Tom Cash, senior minister at the First Church of Christ
Mother’s Day always tugs at my heart.
My Mom did not marry until she was 28 years old. But she made up for lost time, giving birth to six children within the next 10 years. Five of us lived to grow into adulthood. One, my older brother, died young. The remaining four are largely who we are today due to our Mom’s influence, love and example.
Born in 1923, she was a child of the depression. Because of her father’s death and the beginning of World War II, she joined the workforce right out of high school. You’ve heard of Rosie the Riveter, haven’t you? My Mom was the real deal, soldering wiring for the war effort at a Packard Electric defense plant in Warren, Ohio. She proudly bore life-long scars on her arms from the sparks.
