Tom Cash, senior minister at the First Church of Christ
Mother’s Day always tugs at my heart.
My Mom did not marry until she was 28 years old. But she made up for lost time, giving birth to six children within the next 10 years. Five of us lived to grow into adulthood. One, my older brother, died young. The remaining four are largely who we are today due to our Mom’s influence, love and example.
Born in 1923, she was a child of the depression. Because of her father’s death and the beginning of World War II, she joined the workforce right out of high school. You’ve heard of Rosie the Riveter, haven’t you? My Mom was the real deal, soldering wiring for the war effort at a Packard Electric defense plant in Warren, Ohio. She proudly bore life-long scars on her arms from the sparks.
Steve Carr posted this remembrance of our former editor Sam E. Stone at his website on Tuesday, the day after Sam died at age 84. We are sharing it here with Steve’s permission.
Sam E. Stone shares some thoughts on ministry at Steve Carr’s class at Cincinnati Bible Seminary in 2016.

But he wasn’t actually my mentor.
My wife and I were truly blessed to get to know Sam and Gwen Stone. Through Kelly’s work at Standard Publishing and my job at Cincinnati Christian University, our paths continually crossed with the couple. They had been married for over 50 years, raised an amazing family, and devoted their entire lives to the kingdom of God. They were two of the humblest representatives of Christ I’ve ever met.
Former
Christian Standard editor
Sam E. Stone passed away from cardiac failure on Monday, Jan. 25, 2021, at the age of 84. Over a lifetime of Christian ministry, Sam served as a preacher of the gospel in Ohio and Missouri, academic dean of Cincinnati Christian Seminary, Bible college professor, president of the North American Christian Convention, world missions advocate, author, and advocate for the developmentally disabled.
SAM E. STONE
He served as
Christian Standard editor for 25 years, from 1978 to 2003, the longest tenure in the magazine’s 154-year history.
The New Mexico native graduated from Ozark Bible College, Joplin, Mo., and also earned degrees from Cincinnati Bible Seminary.

My Memories of Colleague, Teacher, and Friend, Sam E. Stone
By Mark A. Taylor
Ralph Small, vice president and publisher at Standard Publishing, called me into his office in 1977 to tell me he was considering Sam Stone to follow Edwin Hayden as editor of
Christian Standard. I still remember his description of Sam, “A steel hand inside a velvet glove.” It’s an apt metaphor for a Christian leader driven by unyielding Christian conviction who led a fellowship of churches by advocating strong principles as he demonstrated unfailing love.
