At an Immigration Detention Centre, a former manager says gas were warned about such problems three years ago. Heading for a perfect storm a Senior Police officer warns of the impact of staff cuts and rising crime on forces in england and wales. And in the next hour, the duke and duchess of cambridge are expecting their third child. The queen and both families are said to be delighted with the news. And england are one goal down in their world cup qualifier against slovakia at wembley. Good evening and welcome to bbc news. The American Ambassador to the United Nations has urged the Un Security Council to take the strongest possible measures against north korea in response to its most powerful nuclear test. Nikki haley said at an emergency session that north korea was begging for war, and while the United States didnt want war, its patience wasnt unlimited. Today, south korea has been strengthening its missile defences as they warned the north was preparing to carry out further missile tests. Our correspondent Yogita Limaye reports from the capital of south korea, seoul. A day after north koreas most powerful nuclear test. The south displayed its might. Missiles were launched from the ground and the air. It was a test drill, south korea showing off how it could attack pyongyangs nuclear site. This is a strong reaction from a country that for months now has been desperately trying to avoid conflict in the Korean Peninsular. Across the sea injapan, the government gave worrying details about north koreas latest test. The evidence suggests that the north conducted a Hydrogen Bomb test. The government had to conclude that the test was a success, considering the huge power it generated. Pyongyang has successfully tested a weapon that poses a grave threat to japans security. A Hydrogen Bomb is vastly more powerful than the bomb that destroyed hiroshima. And north korea says that is what its leader is looking at here. The country has conducted six Nuclear Tests so far, but the pace is really accelerating since Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles came to power. And in new york at a emergency Un Security Council meeting, the us lashed out at the north korean leader. Nuclear powers understand their responsibilities, kim jong un shows no such understanding. His abusive use of missiles and his Nuclear Threats showed that he is begging for war. The people here in south korea have dealt with the threat from the north for a long time now, but perhaps never before has a nuclear test and multiple missile tests, in such quick succession, really ratcheting up the pressure on the government here in seoul and its allies. This is americas latest anti missile system, designed to shoot down enemy rockets. It has now been deployed in south korea. The allies might be able to defend themselves against an attack, but no matter how north korea provokes them, striking the countrys nuclear not easy option. This is mostly important, north korea will certainly retaliate south korea will be the main victim of being sandwiched between hardline United States and recalcitrant north korea. And so for now, south korea continues to build up its arsenal while hoping never to use it. The chinese are seen as critical player in the current crisis. The countrys ambassador to the un told the Security Council that war and chaos will never be allowed on the Korean Peninsula. The situation on the peninsulas is deteriorating constantly, as we speak, falling into a vicious circle. The peninsulas issue must be resolved peacefully. China will never allow chaos and war on the peninsulas. The parties concerned must strengthen their sense of urgency, take due responsibilities, play their roles, take practical measures, makejoint play their roles, take practical measures, make joint efforts together to ease the situation, restart the dialogue and talks and prevent further deterioration of the situation on the peninsulas. Joining me now isjonathan fenby, the chairman of the china teams at the research company, ts lombard. How dangerous do you think this current north korean crisis actually is . It certainly getting more dangerous. With each test, as it were. And if it is a Hydrogen Bomb that raises it to another level. I think kim jong un is that raises it to another level. I think kimjong un is pushing the envelope to see how far he can go andi envelope to see how far he can go and i doubt very much that he actually wants to attack drama guam, because he knows it would bring a riposte that would destroy north korea. He is trying to play brinksmanship, and the terrible thing in this is we have no idea he can go full go. Thing in this is we have no idea he can go full go. What is his motivation . People talk of him preserving his position, thinking of maybe Saddam Hussein and colonel gaddafi, who got deposed and he does not want the same thing to happen. There is something in that, and he has made a Weapons Programme central to his regime. We were told the economy is improving, so possession of Nuclear Weapons and missiles has become, for him, a kind of National Standard he has to achieve. We forget about this, but there is a long history going back, to the korean war which is represented in north korea although actually it was the North Koreans who attacked the south but it is represented as the americans attacking north korea so there is a mythology which has built up there is a mythology which has built up under which north korea has to have advanced weapons in order to defend itself as a deterrent and that has become a kind of motif, the overwhelming element in his rule, and at the same time he would use that, if he does become a Nuclear Power, and is recognised as such, to try and exert greater regional influence, particularly over south korea. Do you think he is the most extreme, if you like, leader of north korea, and most unpredictable leader we have seen . Probably the most extreme, but maybe not the most unpredictable. If you follow it, he has been quite methodical, and quite frankly, he has been greatly helped by the fact that the other powers involved, the us, but also japan and south korea, have not known what to do. They have varied and under the Trump Administration we had the president tweeting about fire and fury and then the state department said, no, the road to negotiation is still open and one of the great problems is that kim jong un is able to follow a single pursuit, and eve ryo ne to follow a single pursuit, and everyone is confused, and he does not want to bring down the regime in north korea, which is useful as a buffer state and an irritant to the us and they do not want regime colla pse us and they do not want regime collapse which could produce millions of refugees coming over the border, and above all they do not wa nt border, and above all they do not want the reunification of the Korean Peninsula under an American Allied south korea so there are so many elements going around, but to my view, kim is the one straightforward element in that he will go as far as he can to build up and achieve his aims ofa he can to build up and achieve his aims of a nuclear north korea. He can to build up and achieve his aims of a nuclear north korean you were donald trump sitting in the white house, dealing with this crisis, what you think you would do . Are you saying that that kind of fiery rhetoric we have seen from donald trump is the wrong strategy . Its the wrong strategy in any rational context or circumstance simply because if the United States launches the kind of attack it could north korea, it cannot be sure of taking on the facilities, which are in caves, buried below ground, who knows why . And the danger is, the First American attack, the North Koreans would open up on the capital which is in artillery range of the border, and you forget how close this is, and that could create an escalation with the us bases, as there are more than 20,000 us troops, and then you really could have a problem. Does that mean a military operation of any kind by the americans is unthinkable . Unthinkable unless the man in the white house is ready to sacrifice hundreds of thousands, millions of south koreans. The extraordinary thing is that the reports from south korea is that people there are quite calm, as if they have lived with it for so long that they have got used to it. On the other hand, the diplomatic route, kim does not seem to be interested in that. His aim is to be interested in that. His aim is to get to a stage of being a Nuclear Power and then sitting down at the table, getting that recognised by the americans, the japanese, and now saying, now ive got my toys, i will give be a good boy if you give me a lot of money. Do you think that this will somehow been diffused as a crisis, like the cuban missile crisis . I think the crisis will go on. The danger, in a sense is that kim has made the and it an integral part of his rule. The danger would be is that if the americans thought they would bring down kim and it was an election issue and then you get the whole political element of domestic politics coming into that, however much Everybody Knows that the defence secretary has said that the war would be a disasterfor everyone involved. So interesting to talk to you. Jonathan, a long time observer of the situation on the Korean Peninsula. Thank you so much. And well find out how this story, and many others, are covered in tomorrows front pages at 10 40 this evening in the papers. 0ur guestsjoining me tonight are deborah haynes, defence editor at the times and the politico journalist jack blanchard. Downing street says the Prime Minister is ready to increase the pace of brexit negotiations, suggesting they should be continuous rather than for one week every month. Mps will begin debating draft legislation on withdrawing from the European Union later this week. The so called repeal bill, which is seen as a key plank of the governments brexit policy, transfers eu law into uk legislation. The chancellor, Phillip Hammond warned conservative backbenchers not to amend or delay the governments legislation this week. I would say to backbenchers who are thinking about seeking to amend or delay the withdrawal bill, that now is not the time to disrupt this vitally important piece of enabling legislation. We are making progress in our discussions with the eu, and we are mapping out a course for the future of britain. Im confident that we will be able to achieve the kind of Strategic Partnership that we want with the European Union as an independent country post brexit in 2019. Well for labour, the shadow chancellor, john mcdonnell, said he was concerned about giving the government a blank cheque on brexit in the commons. We respect the referendum and we are going to make sure that the decision made in that referendum is implemented, but we cant allow the government a free hand. Keir starmer said they cant have a blank cheque. We have been waiting for this legislation, but we are finding that. This government says they are going to take control back from brussels, but they are not giving it back to the people, they are giving it to themselves and we cant allow that to happen. 0ur Political Correspondent chris mason has the latest at the start of a busy week on brexit at westminster. There is a real sense that the brexit discussion and conversation and debate and disagreements are really ratcheting up this week. Firstly tomorrow we have david davis, the brexit secretary facing questions in the house of commons on the first day back for mps and peers in the autumn term, and on thursday, the eu withdrawal bill, that central legislation needed to make the process of brexit legal and unlock the legislation that took us into the legislation that took us into the economic community, as it was in 1972, the 1972 act, the unpicking of that, that is what the bill is about. It will dominate parliament for months to come and we will see the opposition parties try and unpicking it and put down amendments and that will make their lives tricky. There wont be any votes, and the main votes will come in a weeks time, on monday and then and then very quickly, parliament season then very quickly, parliament season parliament will finish and there are just season parliament will finish and there arejust a season parliament will finish and there are just a couple of weeks before the Conference Season and we can expect the whole discussion around brexit to dominate the party conferences. As you were touching on, at the start of the start of conversations all things brexit, the British Government are pushing for the quickening the pace of negotiations with brussels. We saw Michel Barnier offering that has an option last week, so we can expect that will happen as we head into some crunch negotiations between the eu and the uk as the autumn unfolds. The us has urged the Un Security Council to take the strong as possible measures against north korea in response to its most powerful nuclear test yet. Downing street says the uk is ready to intensify brexit talks with the European Union rather than sticking to the current schedule of one week per month. And the Security Firm ge for s was born three years ago about problems with the behaviour of some of its staff towards the detainees atan immigration of its staff towards the detainees at an Immigration Detention Centre according to a former senior manager gas. Sport now, and for a full round up from the bbc sport centre, heres 0lly foster. How is the football going . There are goals everywhere, but not where you would expect them. Theres been about half an hour played in tonights world cup qualifying matches. England, scotland and Northern Ireland are all playing. Its first against second in group f at wembley, but that could change because Gareth Southgates england were stunned early on, Marcus Rashford started in place of raheem sterling, he lost possession, a lovely ball picked out Stanislav Lobotka who kept his composure to beat joe hart after three minutes. A win for slovakia would see them go top of the group. One other change saw eric dier come in forjake livermore. England have had few chances so far, alex 0xlade chamberlains effort sums up the first half an hour for them that scoreline isnt what scotland need as they look to make up ground on second place, but they are doing what they have to do at hampden park. Christophe berra has put them ahead against malta. But theyll still hope that england do them a favour. Northern ireland can seal second spot in theirgroup, which should guarantee them a place in the play offs. They need to avoid defeat in belfast tonight against czech republic. And half an hour into the game, they are in front. Jonny evans were the only goal so farfor northern jonny evans were the only goal so far for Northern Ireland, jonny evans were the only goal so farfor Northern Ireland, and theyve only lost once in their last 13 games at home. Goals everywhere, but england trailing. England have gone for experience in their one day and t20 squads to face the west indies later this month with surreys tom curran the only new face in the 50 over squad. One notable absentee is durham fast bowler mark wood, who is still trying to regain fitness after missing much of the summer with a heel injury. Theres a one off t20 match before a five match 50 over series. Top seed rafa nadal is into the quarter finals at the us open at flushing meadows after a straightforward fourth round win over Alexander Dolgopolov of ukraine. Nadal, the world number one lost just seven games on his way to victory as he reached the quarters for the First Time Since 2013. He now faces russian teenager Andrei Rublev in the last eight. The world number one Karolina Pliskova flew into the last eight after thrashing the american jennifer brady. The match seemed at times little more than a training workout for the czech and she took the first set 6 1. The second set was even easier, with the american offering scant resistance and pliskova didnt lose a game. The match was over in 46 minutes. I was saying, it was my first good match, and one of the best this year. I was not the best today, and she can play better than she was playing together than she played today. She was nervous. She did not feel well. But nothing changes my game today, and i was feeling great. A quick update on the world cup qualifiers, scotland and Northern Ireland both winning1 0, but england trailing slovakia 1 0 at wembley. We will be back later with an update on all of those. The Security Firm gas was warned three years ago about problems with the behaviour of some of its staff towards detainees at an Immigration Detention Centre near gatwick airport, according to a former senior manager. Undercover filming for tonights bbc panorama has already led to the suspension of ten staff after allegations of abuse and violence. The company says theres no place for such behaviour in its workforce. 0ur social affair correspondent alison holt reports. Detainee custody officer Callum Tulley wearing a hidden camera captures life inside brook house immigration removal centre, near gatwick airport. Its a volatile mix of hardened former prisoners, alongside asylum seekers, visa over stayers and others. The undercover filming for panorama shows drugs are rife. Self harm is common, and officers struggle to cope, many doing their best with detainees in real mental distress. But others reacting with abuse, bullying and threats. 21 year old callum has worked at the centre for two years. He became so worried by what he was seeing, he decided to whistle blow. When you feel like youve been a cog in that machine, you need to have some level of closure. I mean, i dont think i could have just walked away from it and just left. Dont do it, mate stop and on one day, whilst wearing a hidden camera, he called other offices in to help him restrain a detainee who was trying to harm himself. The situation quickly escalated. And this officer comes in and just chokes him, basically. And he just exerts all his pressure from his hands and arms onto this guys neck. And you see his eyes roll back. You see his eyes roll to the back of his head. I had to try and look as if i wasnt disturbed by what id just seen. It was just immediately, it was messing me up. He sobs. The officer involved has told panorama he cant think of anything hes done which would get him into trouble. Gas says its investigating all the allegations at brook house and will take appropriate action once its seen the evidence. The body of christ. But three years ago, nathan ward says he warned gas bosses about the attitude of some brook house staff. Hes now a priest, but used to be a senior gas manager. So, for example, theres this one poor culture amongst brook house residential staff. And its as though theyre protected and that their behaviour goes unchallenged. These are the notes he read out at his resignation meeting. There is a group that actually concerned me on their relationships with detainees. It was around language that they used. A sense of roughness and a use of force. Gas says it investigates all complaints and has whistle blowing procedures. The home office decides who spends time in Immigration Detention Centres like brook house. People were only meant to be held for a few days before deportation, but some spend months, even years, in such places. Mustapha zitouni was in brook house for nearly a year after finishing a prison sentence. This is him protesting on the Suicide Prevention netting, razor blades in his hands. His flight home has been cancelled because his papers werent correct and hes upset. Now back in algeria, he says the uncertainty over how long detainees will be held made him and others desperate. Its a waiting game, man. In the detention centre, you never know how long youre gonna be. One day, one year, or three or four years. The home office says its increasing the number of former prisoners its removing from the country, and that the dignity and safety of those in its care is of the utmost importance. Alison holt, bbc news. And you can see the full panorama investigation tonight on bbc one at 9pm. A big search is is underway off the coast of North Cornwall this evening after two people were swept off rocks. Lifeboats and a coastguard helicopter are involved in the operation off treyarnon bay. One man has been rescued and taken to hospital but a second is still missing. A Senior Police officer is warning that forces in england and wales are heading towards a perfect storm, because of staff cuts and rising crime. The president of the Police Superintendents association, gavin thomas, says a policing model based on fewer officers doing more is fundamentally flawed. The home office says calls for extra funding are still under discussion. Heres our Home Affairs Correspondent danny shaw. Is the thin blue line becoming too thin . Yes, says the Police Superintendents association. It represents a thousand middle ranking officers the men and women who make the key operational decisions. The superintendents are concerned there are fewer Police Officers doing more and working longer hours in a more challenging environment. The man who leads the organisation believes thats a model of policing which is fundamentally flawed. My members are saying theyre doing their best. They lead highly committed, professional Police Officers. Theyre highly committed, too. But there is only so much we can expect from our Police Service before this starts showing things are starting to stretch beyond their limit now. The Superintendents Association conducted a survey of its members about work pressures. 72 of those who responded said they didnt use all the annual leave they were entitled to. 50 of superintendents said they had signs of anxiety and over a quarter, 27 , were experiencing symptoms of depression linked to the demands of their work. A recent study by the police federation, which represents 120,000 officers, suggested most felt under valued and under paid and wouldnt recommend the job. What we are seeing is the front line resources being dwindled back, which means those on the front line are having to do more work. This has to stop. It is non sustainable. We need mechanisms in place to ensure that this does not continue moving forward. The Home Office Said it is piloting a new National Service to provide welfare support to officers who need it. Ministers have also been having discussions with Police Leaders amid calls for extra funding for forces, but no decisions have yet been taken. Danny shaw, bbc news. Today, prince harry said he was delighted at the prospect of being an uncle again. Fantastic, great. Very, very happy for them. And hows your sister in law doing . Er. I havent seen herfor a while, but i think shes ok. The news that theres to be a third child for the cambridges comes just as william is beginning full time royal duties. Soon, the team of four will become five. Kensington palace hasnt said when the new baby is due, but it must be assumed that it will be around march of next year. Nicholas witchell, bbc news. Heres the weather with louise lear. For many it was a pretty grey september day. But just take for many it was a pretty grey september day. Butjust take a look down the south coast at chesil beach, in dorset, and there is a bit of brightness. Generally speaking there was a blanket of cloud across there was a blanket of cloud across the country in the cloud into the far north west brought some rain at times. That is going to pep up as we go through the night. It will be a weather front that starts to bring some rain across Northern Ireland, eventually to the scottish borders, north west england and wales. To the south it stays pretty humid through the night. There will be a little little hill fog, through north and west, notably fresher. The rain will continue to drift steadily eastwards. A band of cloud, the old spit and spot of rain in the south east. Here it stays quite muggy. Binders, fresher conditions with a scattering of showers. A little bit brighter, particularly for north west scotland and Northern Ireland. 1a or 21 degrees is likely to be the expected high. Hello. This is bbc news. America urges the Un Security Council to take the strongest possible measures against north korea in response to its most powerful nuclear test. The us says the actions of kimjong un can no longer be tolerated. His abusive use of missiles and his Nuclear Threats show that he is begging for war. War is never something the United States wants. We dont want it now. But our countrys patience is not unlimited. But china received backing from russia as it called for a return to dialogue. Translation the peninsular issue must be resolved peacefully. China will never allow chaos and war on the peninsular. Downing street says the uk is ready to intensify brexit talks with the European Union, rather than stick to the current schedule of one week a month. A former senior manager says the Security Firm gas was warned three years ago about problems with the behaviour of some of its staff towards detainees at brook house Immigration Detention Centre. A Senior Police officer has warned staff cuts and rising crime in england and wales means that forces across the country are heading for a perfect storm. Kensington palace have announced that the duke and duchess of cambridge are expecting another child. Prince harry has said its fantastic hes to become an uncle for the third time. More now on those increasing tensions rising from north Koreas Nuclear ambitions. The United Nations Security Council has been meeting today to discuss the options left for the international community. Speaking earlier the Us Ambassador to the un said tougher financial sanctions had to be imposed on north korea. Only the strongest sanctions will enable us to resolve this problem through diplomacy. We have kicked the can down the road long enough. There is no more road left. The United States will look at every country that does business with north korea as a country that is giving aid to their reckless and Dangerous Nuclear intentions. That was the un ambassador to the United Nations. I have been speaking keane earlier i was joined by rodger baker lead analyst on north korean lead analyst on north Korean Affairs at the geopolitical analysis website, stratfor. Com. I asked him about the importance of china in all this. I think the chinese are going to be trying to play a strong role. The reality is, technically, there could be direct contact between the United States and north korea, and the North Koreans will be very happy having bilateral discussions. But it all comes down to what is the purpose of negotiations . From the chinese perspective, they want to engage in negotiations to ease the current level of tensions. From the us, they dont necessarily want to enter negotiations that dont lead towards the complete dissolution of the north Korean Nuclear programme. Therefore, the us sees talks with north korea as capitulation and appeasement right now. Thats the big challenge for a diplomatic solution to the current stand off. How dangerous do you think this crisis is . As we were just saying, we have had crises with the North Koreans many times over many years, but do you think this one is different . I think this one is really the most serious crisis weve had since 93 9a. It is because of the change in the North Koreans capability and capacity. The North Koreans are coming very close to having the ability to strike the continental United States. They feel that alters the way in which the United States would make decisions on actions in the region and, to some extent, they feel they can use that as a way to pressure south korea to start to move away from the United States and, ultimately, to try to get the United States out of their own region. That was roger baker, analysis and north Korean Affairs. Just to say we have had some news in from the reuters news agency, saying that President Trump and the south korean President Trump and the south korean president have agreed, in a phone call, to maximise pressure on north korea using all means at their disposal. That is according to the white house. We will bring you more on that as it comes in. In fact, another line on that phone conversation between donald trump and the south korean president , also pledging to strengthen joint military capabilities. Donald trump apparently, according to the white house, gave principle approval to lift restrictions on south korea missile payload capabilities. So, thatis missile payload capabilities. So, that is what we are hearing from the white house. More on that as it comes in. A poll for the bbc suggests a third of people in london feel less safe in Public Places compared to a year ago. It also found that the majority of us believe further attacks are likely, but many say theyre carrying on as normal. Bbc londons Home Affairs Correspondent nick beake has been looking at the findings. The terror attacks this year in westminster, London Bridge and Finsbury Park were indiscriminate. In all, 1a people were murdered. But what wide impact have the attacks had on us . This poll gives an insight. We asked the question, do you feel more or less safe in public spaces . 33 of londoners said they feel less safe. Everyone will have their own perspective, but here are some views on the streets we found today. Personally, iam not that scared or worried. But at the same time, im just more aware. I commute every morning, so still using the train and public transport and the buses and the tube with no fear or apprehension at all. I am wary, but i think i have always been. I do feel that the atmosphere now, a lot of people are nervy and that makes you more nervous. But i still want to go out and have a good time, personally. So a sense of defiance there. But a bbc london inside out investigation has found the so called Islamic State were trying to recruit attackers to target both westminster and London Bridge more than a year ago. They issued instructions through secret communication, using encrypted apps. The government wants to crack down on terrorists using this technology, even if more of everyone elses messages may be monitored. So where do we stand on the question of privacy versus security . Aa of londoners say more should be done to help Security Forces combat terrorism, even if this means the privacy of ordinary people suffers. Experts say all this is a big headache for the government. Encrypted apps, or anonymous web browsers, or the dark net, these places online that are very difficult to properly monitor, they are proliferating very quickly. They are actually very valuable to everybody and there is no way for the authorities to crack down on these places without also potentially endangering ordinary peoples privacy. The attacks earlier this year caused the biggest loss of life since 7 7 bombings back in in 2005, so what we think about the likelihood of further terrorist attacks on british cities . Our poll found 88 of londoners thought further attacks are likely, although very few people believe one of their relatives will be a victim. Its clear the authorities face a huge task keeping us safe. We may have seen a surge and a blip in attacks this year. Ive got total confidence in the British Intelligence agencies and police in thwarting and disrupting attacks in the future. So quiet confidence from a former Scotland Yard commander. This poll suggests some londoners do feel less safe in light of the recent attacks, and possibly less likely to go to big events. But the majority have not changed our travel routine and, although we are mindful of the threat, we are carrying on as before. The Northern Ireland secretary has said if the current political deadlock at stormont continues, he will have two step in and pass a budget at westminster. He says a deal between the dup and sinn fein remains achievable, but that pressures on Public Services are becoming evident. Earlier today i spoke to all of the main Political Parties here in Northern Ireland. I have continued to urge them to find a way forward to restore an executive. Devolved government in Northern Ireland is in the best interest of everyone. The key policy and budgetary decisions need to be taken by locally elected and locally accountable politicians. All Party Leaders have made clear that they agree that there is a need for an executive to be formed to make key decisions for the benefits of all of the people of Northern Ireland. Now is the time to give effect to this desire. Through Political Leadership on all sides. To better understanding the issues from others perspectives, and to see where the space for resolution exists. This means direct and honest dialogue between the parties to reach resolutions without a running commentary. For this reason, i am keen the parties are given a structured space within which to engage with one another and address their differences in a free and frank way. While the uk government has responsibilities, and will support the parties to reach agreement, fundamentally it is for them to establish where the space for resolution lies and how best to achieve this. James brokenshire ire, the Northern Ireland secretary. If youve never experienced a migraine, the symptoms are a throbbing pain on one side of the head, sickness and sensitivity to light. One in seven people in the uk are thought to suffer from migraines, but a recent survey suggests two thirds of people dont think employers understand the impact they can have. According to figures from the migraine trust, around nine Million People in britain are affected by the condition. Migraine is responsible for 25 million lost days at work and school each year. Thats a cost of £2. 25 billion a year to the economy. Its also estimated to cost the nhs £150 million a year in the uk, mostly due to prescriptions and gp visits. One sufferer has been telling us how her migraines affect her. It will leave me with a pillow over my head, unable to do anything, unable to think, unable to cope with life. I tend to live in a darkened enclave, where sight, smell and light are kept out, because i cant cope with any of those things. The pain can be so intense that i cant imagine a world where there is any pain that is worse than this. I have lived with that. The juniors. Is worse than this. I have lived with that. Thejuniors. I have lived with that for 17 years. Joining me now is dr shazia afridi, who is a consultant neurologist at guys and st thomass hospital. Thank you so much for being with us. Migraines affects so many people, millions across the country . M affects one in seven people in the uk and is the most common neurological disorder in the uk. I think people dont understand the severity. People think of them as just being a headache. As you heard, this patient very clearly describe that it this patient very clearly describe thatitis this patient very clearly describe that it is notjust a headache, people can be bedbound from this condition. Even those that have an episode once a month, the attacker can last for days. Like any condition, there is a spectrum. Some people are mildly affected, in other cases they are very severely affected and can have migraines every day. At that level, you would class it as a disability, in fact. How much do we know about what causes a migraine . We know it is a strong genetic component. Some of the genes have been isolated, but it is not just one the genes have been isolated, but it is notjust one that is responsible. It isa is notjust one that is responsible. It is a multifactorial condition. There are triggers that are well defined, the commonest things like sleep disturbance, missing meals, alcohol. In females, like sleep disturbance, missing meals, alcohol. Infemales, it like sleep disturbance, missing meals, alcohol. In females, it is a hormonal trigger as well. We understand a lot about the disease, but we need to have more investment in terms of research to improve our understanding further and try to produce a more effective treatment thatis produce a more effective treatment that is more tolerable. What sort of treatments are there available . Currently, the most basic treatment is things like painkillers, which might not work. You have to be very careful with painkillers. If you ta ke careful with painkillers. If you take too many, you end up start having a headache from overuse. There are a group of drugs which people can take when they have an attack. They can be quite effective. Gps would be able to prescribe those. For those at the more severe end of the spectrum, those with more frequent attacks, they need to take medication every day. That is in order to try to reduce the frequency and severity of attacks. We heard the patient talking about the impact on her. Describe, for anyone that has never had one, what it does feel like. Is it like an incredibly intense headache . How would you describe it . Writing she described it better than i can. Effectively, it better than i can. Effectively, it is not just it better than i can. Effectively, it is notjust the severe pain. There is a strong pain element to it. Also people can be vomiting. They can be bedbound because any kind of movement will make the pain worse. They become very sensitive to light. They have a different way of processing sensory information through the brain. What might be normal light for you might be uncomfortably bright and painful. Normal sounds might feel painful and cause discomfort. People are actually bad written during the attacks in many cases. In other cases, you might have something called aura, they might have visual sensory disturbances, they might feel numb, and sometimes it can mimica feel numb, and sometimes it can mimic a stroke. So there is a need for awareness, trying to get employers to understand . For awareness, trying to get employers to understand . We were talking about what it costs the economy. People that suffer from migraines need time off work. Our employers understanding in general . I think we have a long way to go before we reach that point. The survey today suggests two thirds of people with migraines feel they are not having support from their employers. A lot of that is about education, raising awareness amongst the public, employers, universities and even the medical profession. There is a long way to go. I think the first step is to improve the education and understanding of people of what migraine can do. Then, you know, further steps can be taken from there. Your message to employers would be what . They have to understand that a migraine can be very disturbing and disabling. People might need time off work or a change in work patterns. People that work shifts, it can often be a strong trigger. They may need to have the same shift every day. They may need adjustments in the workplace. People might find it difficult with bright screens on their computers or bright lighting. They may need more flexible, graded going back to work time schedules. Very interesting to talk to you. Thanks for helping to raise awareness on that problem. The headlines on bbc news america urges the Un Security Council to take the strongest possible measures against north korea in response to its most powerful nuclear test. Downing street says the uk is ready to intensify brexit talks with the European Union, rather than stick to the one week a month schedule. The Security Firm gas was warned three years ago about problems with the behaviour of some of its staff towards detainees at brook house Immigration Detention Centre according to a former senior manager. A teenager who was seriously injured in the Manchester Arena bombing earlier this year says shes been inspired to become a nurse. 1a year old eve senior was at the Ariana Grande concert with her mother and sister when the terror attack happened in may. Our correspondent clare fallon has been following the familys progress. Since the bomb, for many people, life has changed. For this family, their new normality means physio sessions and hospital visits. So i need the trampoline first of all. Doesnt half make you realise, with your balance, doesnt it . What does it feel like when im pressing on it . Well, further up. Walking around now, my legs got used to it. But its the extra things like trying to get your balance, thats when you realise the damage thats been done, i suppose. But it is Getting Better all the time. Back in may, on the night of the bomb, i met 11 year old amelia and her father, andrew. At this point, her sister, eve, and mother, were still inside, seriously injured and waiting to go to hospital. Suddenly, something really hotjust flew over us and landed behind me, my mum and my sister. Then we all, like, dropped to the floor. The next day, this image of eve was on newspaper front pages around the world. Shed suffered 1a shrapnel wounds. Once at hospital, medics operated to remove the lumps of metalfrom her legs. Since then, ive been following the familys progress. A few weeks ago, like other survivors, they returned to the arena. Bizarrely as it sounds, going back there to the arena, under the supervised visit, really, really helped. You know . Being able to ask questions of the Police Officers. Yeah, i think that, psychologically, helps. I think we are really getting there. So what did you find out that you hadnt known before, if you see what i mean . What shocked me the worst was how far forward you went. I knew that i fell forward, but then it was literally, like, almost double, as close as i was to the bomb, it was almost double that. I just went absolutely flying so far. But you didnt realise. Ijust thought i felt forward. For this family, there are many more months of treatment and recovery ahead. Despite that, they regard themselves as the lucky ones and looking ahead to the future. Before manchester, i have no idea what i wanted to be when i grew up at all. But staying in hospital and seeing what the nurses do, and just how good they are. They treat you like you were their kids. So what are you thinking, you want to maybe go into nursing now . Yeah, when im older i want to be a nurse. And thats because of the nurses that you met at the Childrens Hospital . Yes. Changed my outlook on life. Really . 100 it has, yes. Because youve got to make time for your family, youve got to make time for your family. Youve got to make sure youre enjoying it. Because, potentially. Well, some of these could not have been here now. And they are. So im very lucky. Very lucky. This isjust one familys experience. Even when the physical injuries have healed, they say what happened at Manchester Arena will be with them forever. Researchers in edinburgh have developed a camera that can see through the human body. It is hoped it will help doctors to track medical tools during invasive procedures, making them safer and cheaper. What we have here is a camera that is able to see through the body, to locate a medical device inside the body. This is a prototype of the machine that could replace much of the work currently done by x rays or scans. The camera detects tiny traces of light through tissue, helping doctors to see what they are doing. Element to Everybody Knows if you put a torch behind your hand, you put a torch behind your hand, you see red light coming through. You know that light can pass through tissue. However, as it passes through, the light passes around and you just see your whole hand glowing. You dont get useful information from the light passing through. With our technology, we are able to see the very first light that comes through before it bounces around anywhere. That enables us to really see where the medical device is. During invasive procedures, doctors have to rely on expensive scans or x rays to track medical tools. But this camera sheds light on the tiny fibres at the end, making location more accurate. Researchers from Edinburgh University have developed the system so it can be used at the patients bedside and further afield. The camera sits above the patient. It can be hand held. You can use ambient light, normal operating rooms, even outside or the emergency room, or in places where they dont have x rays. Imagine in africa, rural areas. The uniqueness is combining this technology with something that is really scalable and usable. The technology is the result of a collaboration between physicists and doctors. The next step is to use it on real patients during clinical trials. So what would you think if you spotted on of these on the side of the road . If you hadnt realised, theyre bollards shaped like children outside a primary school, and the intention is to make drivers more aware of their speed in the area. But will they work . Nicola ford has the story they may not look like the latest weapon in the campaign against speeding, but in buckinghamshire belly and belinda are exactly that. They are bollards designed to look like children to make drivers aware that they are approaching a school. The council say they need to try something new because drivers ignore conventional sides the signs. We have tried lots of things, slowing the traffic down, lines on the road, lights. But drivers dont notice conventional things, because they are in lots of places. What can we do to make drivers think about the fa ct do to make drivers think about the fact that there are children here and think about their driving . These bollards are the first thing you see when you turn this steep corner. But is there a danger that they could be a distraction rather than a deterrent . And the fact they are so out of the ordinary is baffling to some that live locally. Coming out in the morning to go to the shop, and there they were. I didnt see them being part in oranything and there they were. I didnt see them being part in or anything like that. It was really weird. I think they are weird. Especially the boy one, he looks peculiar. When they appeared, i thought there was scope for some fun. For mark, that works in childrens theatre, they are becoming something of a muse. In childrens theatre, they are becoming something of a muselj in childrens theatre, they are becoming something of a muse. I can understand why people think they look creepy, they have a glazed expression. But it is going to slow down the traffic. If it stops one child from being knocked down, i think that is a great thing. For the real schoolkids, they are dividing opinion. I think they are quite a good idea. It stops speeding and stuff like that, because they look like children that are about to cross the road. They are quite creepy the council say if they are successful, they might install more elsewhere. Love them or loathe them, it looks like they are here to stay. I think it is a great idea lets get the weather. Many going back to school, and perhaps it is the right time, because it is going to become more autumnal in flavour. For some, not too bad with some blue sky and warmth. It was quite humid. We saw temperatures in the West Midlands peaking at 2a celsius, 75 fahrenheit. For most there was quite a lot of cloud around. Further north and west, there was some rain, some of it heavy for a time. That has eased down. It will reinvigorate through the night tonight, pushing up through the night tonight, pushing up through Northern Ireland, across the isle of man and into the scottish borders. Eventually, towards north west england and wales. To the south of that, it is going to seem pretty humid through the night, overnight lows of 15 or 70 degrees. Fresh conditions behind the front. It will take time to clear through. For much of central and eastern areas it will stay predominantly dry for much of the day with brightness. Decent sunshine behind. The front already introducing fresh air through scotland. Top temperatures of 15 or 16 degrees. Similar story in Northern Ireland, maybe a degree warmer with some sunshine. A weak affair across the midlands and wales, bits and pieces of rain. If you get a bit more sunshine into the south east corner, i would not be surprised if we see temperatures at 2122 degrees. As an affront works its way through, taking the blanket of cloud and light, drizzly rain with it overnight, tuesday into wednesday morning, it will introduce something fresher. The isobars squeezing together. More of a breeze, i suspect. Wednesday is not looking too bad a day. Largely dry, some sunny spells. Breezy, top temperatures of 1619 degrees. As we go into thursday, some dry weather across england and wales. The first signs of something a little more u nsettled signs of something a little more unsettled into Northern Ireland and scotland. That low will sweep right across the country on friday. The wind will start to increase. That will bring wet and windy weather pretty much for all of us at some point on friday. A spell of heavy rain to come across england and wales. Blustery showers further north and west, circulating around that low, 30 waiting degrees. A little bit disappointing for the first week of september. That is the theme as we go to the weekend. We keep the wind at times, with blustery showers to go with it. It is also going to feel cool for the first week of september. This is outside source. The world is trying to agree how to respond to north korea using this Hydrogen Bomb. There has been condemnation from all sides, but compare and contrast these two statements. When a rogue regime has a Nuclear Weapons and an icbm pointed at you, you do not take steps to lower your guard. The peninsular issue must be resolved peacefully. China will never allow chaos and war on the peninsular. My amartey is also receiving International Criticism for its treatment of muslims. Just four days ago there was nothing here and now look at it. It is a vast settlement, a temporary home for refugees
