And here in doha, with all the sport, including usain bolt brought back down to earth after once again proving hes the fastest man in the world. Of the thousands of refugees arriving on european shores, the vast majority are the conflict in syria. European countries are not the only ones affected. The country is at capacity, and up to a million may flee syria. According to the united nations, by mid august of this year, 158,000 people reached greece by sea. That puts arrivals there ahead of italy, where so far 90,000 have come ashore. Leaders of the western balkan nations are meeting in vienna in a bid to find the common strategy to deal with the worst refugee crisis to hit europe. Down the road from the conference, dozens have been found dead in a truck on an austrian highway. Barnaby phillips has more. A grim discovery by a motor way south of vienna. Austrian Police Coming across what they thought was an abandoned lorry, that they thought might be part of an accident. They found blood seeping out of the back of the vehicle, and there was a terrible smell. They discovered badly decomposed bodies inside. They dont know when the poor people suffocated, and it was not possible to count the numbers of bodies. Anywhere between 20 and 50. The Austrian Police call this is a terrible crime, bring a solemnity and urgency to the summit in vienna, dominated by the question of migration. The chancellor said the leaders were shocked by the news. What will they do about it . She was talking about the need for European Solidarity for a quota system between european country, where e. U. Countries agreed to take in refugees according to their size and economic capabilities, and was backed up by the head of foreign affairs, who said we cannot go on like this. The problem is they run into Harsh International questions, and when you look at den mark, u. K. , they were firmly opposed to quotas set by the e. U. Barnaby phillips there. More than 33,000 people have crossed the aegean sea from turkey we go to a greek island, a gate way into europe. Reporter they emerge in the thin light of dawn. We are from syria, refugees. We went, like, 4045 in a rubber boat, inflated. It was going up and down, and during the night children, women, pregnant. That was the poor part, i believe. Reporter for everyone. We have been on the road for perhaps an hour, travelling from the capital, towards the popular landing spot closest to turkey, and you see the past five, six groups together, groups multiplying throughout the day, more than 1,000 newcomers on the island every day. Men, women, children, beaches covered in life jackets and the remains of rubber boats. Waves of people washing up on the shores of greece. You happy to be here in greece . Yes reporter do you feel safe. Yes reporter what do you think youll find on the island . Three or normal. Reporter do you think youll find help . Maybe. We need help. Reporter at a bend in the road, waiting for buses that may or may into the arrive, its as if a Natural Disaster has occurred. After the relief or joy of landing shellshocked faces belonged to people who thought they left disaster behind. They thought theyd find more than this. Reporter well, now, lets speak to the emergency coordinator on board a Doctors Without Borders which is in the mediterranean now. The ship has 700 refugees on board, joining us live on the phone, on the boat. Thank you for joining us. First of all, tell us the latest on the rescue operation that youve been part of, tell us about the 700 refugees on board. What happened . 700 people we rescued in two different operations, the first from a large fishing boat. For drifting at sea. And we did the operation mooring the boat next to our boat, and evacuating the people on board. The vast majority from syria. And then a few hours later we sailed into another boat in discretion, it was a rubber boat with 130 people on board, and we took them safely on board. In the end they were heading to italy in a rally tomorrow. Was everyone on the boats alive when you found them . Yes, luckily the boat operations went well. They were safe on board. And we didnt discover any dead bodies. Obviously other boats have not been so lucky, we know there has been hundreds of deaths in the mediterranean in the past few months. Was there a feeling what sense do you get from the people on the boat. Do they know how dangerous the crossing is, but chose to pursue it anyway. Not necessarily. What starts is the contract in the drama, where they meet hundreds of people who are really afraid and desperate. When they are safely on board, the extreme sense of joy and prayer and singing, thankfully, to be alive. Not everyone knows how far it is or dangerous it is. If they do, they say they are fleeing from war or from being kept captured, and they make a choice. From the people you speak with, do you get a sense of the difficulties people face when they reach the european shores . Some are aware of it, and others not. In any case, if they know it wont be easy, they all say this is my only choice. The lie i had, if it was in syria or libya, or where it was fleeing from, it was not alive. We see the victims of torture of slavery, of rape. I meet hundreds of people on the ship after its rescue. They are individual stories of people trying to save their life. In the past few months or years in europe, there has been little talk of anything other than the refugee crisis. Its been on all the local tv stations, politicians have been talking about it. When you go home and spoke to your friends, do you think people understand the scale of the suffering that these people go through, do you think that despite all the talk on tv, that the average european really understands not just of the scale of the crisis, but the risk and desperation of these people . No, i dont think they do. Also, reading the european new, and talking to people i know, i dont think they understand the desperation and the fear that i see here, i dont see it reflected in the media, and nor in the way the politicians are talking about it. We need to oak at this. Its not numbered. They are people, mothers and fathers and small children. They need our help, and they need to start discussing this problem in a different way. And also to have legal passage into europe so they dont have to risk their life at sea. Since it was a huge shipwreck, there has been more of a concerted effort to rescue the refugees in whatever boat they may be in as they sail from the coast of north africa. You are on the boat of m. S. S. Do you think that now there is enough help in the mediterranean to try to rescue all the people coming across or do you feel at that stage, the stage of saving lives, europe is not working in a coordinated enough manner. The scale of the problem is such that its hard to have rescuecapacity, and, of course, to still continue to save lives, thats an obligation we have with the humanitarian crisis in front of our eyes, to rescue people at sea. Second of all we need to look at them as people, not as numbers or people just seeking happiness in europe, its not the case. I met the people, i talked to them, this is the only chance. In this emergency coordinator, Doctors Without Border vote in the mediterranean country. We appreciate your time and sharing your experiences with us. Thank you. As we have been hearing many refugees will not be welcomed in many places and in certain countries they face barriers. Andrew simmonds is at the border post between hungary, serbia and romania. Reporter this is a 3. 5 meter fence separating hungary and serbia. Its controversial, not the least the cost, many refugees cut through the wire or get over it using various devices and cut through the fence. But theres another problem, and its big. The fence comes to an end just here. Leaving a wide open space. Ut can walk in from serbia without interruption and walk back into serbia. Im there now. Whats the reason . As i walk backwards im coming into romania. Which is an e. U. State. You cant but up a phones or a wall between e. U. States. Therefore you have an an somely with people walking through three different countries. President obama visited the city marking the anniversary, going to sites affected by the storm. Andy gallagher is in new orleans for us. What do we expect the president to do when he is there, andy . I was here five years ago when president obama came to mark that university. He made a speech that was generic. I think well hear a different tone from the president. Hell talk about the issue of race and inequality, and this is an apt place for a conversation like that. Im starting in the lower ninth ward. Devastated. Half the residents came back, and you can find plenty of devastated homes that are empty 10 years after the storm. We take a look at the challenge. On the bustling streets of the historic french quarter. The signs of recovery is obvious. The street is a tourist hot spot. On the banks of the missouri, the sound of gentlemans music hailed the rebirth of new orleans. Its all a far cry from the desperate days that followed katrina. There was calls of a slow response. Thousands died. Many never returned and an entire community was in ruins. One of the oldest blackowned businesses hailed as a symbol of recovery marked with criticism. In woman said Greedy Developers are putting profit ahead of people. All of those people were paid. Some are still without homes and education. Its better, but not what it should be. In the nearby bywater neighbourhood, influx of people trying to find cheaper homes is making it hard for the poor. This community is so expensive, the poor are forced out. Gentrification has occurred, house prices rising 75 . Wealth disparity in the city is growing fast ir than almost anywhere in the United States, proof that new orleans is now more unequal than it was before katrina. In the upper ninth ward, things have changed. Damian grant has deep roots here and cant afford to buy a house, saying he feels the community was destroyed. Abandoned. It could be over for children. Could be a resource center, a learning facility to where they come after school, learning and getting tutoring. They dont have that. They still have a long way to go. The citys powerful officials admit that the poor are not well serve said. Its not a surprise people that are hurting before the storm and after the storm, this is a universal principal in the state of america. When its hot, the poor is hot. When its cold, the poor colder. Hurricane katrina and the authorities reaction to it is a shameful chapter in u. S. History. The inequalities the city is facing, it may be a lasting legacy. Despite all the problems we highlighted progress has been made here in new orleans, tourism is back. Thats the number one history, its back in greater numbers than prekatrina. It is a booming industry. We have met over the last few years. Plenty of Young Professionals moving here to make a new home. Given that theres problems with commodities. The gap in wealth between blacks and white, at a faster rate than any city. Thats what they talk about. Its a different tone, one that is necessary in this neighbourhood where there was ruin and loss of hope. Well hear the president address the issue, and the progress made in the big easy, 10 years after Hurricane Katrina, and there are problems remaining, and the city came a long way since Hurricane Katrina. It will be interesting to hear what president obama has to say. Youll monitor that for us for the moment. In new orleans. Thank you lets go to nepal, where flooding forced hundreds of makeshift camps being set up after the recent earthquake to be evacuated. We have this report. They were made homeless by aprils earthquake, and now a flash flood again made them homeless. Early this morning, around 5am. Earlier we met a gentleman that had to run out of the house Early Morning with a nine month old daughter and he said it was terrifying. I heard people shouting. When i got out of bed the water was this deep. By the time i ran out with my daughter, the water was this deep. We didnt get a chance to say much. Reporter Security Forces that we talked do said they were busy rescuing people, and helping them recover whatever remains from their houses. Most of it was wet, obviously. There were landslides further up, and theyve been clearing that up. In some areas children were on the way to school when the floods waters started to rise. They had to be evacuated. 12 kids were evacuated. There was a hospital down the road where the ground floor flooded and everyone has had to be referred out of the area. More than 800 families had been d displaced people felt that things were getting back to normal, and they have fallen apart again. The fact is when you are dealing with natural strata in the terms of an Historic Building rather than a mine or a tunnel, theres little you can do. You cant line it with steel bars and concrete, youll destroy the monument. Its historic surface. Lose those, and you simply are back into rotted geology. And that process is not far off on the outside. Antony shows us what he means. And if we start losing material like this, right through here, i mean, the only future for that, without some sort of intervention is this so the idea of the bandage is to hold it in place. Until we can get there to repair it. Because every time it rains a little more falls off. If we werent to do this, it would be a catastrophe. Im lucky because i come from this area.
