The husband of murdered mpjo cox has resigned from two charities he set up in her memory after allegations of Sexual Harassment were published in the mail on sunday. Mr cox denies assaulting a woman at Harvard University in 2015 but admits to inappropriate behaviour while working for save the children. 0ur Political CorrespondentSusana Mendonca reports. The murder ofjo cox in 2016 shocked the nation. The labour mp, who was also a mother of two small children, was murdered by a far right extremist during the Eu Referendum campaign. After her death, her husband brendan became a prominent campaigner against extremism and went on to help set up two organisations thejo Cox Foundation and more in common. Now he has resigned from both following allegations in the mail on sunday that he sexually harassed female colleagues while working for the charity save the children. In a statement, he said a source close to mr cox told the bbc that he had never sexually assaulted anyone, and that the allegations were exaggerated. Thejo Cox Foundation said that mr cox was admired by staff there for the integrity, commitment and dedication he had shown to creating a positive legacy for his jo. Susana mendonca, bbc news. The new education secretary says he wants to see more variety in University Tuition fees in england, rather than what he says is almost all institutions charging exactly the same price. Interviewed in the sunday times, damian hinds also suggests the benefit of a University Course to the economy could help decide future fees. It comes as he and the Prime Minister announce a review into University Funding today, as Simon Clemison reports. Many of todays students were not born when University Tuition fees were first introduced. But 20 years on, the link between getting a degree and paying towards the cost of it remains, and that has meant big sacrifices for some. And my parents sold their house so i could come to uni im the first one in my family. Looking into it, there were lots of, like, different aspects of the debt and how much youre paying back, obviously, in the long run, and itsjust a really prospect. The government still backs the idea that students should contribute towards the cost of their Higher Education, and thats one of the areas that will covered by its major review of student finance. It comes as a committee of mps coming today says says current Interest Rates on loans of up to 6. 1 are questionable. With students in england accumulating more than £5,000 in charges while they are still studying. The average debt for graduates totalling more than £50,000. They need to look at grants available to help the poorer students, they need to look at the level of interest that is currently being applied to Student Loans, and they need to rebuild some public trust and confidence in the fairness of the system by ironing out some of these real injustices at the heart of the way that the system works. Education secretary damian hinds suggests the review will consider extra subsidies for expensive subjects such as science and engineering. It could make it easier for universities to lower the cost of courses offered by the departments. The income threshold for repayment would also be considered, as will as the length of time before the loans are written off. But with the outstanding amount due to hit £160 billion by 2021, labour argues the system is unsustainable. Simon clemison, bbc news. Some of the survivors of wednesdays School Shooting in florida have taken part in a rally to demand tighter gun controls in the us. Thousands of people gathered outside the Court Building in fort lauderdale, a short distance from the school where a former student killed 17 people. Laura westbrook reports. Chanting no more outside the federal courthouse in fort lauderdale, this was the message to lawmakers. Among the protesters was emma gonzales, who took cover on the floor of her schools auditorium as a gunman started shooting. She had this to say to donald trump. If the president wants to come up to me and tell me to my face that it was a terrible tragedy and how it should never have happened, and maintain telling us how nothing is going to be done about it, im gonna happily ask him how much money he received from the National Rifle association. Cheering and applause. What shes referring to is the millions of dollars the nra has given towards the trump campaign. On a visit to the hospital where the victims of the attack are being treated, the president once again made no mention of guns or gun control. Instead, he says the problem is mental illness. When somebody infringes a right for persons in this country to keep and bear arms, then its an infringement upon our rights as a violation of our civil liberties, now we have a bigger problem. We will be spending our times at funerals but after yet another School Shooting, anger among the Younger Generation is rising. In fact, students across the country are planning a mass walkout of schools in april the anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre. They are demanding adults listen to them and tighten gun control. Laura westbrook, bbc news. President trump has criticised the fbi forfailing to stop the attack. In a tweet, he said the bureau was spending too much time trying to prove collusion between his Electoral Team and russia, and that investigators should get back to basics. Israel says its carried out heavy air strikes on hamas targets in the gaza strip. The military says it targeted 18 sites used by the palestinian group, including an arms factory. They say its in response to a bomb attack near the border which injured four israeli soldiers. Doctors in gaza say two palestinians were injured and three are missing. Nearly 200 british women from the stage, film, and tv have launched a fund ahead of tonights baftas, demanding the eradication of Sexual Harassment. Kate winslet, Emma Thompson and Dame Kristin Scott thomas, are three of the women who signed an open letter calling for the end of harassment and abuse. Emma watson has donated one Million Pounds to the fund, and Keira Knightley and Tom Hiddleston have each given 10,000 pounds. Food could become more expensive in british shops in the event of a hard brexit, according to a committee of mps. Mps on the environment, food and Rural Affairs committee predict that would be the result of trading under World Trade Organization tariffs. It also warned against accepting lower food standards to secure new free trade deals. Our Business Correspondent joe lynam reports. The peace and bucolic splendour of uk farmland could be dramatically upset if britain fails to get a comprehensive free trade deal pressed bricks that. But for post that. The key groups as consumers may also end up paying more forfood if the uk reference to world trade 0rganization rules. The Environment Food and Rural Affairs committee of mps says a so called hybrid would have a devastating effect on rural communities. It is because 60 of uk food exports go to the eu and they could face much higher tariffs. The Committee Also said that britain should not pollute its own high food standard in order to find new global trade deals such as one with the us. We go into a sort of wto situation where there are tariffs on imported food,it where there are tariffs on imported food, it will drive food prices up and to some commodities that will actually suit farming but perhaps not the consumer if they have to pay more for theirfood. Not the consumer if they have to pay more for their food. But the government has sought to soothe those concerns. It said that leaving the eu gave the uk a golden opportunity to secure ambitious free trade deals while supporting our farmers free trade deals while supporting ourfarmers and free trade deals while supporting our farmers and producers. Free trade deals while supporting ourfarmers and producers. It free trade deals while supporting our farmers and producers. It said he would not compromise on the uks high environment will all welfare standards. Joe lynam, bbc news. It was a super ssaturday in pyeongchang yesterday, with three women giving team gb their most successful day at a Winter Olympics. Lizzy yarnold won gold in the skeleton and laura deas came third, while izzy atkin claimed Great Britains first ever medal in a skiing event with a slopestyle bronze. And if youre wondering how our bbc Commentary Team keep their composure on days like yesterday, the answer is. They dont. Flock goes fourth yarnold wins gold again laura deas have won bronze as well Lizzy Yarnold, what a performance think that was a chair that went flying. That wasjohn hunt on the microphone alongsidejothackson and amy williams, struggling to contain their excitement as austrias janine flock slipped into fourth place, sealing those medal places for Lizzy Yarnold and laura deas. As you are saying earlier, they were effectively celebrating the demise ofa effectively celebrating the demise of a non british competitor. That is fine john hynes is one of our best commentator and is probably known to our horseracing commentator and is brilliant and can put his hand to anything. That was almost a sport in itself, dancing around the commentary box. Thats terrific. I cannot see that enough and coming up later, well be speaking to all three Medal Winners. Kat downes will be live in pyeongchang with izzy atkin just after half past seven, and with Lizzy Yarnold and laura deas at around half past eight. To stay with us for all of that, and we are keeping an eye on the womens curling. Will let you know what is happening a bit later. It is 7 11 p. M. Good morning. Am. Tuition fees and Student Loans will be up for debate in a major government review of University Funding thats being announced today. The cost of a course and the likelihood of it producing high earning graduates is expected to be considered too. Nick hillman, director of the Higher Education policy institute, joins us from our 0xford studio. Good morning to you. Good morning. What should the government be considering here . It would appear they are willing to take a look at all sorts of aspects of the whole business of funding Higher Education in england. If you were still working in government what would you suggest they do at the end of the process . Suggest they do at the end of the process . Will find out in 24 hours who was doing the review and what its terms of reference bar but in my opinion, it should not spend too much time looking at £9,000 fees for full time undergraduate school leavers. Because that bit of the system is actually working quite well. We have a higher proportion of 18 your role is going to university than ever before. I think it should look at things like part time student funding, part time student numbers have more than halved in recent yea rs. Numbers have more than halved in recent years. It is also, we think, going to be a church refunding review which means that further education colleges will be brought in as well and that is what we are a good idea. I perform treasury. You talk about how it brought in about £9,000 may be working and i suspect there may be some tunes walking at that description in terms of the size of the debt they are left with so size of the debt they are left with so the challenge for the government would be the labor would get rid of tuition fees entirely and anything the government suggest, however mel leaning overfour the government suggest, however mel leaning over four well meaning the government suggest, however mel leaning overfour well meaning and good for the exchequer will by tinkering in the margins. That is true, students dont like the fact that the fees went up so much but we need to remember all of the money is being spent on their education. We have some of the best universities in the world and some of the best facilities and lecturers in the world. If we spend less on educating people, and the quality of education will be less good. If i was going to do one thing the those sort of archetypal young full time undergraduates, it would actually be to look at their living costs because what they tell us, they worry about paying next weeks rent more than about paying back debt when they are in the labor market and only once they are on good earnings, a few years down the line. You touched on this a few minutes ago, butjust to dive into the detail, we saw in labor mp talking earlier about the idea of ironing out injustices as part of this shakeout. Where should the focus b . Where would you hope to go to a bit more detail if this all end up at the end of the whole business of this review . There is lots of places, one is part time students, another is the living costs of stu d e nts another is the living costs of students from poorer backgrounds, and another thing that really matters is how many places there are in the system. Every time the cost to what the taxpayers, of each university place, the chances are the government will come along and say we are only going to let fewer people go to university in the future and that really matters to macro, and then there is the whole further education, further education colleges have been hit hard in recent yea rs colleges have been hit hard in recent years and they deliver lots of Higher Education, they are not patched with universities, but they do deliver Higher Education and have been hit hard those are three or four areas i would start with. What do you make of the idea of cheaper courses for the university costing less for students, like humanities costing less than engineering or science. It is all over the papers. I do not think it stands up to scrutiny. For one reason, all of the people calling for different fees for different courses, they nearly all mean Something Different by it. Some want cheaper fees for poorer students, cheaper fees for poorer students, cheaper for humanities, cheaper for medicine and physics, and some want cheaper fees for how well graduates to. We want everyone paying the same, but the amount you pay back after you graduated depends on how well you do afterwards. The government will still pay extra money if you do medicine or teaching to educate you. It will be an issue for this review, but it is not an easy question. Thank you for talking to us. We appreciate your insight. Talking to us from oxford. The education secretary is live on the Andrew Marr Show later on bbc. How is the weather looking . L how is the weather looking . Some claim the radiation caused cancers and birth defects which they passed onto their children and grandchildren. Now they hope a new study of their dna will prove it, as sarah corker reports. The chief scientist told me blood cells will be taken from 100 veterans and their families. We are assembling a group of vetera ns families. We are assembling a group of veterans that we know were present at Nuclear Tests back in the 50s and 60s, and we are comparing samples of their blood with a control sample of veterans who we know were not present at the nuclear test sites. And the scientists will work closely with veteran charities. They are the forgotten generation of people who saw these very, very powerful weapons exploded in their faces, and it is almost like they have been wiped from the history books. The ministry of defence says it is grateful to the servicemen, but says three previous studies of the veterans found no valid evidence to link the test to ill health. They set up the aged veteran fund in 2015 to help find this new research. The flemings want to take part in this study and are waiting to hear if they have been selected. We want recognition. That is what we are fighting for. So, 60 years on, nuclearfamilies are fighting for. So, 60 years on, Nuclear Families are still living in the aftermath of these bomb tests. Sarah corker, bbc news. Speaking earlier on breakfast, nick hillman, director of the Higher Education policy institute, told us charging different course fees would be difficult. There is a logic to the Current System which is everybody pays the same. But the amount you pay back after you have graduated depends on how well you do in the labor market. If your course is really expensive to teach, like engineering or medicine, the government still pays extra money to the university to educate hughes, so differentialfees will definitely be an issue for this review, but it isnt an easy question. What a day it was, Lizzy Yarnold winning the back to back 0lympic titles and making history and i think we should relive that moment, shouldnt we . Second place after the penultimate run, blistering final run catapulted her to the top of the standings, clean through the corners, keeping her speech to the flat sections and producing her very best when it mattered, the focus then for Lizzy Yarnold and all that stood between her and yarnold and all that stood between herand a yarnold and all that stood between her and a second gold medal was ginning flock of austria with a 3 time world cup race winnerjanine flock. She lost time over her final run which meant that the Lizzy Yarnold is the first british woman to successfully defend a winter 0lympic title. And it also meant that laura dees, who was in fourth place after her final run, was bumped up to bronze. Sheer delight from her, since, just like dom parsons a few days ago, she thought she hadnt done enough and had just missed out. So, for the first time ever, Great Britain has two Medal Winners on the same podium at a winter games. And one more record for you it was the first time Great Britain won three medals in one day, because earlier izzy atkin won bronze in the skiing slopestyle. Im delighted to say she is standing next to me with a very heavy metal around her neck. Tell me quite a heavy that is. It is very heavy, if i leave it too long around my neck my neck will get sore. It is 500 g 01 my neck will get sore. It is 500 g or something . It is bonkers. A massive chunk of metal. Tell us, how is the field to win an olympic runs metal, were you expecting it, what we re metal, were you expecting it, what were your expectations going in . No, i certainly wasnt going in expecting a podium that i think this really wa nted expecting a podium that i think this really wanted to put down a run that i was really proud of and ski the best that i could. To come away with this has just been amazing, it feels like a this has just been amazing, it feels likea dream. This has just been amazing, it feels like a dream. Talk us through the final run because the people at home watching you ski, it was so clean, so watching you ski, it was so clean, so calm, when you needed it. watching you ski, it was so clean, so calm, when you needed it. I was nervous at the top because i had just been bumped down to fourth place by maggie, one of the us skiers, and i was extremely nervous but i knew i could do it, i put down the run in training so i decide to put it down when it counted. What was the point when you knew you had w011 was the point when you knew you had won the bronze . It was after those three girls went after me, which was a stressful couple of minutes, because any one of them could have bummed me off the podium. Yeah, i still dont think it has fully settled in but it feels amazing. can help but notice you have a transatlantic accent. Tell us about your connections to Great Britain and where you train and where you have been growing up. So i trained at the moment and practice in utah in the us and my father is from england, he drop in birmingham, and i have loads of family there, they came out to watch me yesterday. My auntand came out to watch me yesterday. My aunt and uncle actually surprised me, they flew all the way from surrey to come here and surprise me which has been amazing to got to see them for bit last night and, yeah i feel so honoured to be a part of tea m feel so honoured to be a part of team gb. What was the reaction when you walked back into Team Gb House . Loads of congratulations. I didnt spend a lot of time in the village yesterday with the medal ceremony and all the media stuff and it has been a surreal couple of hours, 24 hours, i suppose. Your first 0lympics hours, i suppose. Your first olympics and you come away with a bronze medal. Where do you go from here . I will just bronze medal. Where do you go from here . I willjust keep skiing and having fun, the season isnt open yet, we still have a couple of competitions, i will keep it a bit chill, rest up because my body is definitely a bit sore after yesterday, it was a lot of skiing, andi yesterday, it was a lot of skiing, and i will keep having fun. You said you were going to celebrate with a trip to a karaoke bar and sing some katy perry. Have you done that yet . Not yet but probably tonight after all of the guys are done, hopefully tonight. Congratulations, izzy. You mentioned james woods because there was disappointment for him, he was trying to emulate izzy in the skiing slopestyle and just missed out on a bronze medal. The tiniest fraction, agonisingly close. He had been in the bronze medal position for much of the competition but was just edged out on the final run. Just 1. 4 points in it. Before i go, just time to update you on the curling because britains women are in action. They are against sweden in the latest round robin. It is 6 4 after eight 01 round robin. It is 6 4 after eight or nine ends. They have won three, lost through with three more round robin matches left to go, they are in fourth position, only the top four go through, so it is tense stuff for Great Britains curlers on theice stuff for Great Britains curlers on the ice at the moment. Thank you, kat we are keeping a close eye on all of that. The final end, you could see eve muirhead has played a great shot. They are not by any means out if they lose, are they . No, they will still be in but it will be difficult if they do end up losing this. They are trailing by two points in this crucial length. I cant see how many stones are left but. We are in the 10th end. So, yeah, will keep an eye on that. Lets talk fa cup. It isnt all slipping and sliding in sport. There is plenty of that in the football who will talk about the fa cup, Manchester United beating huddersfield by two goals to nil, but it was a controversy, wasnt it . This is of a yellow lines on whether they ask wiggly or not. Have i got my head around specifics of this. The video assistant referee system, manchester 12 zero but it was a gold ruled out for offside but are talking about with a system that is used. So it goes to the video assistant referee. But the lookup the key talking point, this was a goalfrom juan the key talking point, this was a goal from juan mata, tight offside decision, the referee kevin friend was in touch with the video assistant referee who ruled it out, offside, and ultimately, the squiggly line was there as you can see, this is Romelu Lukaku making it safe his second goal of the and that is now 21 goals of the season, we didnt actually see the squiggly line. When we say the squiggly line, it is the line that was observed by the assistant referee looking at the tv screen . There is some debate as to whether it was an accurate line 01 to whether it was an accurate line or not . Exactly. It is supposed to be straight but it looked a little bit like when you got the Primary School and you get given a ruler for the first time . Were not sure if thatis the first time . Were not sure if that is what the video assistant referee was looking out but either way, there was confusion about whether it should have been ruled out. It is a mess, isnt it . It is messy and that splits opinion, joe z mourinho said the system is good but as long as we get it right it is fine. David wagner, the Huddersfield Town manager and i must say, i am with him, he said it takes the emotion out of the game becausejuan mata scores and celebrates but then it isnt a goal and the supporters are well up for as well not sure and i must admit, it is difficult as it is to believe in my youthful looks, iam old is to believe in my youthful looks, i am old school on it as well. Lets say would be on that. The boxing now. George groves successfully defended his wba super middleweight title with a win over chris eubankjunior in manchester the british world title bout went all 12 rounds, with groves boxing clever to withstand the challenge from eubankjunior. The victory was unanimous and also means groves is through to the world boxing super series final. Englands cricketers are in action in new zealand at the moment. Its been mixed so farfrom england, david malan hit half century as england made194 david malan hit half century as england made 194 seven on their 20 overs. Will it be enough with new zealand chasing 100 and 74 . As i mentioned englands need to win by more than 20 runs to stand a realistic chance of getting through to the final. Watch me bumble through we will speak to you later. They brought us ikea and scandi noir, and now a new swedish fitness craze has reached british shores. plogging or picking litter whilejogging has gaining momentum in the uk, as greg dawson reports. In many ways, it looks like any other weekend fitness routine. Youll need a pair of these. A warm up will help it is february. But dont forget to pick up one of these. And maybe this will come in handy too. Plogging, or plucking and jogging, first gained popularity in sweden but its quickly caught on around the world, from the beaches of australia to the pavements of india, and here in the parks of south east london. Ilike running. I like doing stuff in the community. I like finding places that i didnt know existed like, i didnt know this park was here, even though i live in the area, ive never been here before so i think it does two things. It helps me to get fit and helps me to find out more about where i live and that, i enjoy. Ivo gormley is the founder of good gym which runs plogging sessions and other Community Activities across the uk. We have been getting hundreds of new people signing up. Every time you go for a run, youre likely to pass by somewhere where there isnt fly tipping going on. Youre not likely to pass by the house of someone who is isolated and lonely. Every time you are running through your community, there are things that need doing and actually, you can combine that with your exercise. This is about far more than just running, though. As we know, a lot of our litter ends up in the waterways which means that the ploggers end up in waders. And its notjust helping the environment but also potentially the public purse. Clearing litter costs local authorities more than £700 million a year in england alone. This local level volunteering coincides with a growing momentum nationally to cut waste. Following the popularity of the bbcs blue planet series, which highlighted the damage plastic is causing to our oceans, the Scottish Parliament announced plans to ban plastic straws. And the royal family has even backed efforts to reduce single use plastic on britains royal estates. Does it ever frustrate you when youre litter picking, you see the state of some of the parks and some of the waterways . I suppose it is a bit frustrating but especially because this is my local park i live just around the corner but it is good that so many people are willing to give up their saturday mornings to clean up parks and rivers and. To get involved. Get involved in the community. With that sense of making a small difference to a bigger problem, plogging offers much more thanjust a strenuous workout. Greg dawson, bbc news, south east london. It makes you wonder when you see the enthusiasm, like in the curling. It could be exciting to go and pick up litter. We have a nationwide enthusiasm for the brushing. Does it make it go faster or slower . just need to master the rules by the end of the games. It is tied at the moment. We are keeping an eye on it.
