for education, thatis been promised a safer for education, that is so needed just to keep schools open during the day and functioning and providing the quality education. So many schools are on the brink of not being able to afford to do their dayjob. So we welcome the concept, but when the school is right places for everyone there are fantastic Youth Services in the past which have been cut, sports facilities, free sports, how wonderful would that be . It doesnt all have to be in school. She makes the point that it is the buildings that should be opened, no one is expecting the teachers to work at weekends and so on, butjust to be able to use the facilities. But the point you made about funding. A lot of people are saying this morning that schools cant even stay open five days a week sometimes, or are struggling to do so. Sometimes, or are struggling to do so. I suppose the important thing is, this money has to be ring fenced. It would have to be, and it would need a lot of careful planning, it wouldnt be straightforward. To actually arrange for the staff to be there to open up, lock up, staff that have been checked for safeguarding, that they are safe to work with young people, the range of staff. There are some fantastic facilities in schools, and teachers already do give their time generously after school, a lot of them at the time that is being discussed. Not all young people want to stay in school either. We need to reach those students as well. We have had lots of e mails about this. One teacher says, i am sick of schools being the only option to fix problems with the youth. When with a public figure ever talk about parenting, instead of hiding kids from gangs, why not make the streets safer . Schools and teachers already do an amazingjob, safer . Schools and teachers already do an amazing job, there are problems with wider issues. A lot of pa rents problems with wider issues. A lot of parents are struggling to make ends meet. They want their children to be safe, but they have to go to work. I think we have really lost an effective youth service. It is the kind of conversations and activities they can engage young people in, and it is not until it is gone that we are seeing some of the impact now. It was perhaps and is the mac easy area to cut, but actually i think we need to cut, but actually i think we need to bring them back. They are brilliant people, they are so well trained to engage young people. Real role models. Some of them have had real life experiences. Lots of people on e mail are agreeing with you. Thank you forjoining us. Thousands of people have gathered at ports in the bahamas as they attempt to flee the devastation left behind by hurricane dorian. 43 people are known to have died, hundreds of others are feared missing. The storm is now sweeping across the us state of north carolina. The uks promising £1. 5 million to help the relief effort. The bbc understands a group of mps, including some rebel conservatives, has assembled a legal team to try and force borisjohnson to seek a delay to brexit. Legislation aimed at enforcing a possible delay is due to gain royal assent on monday, but the Prime Minister has said that he would rather be dead in a ditch than ask for an extension. The uks top doctors say we should take up activities such as dancing or brisk walking to help us stay well when were older. Bowls and thai chi are also amongst the recommended activities for over 65s according to new National Guidelines being issued today. They say focusing on building strength and balance can help prevent falls in old age. The biggest cause of loss of independence as you get older is actually falling over and not being able to cope. So develop the strength and balance as you go through adult life, so that you can continue in your later years. Those are the main stories this morning. It is an interesting idea, the idea of taking up dancing as you get a little bit older. Yes, bonkers my mothertook little bit older. Yes, bonkers my mother took up nordic walking and zumba in her 70s. Ordog dancing, as nordic walking and zumba in her 70s. Or dog dancing, as you mentioned earlier. Im sure your dog the macro dance partner will be fascinated. Will it bea partner will be fascinated. Will it be a ben stokes miracle to keep the ashes alive ahead of the final test at the oval . Englands brave fight to save the ashes was undone by a late flurry of wickets, that meant they closed the third day of the fourth test on 200 for 5 so still 297 runs behind australias first innings total. Andy swiss reports from old trafford. Oh, the joys of cricket in september a morning wash out at old trafford, but it wasntjust the skies that looked a little gloomy englands ashes chances were fading fast. They had to bat well and, for a decent while, they did, as rory burns and joe root combined to impressive effect. Together, they shared a stubborn century stand and it was australia fluffing their chances, much to their very obvious frustration. But once burns was snaffled for 81, suddenly, the pendulum swung. Moments later, root was following him, trapped leg before for 71. That brought in the hero of headingley, ben stokes, to a predictably raucous reception. Cheering and applause. But at the other end, there was rather less to cheer. Commentator bowled him . Jason roy emphatically dismissed by josh hazlewood. That late clatter of wickets leaving australia in control and england still trailing by a hefty 297. While stokes is still there, england fans will believe anything is possible, but they know they face a huge battle to save this match, and their ashes hopes. Andy swiss, bbc news, old trafford. Joining me now former australia bowler Glenn Mcgrath and former england cricketer Ebony Rainsford brent. Thank you forjoining us. So, ebony, these ben states it is, can he pull off another miracle . Yes, we need him to. At headingley i had more hay because there was less time in the game, just one day to survive. We have still got a lot of time left in the game. If he is going to do it, it will be in similar fashion. The game. If he is going to do it, it will be in similarfashion. I think we need time out in the game, and a partnership with him and their stay. The other issue as he is now carrying an injury. He has got a shoulder injury. He has put in a lot of ha rd shoulder injury. He has put in a lot of hard work. I was more positive at headingley than i am at the moment, he has got a lot of work to do. What if england dont make the 97 they need . If australia can pick up these la st need . If australia can pick up these last five wickets really quickly it isa last five wickets really quickly it is a possibility, but there are still is a possibility, but there are st i ll two is a possibility, but there are still two full days to go with half an hour added on each day, so still an hour added on each day, so still a lot of time left out in this game. Ben stokes cant do it again, can he quest met world cup final, headingley, if he does it again, i am taking him to a newsagent and we are buying some lottery tickets because he cannot lose. How would you psyche map, would you do . The way australia bowled yesterday, it was incredible. If pat bell is like that again, he wont cope without wickets. If they bowl the same as yesterday, there was a good chance. But if he is batting again withjack leach, he might open the shoulders up leach, he might open the shoulders up again and we can see if australia have learned what happened at headingley. You are looking more co mforta ble headingley. You are looking more comfortable right now than when i was watching you do i am going to say in the commentary box at headingley. You could not sit still. I think Alistair Cooke was similar. It was right down to the wire. And what happened, what we are about to see, 99 times out of 100, if nato nine takes it the game is over. And when he didnt, you see the reaction. How difficult is it to watch it and not be playing it . reaction. How difficult is it to watch it and not be playing it . I am terrible at watching my own team play. I get more nervous than i ever got playing. You are up in the box, i have been retired for 12 years, but you still feel everything. You probably feel the loss is more so than the winds. And over here, against the auld enemy. Im sure the english players feel the same way. We spoke to Jonathan English players feel the same way. We spoke tojonathan agnew an hour ago, we talked about steve smith and how amazing he is. Especially coming back after what happened with jaffer archer. He said the england players have been told not to engage with him, dont talk to him. They need to mix it up a bit. I think we are trying absolutely everything we can. They have tried keeping quiet, they have tried chipping in. He isjust an incredible character. Hearing how he celebrated that double century, he celebrated that double century, he had been using this rain app to help him sleep, he is finding ways to perform. Chocolate never helped me it didnt help me score any more runs, but full steve smith. would thoroughly recommend chocolate. And he would think he would need eight rain app in manchester . But the weather might be on australia s side now. Manchester . But the weather might be on australia s side now. Yes, the wind was so bitterly cold but yesterday wasnt so bad. The next two days are meant to be fine, so there is enough time in the match to get a result, hopefully in australias favour. Maybe we just need the weather to freeze the australian bowlers. They were all looking pretty cold the other day, lots of jumpers on. Any predictions question might well be get to five days, or do you think the ashes are. I think we will get it into five days, unless something unbelievable happens this morning. I have had to adapt my prediction at every test match, but i think 3 1 is on the cards. I am going to hold out for a draw on this test match. on the cards. I am going to hold out for a draw on this test match. I am trying to be positive. England fans will love that. Enjoy today. Dont forget, you can listen to Live Commentary from old trafford on test match special on 5 live sports extra, or via the bbc sport website and app, where you can also watch highlights throughout the day. Next to the race to reach, euro 2020, next summer and gareth bale, snatched a crucial late victory for wales, in their qualifying match against azerbaijan in cardiff. Wales went ahead thanks to a bizarre own goal from, pavlo pashayev, who somehow put bales cross past his own keeper. But azerbaijan levelled in the second half and there were only seven minutes left when bales towering header just about crossed the line for victory, to move wales to third. Scotlands hopes of reaching euro 2020 are dangling by a thread after they lost 2 1 to russia at hampden. John mcginn got his side off to the perfect start with his first goal for his country. But russia were level by half time, and another well worked move ended with Steven Odonnell deflecting the ball into his own goal, to leave scotland fourth below kaza kstan. England manager Gareth Southgate says his side still have everything to prove as they take on their groups bottom side bulgaria at wembley this afternoon. England have won two out of two qualifiers so far. After bulgaria, they play kosovo at st marys on tuesday. Victories in both games would make qualification for next years tournament, a near formality. Fitting in at school is hard enough, but imagine growing up above a chinese takeaway where your parents dont speak a word of english. Author sue cheungs new book is the story of a difficult childhood and an insight into life on the other side of the counter. Suejoins us now. You worked in the chinese takeaway, didnt you . And this has been the inspiration for the buck. I did, yes. So it is an almost true story . Yes, about 80 true, and the bits that are made up are really the anecdotes that i brought together to make it into a narrative. Yes, this book, chinglish, is about my life growing up in a chinese takeaway in coventry in the 805, and it is about the culture clashes that happened, and about trying to fit in. When you area and about trying to fit in. When you are a teenager, or you want to do is sit in and be like everybody else. I wa nted sit in and be like everybody else. I wanted to be like all the western kits, look like madonna, dye my hair and that sort of thing. But it wasnt going to happen because i look different and i left above the shop and a chinese takeaway. Did you find that difficult with friends at school . Yes, there was no living room so we couldnt bring friends home. If you are going to bring anyone back, it wasjust home. If you are going to bring anyone back, it was just the ta keaway anyone back, it was just the takeaway kitchen. There was a chair and table, watch my parents cooking, 5aid and table, watch my parents cooking, said it and table, watch my parents cooking, 5aid itju5t and table, watch my parents cooking, said it just wasnt and table, watch my parents cooking, 5aid itju5t wasnt conventional. I didnt bring any friends back until i was about 14 or 15. Even then, it was a friend that i knew had the stamina to put up with my very embarrassing parents. How closely doe5 embarrassing parents. How closely does the start of your book resemble your life . Absolutely the same. The way i wrote the book in a diary format, is a little bit of a nod to adrian cameco mole because i related to him back in the 805. He was a bit downtrodden, and outcast and i totally related to that adrian mole. Also, i have to say that the book overall is a very funny story. Thats the way i coped with it, just by glo55ing over it with humour. Because you went to some really tough grown up staff early. Because you went to some really tough grownup staff early. Thats right, yes. The issues tackled in the book involve things like bullying, racism, you know, it touches on Domestic Violence as well. General teenage angst, first love and all that sort of thing, but it isnt all doom and gloom. It is very funny. And it is illustrated by me as well, so there are some funny doodles in there. One of the things you talk about is having a baby at what age . Yes, i was 19. Chinglish expands three years, from 13 16, i dont want to spoil the ending but i end up going to london with grand ideas of becoming an artist, but i end up pregnant and living in a squat when i was 19. That was as a result of coming from a bit of a dysfunctional family, a takeaway environment, with parents that dont talk to you and teach you how to stand on your own two feet in the big, wide world. So off i trot and get it all wrong, and what a surprise, iam. Get it all wrong, and what a surprise, i am. you are key to helping to run the business as the only one who could speak english. You are often called upon to ring the police. Yes, thats right. Massive communication problems. My mum hardly speaks english. My dad speaks english, but doesnt like speaking. And me and my brothers and sisters can hardly speak any chinese. It is really weird because most british Chinese People speak cantonese, but for some weird reason my parents spoke a rarely spoken dialect, so not only do we hardly know any chinese, we only know this dialect. So when friends and family would visit, they would say that our chinese is terrible. And my mum would say yes, they are useless. And we would say, thats not our fault. As you have got older, do you feel more positive about your heritage . Very often, as a teenager you want to fit in, but. Yes, that was only a recent thing. My agent approached me to write this book, and i said no way at first because i really wanted to sweep it all under the carpet. I spent my whole adult life doing that, and i really didnt want to write this book because it was taking it all back up again. So, yes, what was the question . Sorry i cant remember. Your heritage. Yes, some of the research i did. I thought at the time that i was the only Family Living above the takeaway. But you are never alone, are you . Thats right. Thank you for coming to talk to us, we do appreciate it. And her book is called chinglish. Have a great breakfast. Goodbye. This is bbc news.
