If you want some in the garden, not necessarily a bad thing. Targeting Northern Ireland and western scotla nd Northern Ireland and western scotland tomorrow with occasionally heavy rain and may be rumbles of thunder, pushing over scotland during the day and into wales and western parts of england and the midlands, but much of Eastern England will remain dry. The further south you might not see much rain at all. Still warm in the hazy sunshine in Eastern England but elsewhere it will feel cooler with the rain and the breeze. The big picture again, wednesday night into thursday, the weather system approaching its way south and it will have some rain across parts of the eastern and south east of england, clearing two sunny spells, and behind that the showers following to Northern Ireland and into scotland, heavy and possibly thundery, baby a few of those reaching towards north west england, may be. Another wet weather system coming our way on friday into friday night and for the weekend at some sunny spells but the chance of a shower that could be heavy and possibly thundery. Hello and welcome to sportsday. Imjohn watson. The headlines. The stage is set as royal portrush prepares to host the open championship for the first time in 68 years. Rory mcilroy tells us he hopes to make home advantage count. And im in liverpool on day five of the netball world cup where australia and new zealand continue their unbeaten record at this tournament. Also ahead. How sundays world cup win carried extra significance for the man who masterminded it all. Sometimes you get the rub of the green and you feel there is someone up green and you feel there is someone up there looking down on you and i felt that for me and all english cricket that day. Hello and welcome to sportsday. The big events come thick and fast. The 148th open championship begins in royal portrush on thursday, the biggest sporting event to be staged in Northern Ireland. In what will be a home tournament for former winner rory mcilroy. 0ur reporter Steven Watson is in county antrim. This is the biggest sporting event ever staged in Northern Ireland, the open was held here once before back in 1951 open was held here once before back in1951 and open was held here once before back in 1951 and after a 68 year wait it is back. The tournament is com pletely is back. The tournament is completely sold out, a first in the 0pen completely sold out, a first in the open championship history and an indicator perhaps of the importance of the event to the country which has been truly energised by the event. For many years the organisers refused to consider portrush as the venue refused to consider portrush as the venue because of many reasons, the political climate, the trouble is, the lack of infrastructure inside and outside the course and the logistical challenge but then came the Peace Process and an incredible run of form by the irish golfers. Patrick harrington the winner of two majors, grim and ben came along in 2010 followed by roy mcavoy and darren clarke. That was the real ca ta lyst darren clarke. That was the real catalyst for the return of the open according to the 2014 open champion. Im proud to feel that i may have played some small part in getting the championship to Northern Ireland with the success of myself and darren and Patrick Harrington is well, that was part of the reason they wanted to come here. And all they wanted to come here. And all the people at port rush that have done a wonderfuljob to facilitate the rna and bring the championship year. It is spectacular, unbelievable. Certainly a different golf course than the one i grew up playing. I remember staying close by and then coming to watch my dad play and then coming to watch my dad play and there was a little chipping green beside the clubhouse and i would spend all day around that. It has been a long time coming, it has been coming to portrush for some time and there has been a huge build up andi time and there has been a huge build up and i tried to put it out of my head for a while. Now youre here and you see everything coming to fruition, it is hard not to think about it. Going out on that green and winning the open winning the open anywhere special but obviously being from here and having the memories i have on this course, it would mean that little bit more. And if you connect the climate jab on sunday evening that would be the real team. If sunday evening that would be the realteam. If he sunday evening that would be the real team. If he could lift the claret jug. Real team. If he could lift the claretjug. The open champion from 2011 daryl clark has the honour of hitting the opening t shirt. That tee shot. And that local knowledge will prove invaluable when negotiating the course. And world number one Brooks Koepka has the ideal caddie in the shape of 41 year old ricky elliot who hails from portrush and has been on his bag for the last six years. And there are others who want the koepkas inside track. Ijust i just say you tell me what to do, just let him figure it out. He knows the spots to miss and the spots to come in from with a different hole locations and different winds. It will definitely have a bit more confidence having him this week on the back. Knowing this golf course so the back. Knowing this golf course so well. I look forward to it. Congratulations on another great finish. What he has done in the last major championships, it has been just unbelievable. So consistent and so just unbelievable. So consistent and so solid. He has been in contention to win in every major championship. I asked would you mind if i tagged along for a practice round i have heard nothing and as weve seen how the course is looking there with steven, worth reminding ourselves of how it looked all those years ago when it staged the championship for the first time in 1951. The open Golf Championship is held for the first time in ireland at portrush for the bobby locke, champion two years running, tries for his hat trick for the abedi, an eagle, no, just a single wanting to watch. Max faulkner of Great Britain is on top form playing superb golf. Well done and Better Weather next time a 22 year old has his dream come true as brigadier martin hands over the trophy. And dont forget you can watch the open. Theres a daily highlights programme on bbc two, theres live text updates and in play clips on the bbc sport website, with Live Commentary on bbc radio 5 live as well. Now, Frank Lampard is back in familiar surroundings and adamant chelseas transfer ban will not hinder their title challenge. They cant sign players over the next two windows, not that lampard feels they need to. We cannot bring players in, we know that, this year. But im with the squad and determine for us to be successful. I know the club and the players well, i have my own way but i want to work with the players and i have to say in one week that we have been training i have been very happy with the attitude and qualities of the players. And one of those players is striker 0liver giroud, whose goal helped chelsea beat arsenal in the Europa League final, he says his old team mate Laurent Koscielney is very hurt by his row with the club. He could face disciplinary action for refusing to travel on their us tour. He is very hurt by what is happening. He is an emotional person andi happening. He is an emotional person and i hope that both sides will find the best agreement. I know the club gave him the opportunity to play at arsenal and it was a big opportunity for him to show his quality in the premier league and i think he has a lwa ys premier league and i think he has always been grateful for that. Premier league and i think he has always been gratefulfor that. And respectful to the club. I do not understand how come we are getting to the situation. I feel very sad for him. Newcastle midfielder matt ritchie said hes surprised and disappointed to see rafa benitez leave the club. Steve bruce has been approached over the vacancy having resigned as manager of Sheffield Wednesday yesterday. To see the manager leave the disappointing because he had a good rain with the club but it was a decision made obviously between the manager himself and the club owners. So it was out of our hands. We now have to look forward to a new manager and a new season. It is a strange situation even for a manager to go in the last year of his contract and it is not something that happens often so this is the First Experience i have had of it. Well the man he replaced rafa benitez lost for the first time as manager of chinese club dalian yifang, losing to League Leaders guangzho evergrande. Former barcelona player paulinho with a hat trick in a 41 win, benitez had won his first two league games in his new role. To the netball world cup where Northern Ireland have suffered another defeat, thrashed by new zealand in their latest group game. Kate grey is there. A big loss for Northern Ireland and theyre out of the tournament now . It means that they pull out of the top eight placings at the tournament and that is what they aimed expected really to beat new zealand, they are seeded number four in the tournament and they are very well seasoned team. They were brilliant out on court today, in a class of their own. They have a very experienced line up in theirteam. Own. They have a very experienced line up in their team. Laura own. They have a very experienced line up in theirteam. Laura langman who played for new zealand in 2005 in centre court and maria, an absurd professional. It was always going to bea professional. It was always going to be a tough match for Northern Ireland but it was a heavy defeat, 7728 ireland but it was a heavy defeat, 77 28 for the pair will be disappointed by this tournament, theyve only won five, when much of their five here theyve only won five, when much of theirfive here in liverpool and thatis theirfive here in liverpool and that is something they will have to look at, they are a developing team and will hope to come back stronger in later tournaments. And weve had a couple of one sided matches today, ivy is affecting the tournament, is it affecting the interest in the tournament as a whole . There has been a lot of one sided matches especially in the early stages and some teams winning by 50, 60 goals which does not look great from a competitive netball point of view. It has been a concern particularly when you think australia are the best tea m when you think australia are the best team in the world and have been for a long time but there are teams closing down on them. England won the Commonwealth Games last year for example. But those placed six and below it maybe cannot keep pace with the top five teams, many of them do not have the funding and professional leagues to boost that and that is a concern for the organisers to ensure that we have high quality netball. They will have to address that when it comes to deciding if they need 16 teams in later well caps. It is a packed schedule, players having to play five matches in a row, is that affecting things, we would not see that in other sports . This has been a concern raised by the australian head coach Lisa Alexander who said is it right that the teams play five matches on the trot. You would not see that in a football or cricket world cup. 0ne see that in a football or cricket world cup. One of the reasons is because there is the smaller nations like zimbabwe and barbados cannot afford to be here for any longer than two weeks so they have got to condensed the programme down. The issue then is ways of whether players can handle playing five matches on the chart with regards to injury, the physicality of the game. England have lost a player as a result of the physicality of the game and result of the physicality of the game and i have to progress with only 11 players. 0bviously game and i have to progress with only 11 players. Obviously not ideal at this high level especially into the final weekend of the tournament. So england are still in a great position, they play Trinidad And Tobago tomorrow and if they win they will progress to the semifinals, a great thing for them through this tournament. And we will be back with that tomorrow. A quick look at the days other stories. British boxer amir khan claims hes agreed a deal to fight Manny Pacquiao in saudi arabia. He won the Wbc International welterweight title beating billy dib in jeddah on friday. Ajax defender matthias de ligt is on the brink ofjoining italian champions juventus for £67. 5 million. He won gold in cairo in 2005, and also competed at two Olympic Games the cause of death has not been disclosed. The england womens squad for the upcoming test has been announced in what is a must win if theyre to keep hopes of victory in the multi format series alive. Ki rsty Kirsty Gordon and Katherine Brunt have been named in the squad. England need to win this test and all three t20 internationals that follow if they are to beat australia who hold the ashes after victory on english soil in 2015 and a drawn series in 2017. Meanwhile Andrew Strauss the man who masterminded englands world cup success said previous failures were behind the push to prioritise white ball cricket and the 50 over game. Natalie pirks spoke with englands former director of cricket. Ijust think we i just think we need to ijust think we need to prioritise white ball cricket. It was all about test cricket and then the world cup would come along and we would be playing the wrong style and we would give ourselves a slap on the wrist and say that was not good and then just repeat the same mistake next time the tournament came along. I just felt with the world cup in 2019 in england we could not do that. I would have been angry with myself if we had done that again. It was about playing a form of the game and style of the game that was going to be much more aggressive and positive and one that was able to put opposition teams under more pressure. And from that point onwards it was about getting a captain and coach that could role model and play that out. My involvement started with the idea and finished with you guys grabbing that with both hands. Eoin morgan and trevor bayliss. Theyve done it exceptionally well. How important is eoin morgan to the team . We would not have won the world cup without him, but is
