One person has died after a helicopter crashed onto the roof of a building in new york dozens of firefighters and emergency workers are at the scene in manhattan only a few streets north of times square. And those are the top stories that stay with us coming up next its the stream and well have more news a half an hour of i. Today is the air in delhi a silent killer. And here in the stream or take a look at why in 2018 indias capital had 0 good air quality days this is an important topic for our Indian Community and we want to hear from you share your thoughts tweet us or leave them in our live you tube chop and you too can be in the stream. According to a report released this month by the center for science and environment indias noxious air is responsible for 12. 5 percent of all deaths in the country one of the worst affected indian cities is the capital new delhi where some days breathing the air is equivalent to smoking 44 cigarettes a day. And delis deadly air is the subject of a new people in power documentary airing now on aljazeera have a look. The pollution is palpable. Shares the symptoms of many modern metropolis but its unique features have begotten the crisis. People in power investigates the toxic mix feeding the citys invisible killer and asks why more is not being done to relieve that citizens. And joining us to discuss the problem lisa mailed to him hes a clean air campaigner with the nonprofit greenpeace in boston pile of the pond hes a scientist with the Health Effects institute and they had sorry i missed that shes an investigative producer here at aljazeera and the filmmaker behind the documentary you just saw welcome to the stream everyone in a high want to start with you because you have a personal connection to this topic you were born and raised in delhi so what made you decide to do this film. You know this january we were at a picnic for my 3 year old niece and it was it was a perfect picnic for you know young kids they were all running around in the red this iconic sally wasnt called to the garden and it could have been the most perfect day but i wasnt because the kids were wearing mosques and there was something so disturbing about that site you know and there were it was a very very. And for me its really it really brought home to me how serious the situation is you know you have a bunch of kids celebrating that sort of stay in mosques no child should be put through this you know on her birthday or on any other day but its the sad reality of many children in delhi and thats what thats what really disturbed me and we have a generation growing up with very very dirty air and and you know i will also be living abroad for the last few years and theres a tremendous sense of guilt that i feel for not being in delhi during the worst equity days my family still lives and that he and i really wanted to go deep into this and try and understand why is why the city has such to the air what are the policy roadblocks and what are the Health Impacts on People Living there. So scenario keeping that in mind you tweeted this not too long ago about 2 months ago among confusing numbers on the air quality index categories for air quality and delhi during 2018 here is the simplified to picture of data dont be surprise it tells the same old story air pollution is a year round problem there was no good air day and delhi in 28 team and you can see that chart rate here explain to us what that means. Thanks miguel so this secondly that i had mentioned in the. On twitter that. Similar to lucilles and this has been happening for more than a decade and we know delhi has been the police and got to learn there was a big debate in 2002001 about it was an entirely so this chart says that despite of having monsoons during july august and september during those periods where when that in was seized on pollution or the part of that matter particles from even then delhi didnt have to be and that in your day we are not talking by the standard so were literally maybes and were talking by the indian in india c p c bs own standards he says Center Pollution Control Board and. That i dont need that having those in control at the district level at the state level as well as the center lol and what needs to handle on them and protest for more than toll decades now we still read it which we are not supposed to be reading and we are facing the health consequences. Yeah sure so another thing that i would just want to add to this is you know also if someone like they have who grew up in delhi and still has Family Living there and someone has been researching air pollution for you know like a long time i remember the good old days when all the air pollution data used to be so on pen and paper and you had to go to the central position control board and download it its been its been a long ride and its hard to you know forget those images that take back the smoke coming out of auto rickshaws and buses a while ago and we switched over to see and she asked me to talk about you know 2002000 one when this was a problem so we made baby steps but i think theres still a lot more that we need to do to bring clean air people so i want to share one anecdote from our community because weve got so many of them and so this is they. On twitter he says my 4 year old developed allergic cough so putting a 4 year old on medicine feels like the pollution nightmare which so many parents of young kids are facing we have developed air filters in all rooms and in the car we use masks in the winter as our flights back home to send in small so just one little snippet of someones daily life and what thats like for them but they how you spoke to a long cancer surgeon in delhi hes worked there for more than 30 years but now he says hes seeing something new so i want to audience to have a look at that i use release see along with to speak even when im operating on teenagers were finding big black black deposits and much of this stuck to kumar believes is down to the citys duty in did he the only requirement for you to be affected by the ill effects of air pollution is that you should be breathing now that lasts that you should be breathing the last sentence i mean at me kind of speechless but if you make about. Absolutely monica this was one of the most disturbing interviews that i did because everything was a doctor said. Is is what i what ive been seeing happening around me and one of the scariest things for me personally was meeting a 26 year old lung cancer patient this was a girl this is a girl much younger than me you know could be somebody i have coffee with could be one of my friends and overnight she developed a stage for medicine lung cancer this is something that doctors say is happening to women in delhi now you know lung cancer is traditionally seen in male smokers in their fiftys and sixtys people whove been smoking for decades and decades and suddenly you have women nonsmokers developing lung cancer now you cant say for sure whether lung cancer is happening because of pollution but in a lot of the cases that you know i have that i met and doctors told me about there is no Family History of cancer there is no smoking history and doctors eliminated all of the risk factors that could be leading to lung cancer so for me that was really really disturbing and you know i met this 26 Year Old Girl and i also met the family of a 35 year old woman who died because of complications related to stage 4 lung cancer and and that you know when you see these human stories all these statistics suddenly come to life you know its one thing to read about these things being bad and hear dr stock about it but when you see people thats when you really understand how serious a situation this is and policy i see you trying to get in there but i just want to share with our audience because they have mentioned it the story of priyanka because its really striking shes so young i want to our audience to hear a little bit of her story take a look. Im a 26 year old new delhi resident about 6 months ago i got diagnosed with stage 4 men to static lung cancer. Priyanka arjun is a Digital Marketing consultant an only child she lives with her mother in south delhi the right lung is completely damaged the cancer has spread so much that its just not visible and extreme. Less than a year ago she used to drive for an hour and a half one way to get to her Office Nearly 25 kilometers away. Now many of her journeys are to and from the hospital. Other weird so difficult to look at to see a life affected because of what doctors believe is pollution. No i absolutely i think that you know over the years weve started to really understand how air pollution impact Peoples Health and you know we see cases of lung cancer which are increasing and could be linked to air pollution and at the same time we see a lot of you know people suffering both but in the really short like a day to week we see people developing long term chronic diseases related to air pollution and i think the other part of red which doesnt get much attention is the Health Care Costs so the Economic Impact on peoples pockets than some people have to move outside the city and you know youve behind the Economic Opportunities in winter in delhi i think the meal in may where the greek people you know missed their flight or get home hours and hours after they were supposed to because air pollution is really you know preventing flights from landing or leaving but there are all kinds of impact both on health and you know our day to day life that really air pollution is bringing and it is you know terrifying in some cases i want to share a couple more stories just gotten so many of them this is on twitter who says ive lived there for some time and you can check black things in your nose and on your skin theres also a layer of black pollution sometimes when last time i visited delhi after living for years in the village my eyes were itching because of pollution and we also got a comment live on you tube and i want to share this with you because this is pretty striking so this is precious and push out right its one of the main reasons for us to move from delhi to the us was the impact of pollution on our kids the change was radical after the move but we have been very fortunate so so now having to move cities seems drastic but also when you when you look at those pictures of the 2 lungs you can understand that. Thats truly shocking to know whats going to happen in the polluted. Like many and to people like person to many other people and many of us as well who had the choice of moving from the city move from from delhi but in in those millions of cars then there are People Living on the delayed those are the people who live in the homes the people who are people and they dont do and have a choice of all the resources enough to buy a mosque or be in a protected and waterman demo big used them that that didnt want me so this is the real issue to these 2 pissing delhi and this is just one talk about the thousands of schools on the roadsides and they get directly exposed to the transport layer to pollution and in delhi we held the public transport in fact learning on the compressed natural gas which is a bit being learned there are millions of diesel based god still in delhi and talk about one albeit a plant which has been recently saddam last year which was a little crude but what happens to the other 32 holding bob run through its going to move to about 57 to 58 microgram will be into one tire and let me tell you this could discern who feared microgram its 6 times the World Health Organization standards for the m 2. 5 so thats how scary the ad is already one of the other things that i would also point out especially since you know this is sort of social Media Community is a lot of times we do things as individuals that have an impact on air pollution last summer i was in delhi and you know through a series of events ended up at one of the landfills there in delhi and its a huge mountain now youre not supposed to really be there but i was there and i talking to some of the people who live really close to weigh and you know the reality of whats happening when were using a lot of products in our day to day life and it just ends up and the landfill is shocking so as we think about what the impact of pollution are on i think its also helpful to be mined. Well you know my using this plastic bag and by using this knowing like where is it could end up even the shampoo bottles you know the prospect moke bags that a lot of people in delhi would be familiar with its a really personal issue both in terms of impact and how we interact with the the problem as well so its so interesting that you mentioned what average everyday people can do and what we should all be aware of that were doing so this is cool now this is a tweet in which canal says citizens are nonchalant youll find only a minuscule number of people using masks regarding the government if it took some strong stance we wouldnt be seeing this problem year after year its only getting worse every year the government run so many ads on the radio for instance on topics like urging people to maintain cleanliness protecting themselves from malaria it could surely spare some resources to educate people on how they can protect themselves from the toxic air so thats one tape but meha you did speak to government officials while making this film and i want our viewers to hear one politicians view on 0 good air quality days and what he suggested one of the critical factors in the quality is the meat your logic in fact the continuous live of what you know were duty or this does is the. Prevent the disposal of it here because of the moisture of live in the disposal is very bad and that is why you rarely get to see a good day thats said to have an absolute number of 0 good qualities and. Despite so much Government Intervention doesnt that surprise you well that just means that we need to do more work there is one point to me it cannot and should not be the governments responsibility alone peoples participation is a huge thing unless that happens and individuals start caring for the environment we will not be able to really clean up may how bloody do you think when you were and you were talking to him and say oh i hear you want to jump in there so lets get a head here and then you can then you can come in. I am so 1st of i was very surprised that both the federal government and the Delhi Government gave me great access and they were very candid about admitting their lapses that happened on there and you know there is definitely an acknowledgement that air pollution is a very serious issue in delhi and and i think both the delhi has a complex governance structure theres a federal government as a Delhi Government it is also Municipal Bodies that controls lots of delhi and i spoke to was a federal in Delhi Government and there is this knowledge and that look you know we should be doing more and we are not able to do more because as you know a certain number of reasons. So thats one thing and you know so so i got a lot of you know they were very open and honest about where you know where they thought they had been doing enough as far as as you know good quality diesel is concerned i do agree with him and i should correct you hes not hes not a politician he is the top bureaucrat that heads the environment minister that 7 so he it is one of the problems that delhi has its a very very complex city air quality you have an unfortunate geography and you have atmospheric conditions that do a shop pollutants so he is correct in saying that its difficult to see a good quality day but having said that there are lots and lots of sources of pollution that can be tackled from within the city theres also a lot of regional pollution that comes into being that should be you know that should be tackled as well and that should be a government priority they have put in you know a lot of plans in place the courts have been very active in a lot of what you see in Government Policies coming out of court orders and directives but what we all find i think we all agree on this is that implementation is such a challenge and its not just being an absolute its across the board so you dont have the manpower to really enforce a lot of things you dont have in some cases the political will to enforce some of these things so its a huge challenge and also you know sit. Have to be mobilized a lot more than they are right now you know you had you had the court stepped in and restrict the use of firecrackers but the thats a very very polluting period for delhi and of course about 3 days you have a lot of pollution but people will still lighting firecrackers amongst them there needs to be a lost or citizen involvement so now as youre talking there i could see both publicly and sunil look like they had so much to say so i promised wed go to you but i want to 1st show this comment we got live on you tube from shusha who on the on the topic of personal responsibility in people doing things about this says delhi City Residents are still driving old age vehicles using generators too much use of generators somehow people are also responsible for this mess and theres no proper disposal disposal of waste just a list of the things that people are doing wrong in his view but you know what if you want to and. So i completely agree with what. Said in the comment as well as what nat said but there is some other leads in off why delhi still polluted the job of situation of delhi is not very distinct from many others who is across the world which had the history of being the polluted city but the hope leaned up so to say that city will be polluted because of the joel 3 is not at that liquor act because the policy normally happens when we meet something today and that in this in is the issue and that to target those emissions their home in certain policy is now mentioned in passing be. Nor did there was a lot of discussion about that already one cant scream in 2216. 00 and that was the scheme which done it to millions of people to change their mindset yes its really necessary to do that its necessary to leave the boat days cars and diesel based cars and go to the public transport them on what todays news is walking and cycling but at the same time if behind these measures which are targeted towards changing millions of peoples mindset be what even cards orders double boarding which needs to be done near stupid and in a comprehensive systematic manner and it cannot be done in 23 months but the big polluters which have been hiding behind these people these poor people shouldnt be allowed to id any more there are 2 more problems which are emitting millions of tonnes all of this. Poisonous gases sell for sell for. Oxide and metal and oxide into did out there that are millions of then we can see the well in the city the way that they are polluting the not just in delhi but of course the country they had the need to be targeted and they need to try to deal with the same efforts and same level of excellence which are committed towards individuals and board has to will say hand in hand it cannot be that millions of people change for the new set. 10 years and then after 10 years. Theres been a big. Target and. So are you ill say that yes we will have to do a lot but this big. It will and this will be forced to act urgently and im glad that you gave us the prescriptions for solutions and what you think needs to be changed because we got this tweet from someone who says we know the problem we need to highlight ask us the solutions at the policy level and Community Level and individual level so i want to share with our audience and i guess one group of people that are doing just that they are behind this website this is r. N. A. Innovations a World Without air pollution you can see their mission here on my screen and one of them sent us a video comment on what they are doing to help this problem have a listen hypothecated learn from engines not have. It goes over 6000000. 00 thats not good news hotlines only distributions we did decades to come to the meeting monday while emissions from coal 1000000000 and rising cost of goods that is digitally the situation kind of proves the problem has serious limitations mission is to reduce far from engine exhaust from. Successfully separates and tops almost the diehard engine exhaust well certainly the challenges of. So they are in scrapping the particulate matter someone else on twitter says what needs to be done we need to ban gasoline cars and electric vehicles should be the only option for delhi so several solutions their policy whats your take on that you know so i think i want to think of step back and sort of talk about some things that we need also mentioned which is but any action that we take on air pollution well need to focus across all sources so we can you know i one level think about sources like power plants vehicles and also use of solid fuel is a lot of people across india are still using solid fuel to heat to cook and you know just for their general livelihood and its an issue of Energy Access but thats another big source of the National Level i think the other side of the story is that you know the bureaucrats from the ministry also mentioned that theyre taking different policies or you know deploying different measures and the issue with that it would all have to be done in a very holistic manner so you focus on something at the city level and this will be a different set of sources then you focus on something at the regional and the National Level and this will be a different set of forces and i think in all other things we need to keep in mind that at the heart of it is going to be the Institutional Capacity of the pollution control board the other doc offices that are in the position to really make these changes happen unless we do that unless we provide them with the right technical capacity with the Financial Capacity even were not really going to see the change and then i think the final thing i want to bring to people but then shouldnt here is that even in cities around the world that have been change its not happened overnight so we need to say positive and keep wanting thought air to get cleaner but i think its not going to change tomorrow and its not going to be cleaner next year it will take time its taken decades for many us cities to get cleaner but the important thing there was good with. And continuous action across all levels of government and you know what of course the levels i mean its a long battle but we need to keep fighting and a long battle that we will continue to check up on on the stream here on fortunately we are all out of time for now but a big thank you char gas to sin nail. And of course to our community for being part of this with us of course you can check out the entire people and power documentary deadly air now streaming on aljazeera dot com until next time the online. Right there is the latest headlines here on aljazeera im back with more for you in about 25 minutes time up next the big picture charts the rise of intelligence to stay with us. Do you. Pull. Over the next kind of length of a pint or so i will talk to you i guess about ai and whether. This is also bullying this is a dollar. They are subsistence farmers and they live in a village in yemen al bayda province. In september of 2012 an american drone hit a shuttle of shoppers going to market killing 12 civilians and absolutely 0 militants. Youre. Mrs finest of the knowledge ob are during the celebrations for the wedding of his eldest son is brother in law salim gave a sermon. His sermon denounced al qaida denounce militancy he said it was spreading a cancer of violence across Yemeni Society and he said that everything that al qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula was doing was totally contrary to islam. Couple of days later a couple of young men unknown to the villagers come and ask selim goes down with a local policeman speaks of the man an american drone kills all. Youre. When best to get tons of strikes like this very well documented case. Attacks on innocence and we started to ask ourselves how did it happen why did these kinds of mistakes keep getting met. My name is corey kreiter im a human rights lawyer. Was my client. In 2013 i set out to understand how members of faisals family could be killed by mistake by the United States. But what i found goes far beyond drone strikes in yemen targeting by Data Analysis by whats called Machine Learning is just one small part of how computers order the world. From the way we work to health care to how were police and part official intelligence is raising urgent questions about the balance of power and our power to challenge it. This is the world according to ai. Theres a lot of debate and a lot of hype about ai these days but were not talking about just selfaware computers are a way its not just being used as a kind of when it chess or when it go or translate a document as that its being used to kind of predict things about all of us. The way we talk about now is the way people talked about patent medicines at the end of the 19th century there were things that were actually medicines but at the same time people were pressing the oil out of snakes mixing it with opium and buffalo dung and selling it as medicine. Communities particularly vulnerable communities children people of color women are often characterized by these systems and quite misrepresented of ways. Marginalized communities are experimented upon and theyre on the front lines sees technological systems the frontlines of harm they are also on the front lines of rebellion and refusal. In 1041 the world was a war. Youre. Germany and the axis powers looked to have the upper hand against allied forces. One of the advantages they gave the nazis a crucial edge was secret communications. The germans used in encryption device called the enigma machine to encode their messages. Cracking enigma was difficult and time consuming but if encrypted messages could be decoded quickly it could lead to a decisive shift in the war. The allies desperately needed a faster decryption machine. Spearheading the drive to build one was british mathematician alan turing. The origins of of ai as we know it today was during the 2nd world war was churning work on the and make my machine. The 1st one really to think about it the idea of the computer as a full machine a machine that could think like a human. Cheering built a device using new Electro Mechanical Technology that increase the rate at which intercepted messages could be decoded. It was a huge breakthrough accelerating the allied victory bringing forward the end of the 2nd world war. And marking the beginning of Machine Intelligence. Artificial intelligence really was growing in britain under the name Machine Intelligence and in the us there were starting to be a small number of people who were really getting involved in this seeing this as an important thing for the future. In 1956 in the summer at dartmouth a workshop was held was run by people like Marvin Minsky John Mccarthy and that event really was sort of the american birth of Artificial Intelligence and in fact the term Artificial Intelligence was used in their proposal so thats really where the shift from calling it Machine Intelligence to Artificial Intelligence happened 1. Marvin minsky was an american mathematician and cognitive scientist his friend John Mccarthy was a professor of mathematics at Dartmouth College in the us. It was at dartmouth in 956. 00 that mccarthy organized a summer Long Research project focusing on Machine Intelligence. It would become part of ai folklore and the place where the term Artificial Intelligence was 1st coined it would also bring it to the attention of the u. S. Military. In those days the military was the principal source of funding for Computer Science research and if you went into the founders you said you know were going to make these machines smarter than people some day and whoever isnt on that ride is going to get left behind and big time so we have to stay ahead of this and boy you got funding like crazy as the Defense Department took over more of the funding the question started to being asked you know but what can we do with it now. The u. S. Department of defense had its own research arm called the advanced Research Projects agency arpa the push for developing a i was driven by the logic of the cold war any technological advantage america could get over the soviet union was pursued through our. The new field of Artificial Intelligence was flush with money and confidence about what it could achieve. But there were competing ideas about how i would lead the way to this brave new world. From the very 1st day there were 2 big approaches one of them was were going to figure out the rules and were going to teach the rules to the machine right were going to say this is how you do this 1st or this 1st or that 1st of that so the 1st one is the socalled expert systems where you just caught a file old rules you can and say go for it the 2nd one was were going to show it things were going to feed it data and its going to learn from the data you feed it the data and expected to build what people call a Neural Network which is that it looks at the data and the results and says ha ha this this this goes together and then does it again and does it again and till it builds almost like a brain like structure. What happened was a book was published actually Marvin Minsky one of his colleagues that basically showed that these Neural Networks could not really learn certain things. Which typically happened in ai is. Something comes along that makes us start to doubt a piece of technology and that closes to sort of go underground for a while while the other stuff gets more attention. Development of Neural Networks slipped into the shadows of ai research as expert systems took center stage and all the money. But by the airlie 1970 s. The great advances promise by Artificial Intelligence had failed to materialize. A clumsy robot aptly named shaky and rudimentary processing machines fell way short of what the early ai visionaries had sold to their backers. For the us military ai had lost both its appeal and its purpose. It cost what you call the ai winter which stopped for quite a while. The socalled ai winter would freeze state sponsored development of Artificial Intelligence for over 2 decades. Chasse the number of bored possibilities is just astronomical. Theres so many possibilities in chess that by the 20th move a chess board there are more possible ways the board could look at than they were molecules of the universe. Chess a measure of human intelligence for centuries had become a benchmark for how far Computer Technology had progressed and a proxy for how Smart Computers could be. With state money frozen private companies such as i. B. M. Funded their own development of ai. And we do have this bar. In 1975 b m engineers built a computer that took on World Champion Garry Kasparov in a series of chess matches. They called this computer deep blue. This is amazing engineering i thought it was so good they had 64000 processors going at really high speed through chess millions of the seconds. Between the 1st game of the 2nd game the computer was trained on lots and lots of casper of games so it wasnt just becoming a good chess player but its becoming tuned to playing against that particular person i was there actually at the time here in this building where the game was actually the machine was and where the machine was was invented and i was looking on the systems aspects of it it was search algorithms but search algorithms that were intelligent from the point of view of thinking about one another. Over a series of 3 test matches deep blue beat Gary Kasparov at outmaneuvered out thought and out played the greatest chess grandmaster of his day. Artificial intelligence had burst out of its winter and now looks set to blaze a revolutionary trail. Very. High. That was a really key moment was in that when when i. B. M. s deep blue Garry Kasparov to me that it still gives me goosebumps that its back to war 3 broke through at that point in time it was the pinnacle of intelligence for anybody to be able to play chess at the level that the grand master will play and beating the grand master itself is is i think its importance cannot be overstated. But the capabilities that vent into it brought together algorithms. Infrastructure which is hard and data sort of 3 of these aspects came together at that point and i would say it was the precursor to our latest revolve for ya i. I b m had built deep blue using the established expert systems model of ai the chess victory over kasparov was its greatest achievement to date. But to beat a person at a game involving set patterns and strategy was one thing beating humans at a game of general knowledge was another. The next big mark in the public imagination was i. B. M. Schwartz that was a machine that could play jeopardy. Jeopardy is a game in the United States we give the answer to a question and then people have to try and work out what the question is. And became clear you couldnt win a game like jeopardy by just building an expert thing in each category theres just too much so they started moving to a different direction and they brought together bunch of people eventually from all parts of the company. By 2011 i. B. M. Engineers were. Working with new tools one key challenge was understanding human language using advancements in the new field of natural language processing they build layer upon layer of algorithms mathematical structures that allow the machine to learn human language through a mass input of data language and communication is the essence of us as being human beings. Its one of the hardest tasks and hardest barriers for it to have crossed after we did that on this u. S. President negotiated the treaty of portsmouth ending the russojapanese war watson who is Theodore Roosevelt good for 800 dollars what i. B. M. Did was they played the best players in the world they made the t. V. Came of the players who dont the best the 2 very top players and beat the. Life on t. V. I. B. M. s watson computer like deep blue had triumphed in the battle between human and machine but unlike deep blue watson was not strictly an expert system its novelty was Machine Learning a branch of Artificial Intelligence that had been driven underground decades earlier. The Machine Learning side it almost died out but from ninetys on when you started having the internet and all these digital devices in the mountains and mountains of data and you started feeding this huge amount of data to these Machine Learning systems they were uncannily effective. Far from being abandoned Machine Learning had continued developing away from the mainstream of Artificial Intelligence. Alongside Technological Advancements personal Computers Laptops mobile phones high speed microchips. And then came the World Wide Web Search Engines tech giants social media smartphones Machine Learning now had the 2 ingredients it always needed massive computer Processing Power and data masses and masses data. Machine learning was now set to take off. The United States government has been seeking to use Machine Learning to isolate targets for drone attacks for many years because im afraid we americans have a bit of a tin ear for irony it calls its program skynet. In which it is going to seek to try and find targets for attack when we talk about ai and warfare the other thing i want to be clear about is this isnt about the terminator right this isnt about killer robots what i want to talk to about is humans and targeting and the way that human intelligence analysts relate to information that comes out of semiautomated processes basically from peoples cell phone metadata and we try to determine their socalled pattern of life where theyre going to they know. Who they talk to heres the problem i think that the United States has the n. S. A. Learned to collect it all well before they were able to understand it all faster was faster absolutely Machine Learning an Artificial Intelligence would permit the Defense Department to accelerate the process of target selection faster and always better. I want to make sure that people understand actually drones have not caused a huge number of civilian casualties for years the drone wars were an open secret in washington but it wasnt until 2012 that president obama officially acknowledged the program for the most part they have been very precise precision strikes against al qaeda but that was the same year we started to hear about signature strikes where the cia or the Defense Department would target not a name or an identity but essentially a phone this is a targeted focused effort at people who are on a list of active terrorists. They would collect signals data especially telephone data and put it through a secret algorithm they would decide you were a threat based on who you talk to where you went to your friends were but thats not precise at best its an educated guess so i started to wonder what if finals brother in law and his nephew were killed because of an algorithm. Mornings and snowden time 29 years old i worked for Booz Allen Hamilton as an infrastructure analyst for n. S. A. In 2013 Edward Snowden blew the whistle on the u. S. National security agencys Mass Surveillance Program he revealed that foreign intelligence gathering tactics were now being deployed at home casting a nation wide net to catch a few bad fish. So while they may be intending to target someone associated with a Foreign Government or someone that they suspect of terrorism theyre collecting your communications to do so. A year later Michael Hayden the former director of the cia and n. S. A. Stopped short of disclosing the skynet programs existence but admitted the targets were being identified for socalled signature strikes using metadata collected from Everyday Communications we kill people based on. A signature strike would be selecting someone who looks like other people that you think are the people youre looking for you know one critique of this is demography is destiny in some sense. So we dont we cant know because of the nature of the beast right exactly whats going on whether skynet was ever used but it seems likely to me that given what weve said about signature strikes that some kind of algorithmic targeting process is being used to isolate targets in places like yemen and pakistan using partly signals intelligence to be clear we have no evidence that that model was ever used in practice i would be shocked if it isnt being used Machine Learning is pretty good at finding elements from a huge pool of non elements when president obama took over the socalled war on terror he favored drones because they meant fewer boots on the ground and as the drone wars expanded the method of selecting targets changed. Metadata was not a key source of intelligence but there was far too much of it for human analysts to process the Machine Learning would be used to identify targets and sift the good guys from the bad at least that was the idea Machine Learning is good at this problem called binary classification so is someone part of a terrorist network are they not part of a terrorist network Machine Learning is also pretty good it asymmetric problems where there are very very few things youre looking for in a sea of things youre not looking for a few people who are part of terrorist networks in a sea of civilians for example so where do you think that kind of statistical targeting is likely to go wrong humans to binary classification all the time ok we have to decide if were looking at you know a bunch of for example a bunch of dogs at the dog park and which ones are dangerous and which ones arent when we say no that dog is not dangerous but it is thats called a false negative if we made a mistake we can go the other way we can have a false positive oh my gosh that dogs really dangerous but its not so people might take action on those false positives and will get innocent People Killed im also worried about false negatives the thing about Machine Learning is that it assumes that the future is like the past it assumes that the things its looking for in its prediction are like the things that it saw in the Training Ground so if we have a problem where people are actively trying to disguise their activities. Then a Machine Learning model is likely to make a lot of false negative mistakes its going to miss a lot of people who are likely terrorists that said im not sure that theres any other way to do it but the risks are very substantial and almost certainly mistakes that lead to peoples deaths are going to happen here. We always knew the strike on faisal family was a mistake. We meant congressman we talked to senators we havent spoke to people in the White House National Security Council but while everyone expressed regret for pfizers loss no one could explain why it happened or how it happened. Were making millions per month offshore accounts something taxes i was losing. More than 10 years after the Global Financial crisis millions of dollars a year its like the greatest job that you could ever imagine getting without putting any of your own capital or best who was in the eye of the storm and drove millions of workers into unemployment i said. We need immediately i mean to be the man who stole the world coming soon. To stand the differences. And the similarities of cultures across the world. Aljazeera. Very. Bored. Your beliefs are not going to. Go on could well sort. Of been going to. Come over to our side sometimes im. Going right where you are going to and then when we cross weve got a bit of reportedly that theyre going to. The u. N. Has confirmed iran is increasing its production of enriched uranium but it says its not clear whether terror on has now violated the terms of the 2015 yukiya agreement it comes as germanys foreign minister this is terror on looking for ways to preserve the nuclear deal that irans foreign minister says the u. S. Must end its socalled economic war against terror on the u. S. Has said its gravely concerned as hong kongs chief executive vals to press ahead the controversial new extradition will hold a 1000000 people took to the streets on sunday this is hes largest demonstration in more than a decade that discretion would allow people to be extradited from hong kong to Mainland China. August and former president Asif Ali Zardari has been detained on corruption charges hes accused of using false Bank Accounts to launder multimillion dollars worth of kickbacks from government contracts that ari denies the allegations and his Pakistan Peoples Party says the case is politically motivated. And one person has died after a helicopter crashed into the roof of a building in new york dozens of firefighters and emergency workers there at the scene in manhattan just a few streets north of times square its believed the helicopter was attempting an Emergency Landing on the buildings roof the person killed is believed to have been the pilot. All right those were his headlines here on aljazeera or join us again in 25 minutes but up next the big picture continues to stay with us. The but. The only. The so are. My client jobbers brother in law and nephew were 2 victims among hundreds caught up in the american drone war in yemen. While gehman has protested the loss of civilian lives few knew that these were victims of computerized targeting built on data gleaned from phones and surveillance apparatus set into algorithms and narrowed down from possible terrorists to probable terrorists to definite terrorist. Neither finals brother in law or nephew was a terrorist. As a human rights lawyer i had been investigating civilian casualties and drone attacks in yemen and pakistan and over time we came to understand that the people we work with who lost loved ones were killed as a result of a semiautomated algorithmic targeting process and there was a kind of article that came out about an n. S. A. Slide deck that said well this this is how were going to use Machine Learning to find an isolate targets in pakistan and somebody found you up as a statistician and asked for your take on this and you were like well look this is just this is just totally unsound yeah it was pretty and so i mean is it just basically kind of racial profiling at scale how do you see it. Well its more complicated than that than that because the kind of information that were working with in that case is to less than a minute the problem in that particular example that the n. S. A. Analyst were trying to figure out was ok we identified the cia had identified a small number of people who were couriers for terrorist organizations were carrying around flash drives and messages among groups of terrorist organizations i work with and the question is can you use the phones calls that these people make and the places that their phones check in with the souls assuming weve got those people right but anyway please you know i think i think that the court im willing to believe that they got these people right the question is how many more are there that they didnt get yet but can we use these peoples information to disambiguate them to tell the difference between these people and all the other people in a city they live in can you tell how different they are so that you can just use that to leslie meditator to predict which of the people who we know are actually are terrorist couriers and how few other people can you include in that list if you false positives can you get in that classification and i was very skeptical about the particular model that was used in that case do you see some resonances here and you know were talking about communities abroad who have basically designated a threat and then targeting them for armed attack does that chime at all with some of the policing and other targeting of communities of color in the states that you thought it. You know i i i resist the temptation to kind of essential live is these as the same in every part of the world in every context we do know though that. Technologies that predate these kinds of Automated Technologies about classifying and figuring out who might be a threat. Disproportionately or targeting people who might have politics that are say more to the left people who are more interested in civil rights people who are advocates of human rights labor organizers for example so i think the question is again always underneath these projects where the values and the politics of who whos being assessed whos being classified for what purposes and those are fundamental questions that are going to be with even with the next version of the Technology Top l. A. P. D. Spying coalition did research on drones being deployed in l. A. In 2015 they produced a report and they actually drew very explicit lines between the use of Drone Technology in the middle east and the proliferation of Drone Technology in Police Forces across the United States through the urban Area Security initiative and they have been making these connections right the military is ation of the police. The increase in 3rd party private services that are bought by Public Institutions so what how do you see it you know the Defense Community affecting the development of these technologies is that the kind of original sin of the thing i think that particularly in academic contexts. The big chunks of funding have been for decades and continue to be from from defense i dont think that most of the funding that comes out of the fence establishment thats for pure research. Looks like its going to be used to kill people the larger problem is that it creates a kind of philosophical or even ideological framework that its ok to produce things for the defense establishment and that it makes sense to produce things for Law Enforcement because theyre here to help us that failure of having a critical understanding of what military and Police Institutions do to the communities that are on the receiving end of their business i think thats the larger problem the residence i kind of see it and the reason i guess i asked the question is somebody who did work with those communities in yemen in pakistan is that they talk about feeling scrutinized and over police in a way that i hear when i hear you guys talk about these other communities you know the sharp end of the policing so its almost as if the language that comes out of them that says we feel our whole community are suspect its never point it is that White Collar Crime the containment the prediction the assessment always seems to be at a community who we fear in some way in that we want to contain well and who the we is in that is very important because we also dont profile and track for example White Supremacists nazis neo nazis in the same way we dont talk about them as domestic terrorists for example in the u. S. Or in other countries so the framing of who is the threat is ultimately always the value question i think thats on the table that we have to be thinking about and of course the more you ought to me the profile of who the threat is who the threatening other is the more you flatten these conversations about values the harder it is to actually talk about what people are struggling for what struggles for justice around the world look like i mean and then some of the very companies who develop these technologies expand into other areas dont you see youve got talent here the security and Intelligence Firm who developed tools for counterinsurgency in iraq then sold some of their kit to the l. A. P. D. Recently inking a deal with the u. N. World food program seeking to help them spot fraud i mean. Where then it makes you think mass knows no context we can sell our product anywhere as long as were finding us to testicle relationship. People can take 500 pictures to get that perfect shy. Which is something when i was 20 could not have done because of what it on film and it was and you got what you got. One of his. Vast swathes of the world with cameras on smartphones billions hooked up to social media sharing images online gave Machine Learning engineers access to a massive data billions of images these images could now be used to train algorithms to teach themselves to detect particular features recognize particular forms this new breakthrough was called deep learning very soon ai would use deep learning to teach itself to recognize the form of a cat just by looking at millions of cat images on the internet. From there that made the leap to recognizing people. Artificial intelligence now claimed the ability to pick out a specific face in a busy crowd to find the needle in the haystack. So what you have in france fear is a very typical surveillance saints as a camera looking at a public street and people clearly want us to come on face recognition go to work out that its seen a person and then its got to work out with the persons faces and its got to take a biometric caution about face in essence something that it can pat can compare against watch list if there is a match that. Youll see thoughts come up on the screen stop person is now going to the system has been identified clearly you can set your system up to alert the right people when that happens right so if you wanted to kind of test it out on my face for example how would we make that happen so very simply we would have a surveillance photograph or it could be something taken from social media or just from the internet that would be loaded into the watch list as you can see her such that if you walk past a camera that is linked to that watch list then you should be attacked if you have been seen and then send it to the appropriate place so we give it a try are. You great crowded street saying lots of people coming towards the camera. Each time the camera attacks that same person but they will actually hush that person and say if theyre on the watch list so you can say here for example guys cliff faces on the person against the watch less than on their back consequent it up as a horse as if the camera doesnt say no its ok. The facial recognition engine is working hard right now checking all of these people around clearly. You know coming out or screen and you know just a cultural view of your face an initially just new york it will continue to identify the level of confidence will change depending on your angle to come up but the minister in one single for a player on the list. These facial Recognition Technology is should not exist for what purpose are they being brought into existence again who are they being pointed at and what kinds of protections should we have against the common critique of it is while it doesnt seem black faces very well but is that is that the whole problem with facial recognition i think for the people away joy. Their position would be these technologies exist and black people will be ensnared in the especially black women the failure rate is greatest on black women are going to be misread by these technologies and therefore potentially harmed because they will not be able to kind of fight back against these technologies that are pointed out that. Joy of the Massachusetts Institute of technology showed how facial recognition programs were unable to recognize black faces particularly the faces of black women. The problem was data and bias engineers who were mostly white males trained algorithms with the data set of images that were themselves overwhelmingly of white males the resulting algorithm struggled to recognize non white non male faces. The algorithm simply couldnt compute what they saw with what theyd been trained on the same racial and gender bias that existed in the wider world was trained into the system itself. One of the other key parts of the debate has to do with the extent to which the Technology Works on different faces so whether its as effective on people of color or women is that changing does a kind of depend on the technology. Is only them how its trying so its also knowledge for example we have have trained it on different emma conflicts in different parts of the world but certainly in terms of if you step right kind of strip thought about debates away the on the underlying all its official intelligence is kind of an illiterate company trying to do any which way they can clearly be trying to you know and have it in her bosses within. One of the sharpest growth areas of Artificial Intelligence that is being acquired by government authorities all over the world at the moment is of course facial recognition right have you got some concerns about this technology do you think its a good idea to be able to pick faces out of crowds or could it end badly the question is how much more is gained i think a by using facial recognition in terms of whos it deployed toward and in service of what you know one of the things we find is that often facial Recognition Technology these are argued for around Law Enforcement or terrorism do we have the data yet that says this is radically impacting their reducing terrorism is it working as a deterrent and effective deterrent for people to engage in crime the assumption underneath is very strong which is that we know who were looking for and i think thats a very difficult to prove assumption from the point of view of Law Enforcement. Theres a lot of other mechanisms like this where massive data gathering helps Law Enforcement only in the aftermath not so much in the prevention you know if you capture every piece of information about all the video in a city after crimes been committed that may help you solve the crime it gives you very little ability to prevent the crime and i suspect this will be quite similar so the Predictive Power of it is in no way certain right we just dont know and meanwhile though these concerns about who it can see who it cant see bias so there are some researchers joy one way and he and others who basically have shown that it cant really see at least at the moment it cant see black face is that a problem or one of several actually sees black womens faces the least effectively and so of course we want to make sure that there is accuracy especially if these things are used again to go make an arrest of someone and being used as the so called science that legitimate that arrest and i think this is one of the reasons why those researchers are trying to pursue better accuracy higher accuracy i think there are others who would say. Why are we legitimating facial Recognition Technology as we should actually be resisting them at every level i probably follow a little bit more along those lines and say why do we need these technologies who are they being pointed toward them why are they being trained on vulnerable communities in particular theres a big question why would we want to be included in these facial Recognition Technology is when the systems when theyre doing harm to specific communities and what it makes me think of is you know are we in an era where errors are one of the ways in which we protest these systems over which we have no control because right now it doesnt seem like we have that many mechanisms in place theres no court needed system by which we can. Protest or abolish certain kinds of systems. Or prevent them from being developed right so errors noise that sort of saying that seems increasingly like an area for fruitful discovery for civil disobedience the larger question of what were trying to accomplish as a society is the issue here and the Technology Makes it somewhat explicit if one of the things we think we want is Law Enforcement seeing everything that happens in our society with video covering every square or every inch of the Public Square and facial recognition identifying every person wandering through that is that the society we want to live in its not the society i want to live in i think thats a terrible world and theres something intimate about the face in particular isnt there i feel like were only just starting to clock the ways that the data is gathered about all of us but i feel that people instinctively understand and have a lot of unease about their face being collected thinking about detroit earlier this year the city announced that it would be upping the number of surveillance cameras that its putting into the downtown area so that number will reach 500. 00 after a 5 year mark. And this is an area of detroit thats meant to be redeveloped and you know all sorts of changes are taking place and there are a number of Community Community members that are really upset about this because they feel these cameras wont be only used for socalled security purposes theyll be used for other kind of this Mission Creep idea that it will start to affect how people socialize with one another and its not just the Public Square is that right we see big kind of box Stores Walmart and others starting to test these these facial Recognition Software they say oh well we looked at it for shoplifters but were not going to use that we just want to improve the Customer Experience how comforted are you by that im not i mean i think that again even if the if its not Law Enforcement thats using these technologies but you know what does it mean that were again were trading off our privacy were trading off a certain quality of life that. We have come to rely upon to be ensnared in these systems so that these interoperable systems between companies can track my moves and of course they do this with our engagements on the internet and with our you know Smart Technologies in our in our pockets and in our bags im really concerned about that i mean thats much less as a technologist or as a scientist that worries me about and as a civil libertarian and in particular i think about. Restriction on our freedom to to associate with i associate with someone in the Public Square do i then take on some of that persons implicit guilt the point of these systems is to be modeling the level to which any of us should be subjected to additional Law Enforcement attention thats explicitly the point these techniques these tools are to highlight who Law Enforcement is to Pay Attention to there are plenty of people who will be watching this program who will say well we want to catch criminals in this does make me feel safer but i think these these technologies also get deployed in other ways like using facial Recognition Software when youre in a Job Interview and answering questions and profiling your face and your emotions and deciding whether or not you are reliable or trustworthy and having a machine in fact make a prediction about what whether youll be a great employee based on the kinds of facial gestures that you make i mean these kinds of things are being deployed right now theyre being tested in industry and. That says a lot of mean the what the kind of statistical model of great employee facial gestures looks like i think is incredibly subjective its cultural its not universal it cannot be standardized and yet we will see these things increasingly rolling out. Technology that can pick my face out of a crowd of people may seem innocuous and even kind of impressive. But when you think about the consequences for millions of ordinary people including really serious consequences then the conversation looks a little different romford here in east london is one of the places where metropolitan police have been testing their live facial Recognition Technology and the way that it works is pretty similar. A camera on this van here. Checks everybody who walks by against a database of known suspects if the camera on the software find a match that a person is stopped and searched and potentially arrested. Londons metropolitan police has been trialing facial Recognition Technology since 2016. The u. K. Capital already has the 2nd highest concentration of c. C. T. V. Cameras in the world only beijing has more its why theres a reluctance among Civil Liberties groups like liberty and big brother watch to accept another layer of surveillance. We are supposed to just expect every time its been used and we found that 98 percent of that much is have an accurate identified innocent members of the public as potentially once its criminals 98 percent yes. A lot of this inaccuracy is down to bad data for Quality Images loaded into the algorithms images often taken from low grade c. C. T. V. Footage. The technology is far from proven and its use mired in controversy thats why even a city like San Francisco the home of tech has banned facial recognition from being used by civic authorities including the police but in london right now there is no bam this isnt just catching images of people its an identity check it subjects members of the public to perpetual Police Lineup so what do you say when theres this comment made well actually if we could get this technology right then maybe it will reduce some of the cup. Clients of bias policing and so forth whether were talking about humans eliminating discrimination or technology eliminating discrimination the hostile medians hand and what we can see already with this Experimental Technology being used its never been tested potential racial biases there is no ins had to test the technology and see how its working and see how its affecting the oh so unfortunate i dont think this is going to solve any of those problems. Over the next few hours we would see a number of arrests but not we were told because of matches through facial Recognition Technology these arrests were the result of Old Fashioned police work. More officers on the be leading to more arrests. Just as the trial in romford was about to end for the day plain clothed officers moved in to apprehend a man from a nearby Fast Food Restaurant his image had been flagged by the facial Recognition Technology after police carried out identity checks he was arrested. Artificial intelligence has come a long way since its early days of unfulfilled promise and shaky robots. But were still far from Building Computers that can do all the things humans can do. And were finding that Machine Learning can reflect some of our biases right back at us. In the next episode of the world according to a i will explore the choice we all face a lot of official intelligence figures to improve the lives of everyone. Or to keep power and privilege where they already are. After decades of being programmed with instructions data angry computers can only on their own identifying packages and predicting human behavior. Artificial intelligence can monitor our movement. And decide on a future big picture decodes the world according to ai and exposes the bias inside the machine to on aljazeera. Have been reports of damaging winds in science australia and surprisingly the fronts are coming through one after another have been quite vicious this is the latest one or as with her New South Wales again the winds could be the most destructive thing here is gusts over 100 kilometers inland as well as on the coast the next frontal system coming in to person might do something similar rain and strong winds it doesnt look very much for just think of the scale of what were looking at 17 degrees in perth not a bad temperature really about the same as in melbourne until this front develops and then you guys are rather disappointing possibly even stormy day come wednesday if youre in sydney and also was quite settled on the sun is shining given in the middle twentys. Now given the origin of the current its in new zealand its not particularly cold with this next storm system still to come across the tasman sea and as it comes it will start to bring some significant rain to the west coast the south island but wellington looks like a increase in the cloudy day 15 in oakland 16 so its hardly cold that is tuesday on wednesday the rains probably more or less gone straight at the tail edge does give a disappointing until the evening day i would think the temp is still hovering at best around 14 degrees. Else here this is opportunity to understand its a very different way where there is a feeling we dont leave our. Aljazeera. Hello everyone im from the bar and youre watching the aljazeera news are live from london coming up in the next 60 minutes. Sudans crisis deepens 3 prominent figures from the protest movement are deported to neighboring south sudan. Irans foreign minister says the u. S. Has declared economic war against his country as he meets germanys foreign minister in terror on. Despite major public opposition hong kongs leader files to push on with a controversial new extradition rule. Out of the new research which shows for the 1st time how the plant species are vanishing at an alarming rate. And im Peter Simmons in doha with all your stories including dreaming of a canadian 1st history beckons for the raptors of sauron so it gears up for a big night in the n. B. A. Finals. An opposition figure in Sudan Associated with the rebel group the group says he has been forcibly deported to south sudan yes there are man is one of 3 prominent members of the group who were arrested over the weekend and were released on monday according to city state television well our man has tweeted saying ive been deported against my will by military helicopter from khartoum to juba i was not aware of where they were taken me he says he was tied up in the helicopter together with fellow group leader is small to lob a mubarak adl the trio were arrested after they met the opium Prime Minister met on friday he is trying to mediate between the military chanter and the opposition a little earlier we spoke to yes our man on the phone from juba and he explained what happened. All ring. But actually they took us. Both an indian blood on the military and a green. Card on to go outside sudan is going to be inside sudan you. Cannot go outside. And didnt retire. We like only and then when we crossed the border little south sudan recall that theyre going to have to say. That the government will subsidize their business always are crying about we arent. Buying because a lot of. It will be. I have been deported because those who are running for them now they dont want to earn very soon i. Dont want to change Human Rights Watch has issued a statement about the deportations its that we are concerned about the all between detention of opposition figures and other individuals in recent days on reports the people are still missing following the june the 3rd attack all protested but also i concerned by reports that all Security Forces have obstructed medical services with the authorities to ensure safe access to hospitals and clinics and to reign in all of these the forces of the nile an International Investigation into the killings and other pieces of protest is. And saddams military has ordered more troops onto the streets as protesters observe the 2nd day of a general strike opposition activists called for an indefinite campaign of civil disobedience until the military genter hands over power to a civilian government. Well meanwhile the United Nations is refusing to hand over its peacekeeping mission in darfur to sudans military leadership as it continues its pullout from the region last month the military council wrote a letter formally requesting a transfer of all assets from the mission which is established in 2007 following that awful complex in which hundreds of thousands of civilians were killed but the un says it will only handover its assets to a civilian government the Transitional Military Council. Has decreed to the African Union un mission in darfur known as you know mid to handover its president promises as part of our withdrawal next year in 2022 the Rapid Support forces but that is not in keeping with our existing agreement with the Sudanese Government and our insistence that the facilities be used solely for civilian purposes the latest special report of the chairperson of the African Union commission and the secretary general makes clear that the end users of all u. N. Installations should be civilians it is important that units premises once handed over are used for the benefit of all the people of darfur germanys foreign minister is in terror all looking for ways to preserve the Iranian Nuclear deal piko mall says the european Financial System to circumvent u. S. Sanctions should soon be up and running germany and other e. U. Leaders are continuing to support the 2015 agreement despite washingtons withdrawal last year your feeling. By normandy theres a serious situation in the region as collation of tension is becoming uncontrollable the military action wouldnt be in line with the interests of any party i have spoken with all the parties in my regional visit and no one has called for an escalation of tensions. Thats the message im conveying from the region we had intensive talk today on the nuclear deal germany france and britain call for supporting the deal and we are fulfilling our commitments we cant do any miracle in this regard but we are doing our utmost efforts to prevent the failure of the deal but our own foreign minister says the only way to reduce tension in the region is by ending what he described as an economic war. The United States has declared economic war against iran this war is very dangerous for the region and the International Order the measures taken by the u. S. After its weeks roll from the deal for us mean targeting the reigning nation iran has proven that it hears to International Commitments 15 reports prove this reality but iran is also obligated to defend the rights of the iranian nation and meanwhile the United Nations has confirmed iran is increasing production of enriched uranium to all have previously warned it would do this if new u. S. Sanctions lifted the uns Nuclear Agency says its unclear whether iran has now violated the 2050 nuclear deal. I prefer not to mention the space we create. Due to do so. But i can see the piece of production increased. With the latest measurement of the white house course one could be helped that is following events in the United States. The white house has not responded directly to the Iranian Foreign ministers comments but theres no question that it has continued its what it calls maximum Pressure Campaign on iran the latest of course the sanctions on irans largest Petro Chemical Company they say that this is in response to its Financial Support for the Iran Revolutionary guard corps i r g c the United States of course has labeled the i. R. G. C. As a Foreign Terrorist Organization now these latest sanctions by the trumpet ministration come even as the administration has said that it is willing to sit down with irans leadership and to have talks without preconditions according to the u. S. Secretary of state mike pompei o now these sanctions also follow an escalation by the trumpet ministration of course the deployment of the Carrier Strike group to the persian gulf even as a run has maintained until recently that it has complied with the terms of the 2015 Nuclear Agreement to limit its Nuclear Program saying that this is backed by International Investigators the allegations from the United States however is that iran continues to destabilize the broader middle east it is a threat to u. S. Interests in the area and as a result it will continue to protect its interests even saying that it does not want war it only wants to see that iran does not acquire nuclear weapons. Oh mccurry is agendas the professor at the American University of beirut and he joins me now live from the lebanese capital thanks for being with us on the program last to talk about concerning iran right now lets deal 1st of all with the German Foreign minister in tehran to those high level talks 8 countries really struggling to find a way through this all day a way to keep that deal going without the United States but not actually break the u. S. Sanctions here they have to really for a strike a very delicate balance they agree with the United States to a certain extent that they are on has to be monitored in terms of its Nuclear Production and they are not fully in agreement with the u. S. On the accusations or about irans foreign policies and meddling in the region the french are a little bit closer to the u. S. The germans are not so theyre trying to find a balance that allows them to keep doing business with iran to a certain extent certainly humanitarian sales should be able to go through with the new Payment System that has been set up by the europeans. They dont want to be the europeans dont want to be seen as lackeys of the americans and doing anything that washington sounds them to do because if there is an increasing tension between iran and the u. S. On some god forbid military action the europeans will suffer much much more than the United States would so theyre working very hard to try to cool down the situation and ultimately be involved in mediation of possible but now of course weve got the i. A. E. A. Saying that iran has accelerated its production of enriched uranium it doesnt say how big that acceleration is but to what extent does the i. A. E. A. A coming out and saying that to what extent does that help the u. S. Position and policy on iran. I dont think it helps the u. S. I think what it does is show that if the u. S. Is going to try to strangle iran economically the iranians are going to respond by taking symbolic actions i mean they can increase the enrichment level and the rate of and richmond theyre not producing Nuclear Bombs they dont have enough fissile material to produce Nuclear Bombs and they probably dont have the delivery mechanisms and they say they dont want to make Nuclear Bombs anyway thats why they reached the agreement with obama in the 1st place so its probably a sign of the resolute nature of the iranian position that theyre not going to be pushed around them bullied around the they will respond and they have done so and also in previous weeks with some of these acts in the middle east of act attacks against those so the pipelines and ships in the gulf probably were done by friends of iran all of this is a war theres a war going on which the United States essentially started by breaking the agreement putting on new sanctions the iranians are responding to an extent that they hope doesnt lead to a war but convinces the americans that unilateral sanctions and threats are not going to get them what they want them this is of course the history a few iran is that it doesnt give them is that rami is that a risky policy on behalf of the iranians to sort of effectively test out the countries but its still that signed up to the nuclear deal by increasing the enrich uranium production is that is that a symbolic test for those countries to see what back on to the next. It depends on the level of enrichment and the extent of the enrichment they enrich a little bit more with the centrifuges and other things that they have. Probably its not going to be a big deal but if they start getting close to the levels where they are breaking the agreement then thats going to create more problems but they probably wouldnt do that you know a lot over the iranians want to maintain the agreement they reached the agreement after 3 years of negotiations that theyre very happy with that theyre also probably willing to negotiate new dimensions of a new agreement the americans are now saying theyre ready to talk without the sions the iranians say that they could be persuaded to talk again if the americans drop the sanctions so both sides are making noises about negotiating again and i think to be fair to the americans on the iranians they neither of them want to fight a war obviously they would rather have an agreement than the iranians would probably make some concessions on some of the issues for instance the length of a new agreement instead of 10 years of a b. Longer they might even make some concessions on the distance of some of their missiles but the americans would have to make concessions in return so this is really the key now to to tone down the confrontation on the rhetoric which has happened actually in the last 10 days to some extent both sides saying they want to talk under certain conditions if that you know more mediators in the middle east the you can count the japanese Prime Minister is coming the German Foreign minister was there the Qatari Foreign minister just said his country is trying to play mediating role the iraqis are trying to do something the swiss been involved so theres just an overload of mediation because nobody will benefit from a military confrontation a sign of how serious the situation is on the current was good to get your perspective thanks for joining us there from that me thank you. And there is still plenty more to come on this news hour including more arrests in kazakhstan over an election criticized for its crackdown on dissent. A case the calls National Outrage in india 6 men are convicted of rape and murder of an 8 Year Old Girl. At his school the west indies do their best to raise spirits up the cricket world cup these are all happy. Now the u. S. Has said it is gravely concerned those hong kongs chief executive vows to press ahead with a controversial new extradition will more than a 1000000 people took to the streets on sunday the citys largest demonstration in more than a decade said a cop reports from hong kong. They came and they marched more than 1000000 people crammed hong kong streets. Protesters were united in their anger over the proposed extradition laws that could see fugitives here sent to Mainland China for child. Despite the size of his turn after the citys chief executive says the planned little change will not be scrapped what we will continue to do to communication and explanation there is very little to no merit to be gained to or delay the bill it will just cause more inside and divisive noise in Society Opposition centers on suspicion that fugitives extradited from hong kong wont get a fair trial in Mainland China human Rights Groups are leading the campaign the prodemocracy legislators want the bill show right now kerry lamb is certainly incredible any leader with a right mind facing a protest involving more than 1000000. 00 people would metro have agreed think over the issue but the citys chief executive says the government is duty bound to push ahead its been fast tracked through the alleged. With the government hoping for a vote before the end of the month this is a very important piece of legislation that will help she will uphold justice and also ensure that hong kong will feel the International Obligation interim soft cross. And transnational crimes. But its reignited anger in hong kong sundays largely peaceful rally ended in ballance and police tried to play protesters outside government take over its a few 100 of those demonstrating middlebury into Police Barricades they retaliated with mortar guns and pepper spray the drop little will be read a 2nd time in the citys council on wednesday more protests are expected from both sides in a city way dipping divisions refuse to subside. Aljazeera Hong Kong China says sundays demonstrations against the extradition the way the result of foreign interference brown has the reaction from beijing. Well from beijings perspective hong kong has become a haven for criminals which is why it supports plans for a new extradition bill and on monday the Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed that the Central Government supports car alarms efforts in that regard but also warned of external intervention in hong kongs internal affairs but he wouldnt elaborate on what he meant by that he also appeared to dispute the figure that more than a 1000000 people took part in sundays rally and protest saying he preferred to believe the figure of the Hong Kong Government that no more than 240000 people had participated but the message he wanted to get over again and again was that beijing supports carolan. Firstly the Central Government will continue to firmly support the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to push forward the amendments of the extradition bill secondly china is strongly opposed to any external interventions in hong kongs legislative affairs state controlled media has largely ignored the events in hong kong but the china daily newspaper which tends to reflect government thinking carried an editorial on monday which blamed Foreign Forces for what it called the chaos in hong kong saying the people of hong kong had been hoodwinked the Foreign Ministry spokesman also had another message he said that hong kongs freedoms would continue to be protected by china here as President Donald Trump says hes open to the possibility of imposing further tariffs on chinese imports to make chinas president xi jinping asked the g 20 summit in japan later this month lets set take you live to washington d. C. And speaks out as there is for us in jordan whos following this for us and ross is talking tough again on terrorists. Thats right felicity the president earlier on monday was on twitter essentially saying that if season paying the chinese president did not agree to meet with him during the upcoming g. 20 summit in osaka japan that the retaliation would be the imposition of a 25 percent tariff on some 300000000. 00 worth of goods imported from china into the u. S. Every year but later this is what the president had to say when speaking to reporters right now were getting 25 percent to 250000000000. 00 worth of goods a lot of money is pouring into our treasury weve never gotten 0. 10 from china and that were getting a lot of money from china and i think thats one of the reasons that g. D. P. Was so high in the 1st quarter because of the tariffs that weve taken in from china we always have the option to raise it another 300000000000 to 25 percent and the 25 percent to be much higher than 25 percent. Now of course the suggestion that this money is going into the u. S. Treasury has been disputed by economists felicity actually what happens when tariffs are imposed on consumer goods is that the companies pass on the money that theyre having to pay in tariffs in terms of higher prices and its the consumers who end up paying basically for those tariffs the president is also saying that the deal struck with mexico about dealing with migrants coming from Central America trying to reach the United States is a very very good deal even though there are contradictions and conflicting of statements coming from in particular the Mexican Foreign minister was able to out saying that there were no secret deals reached on agricultural goods or on trying to restrict the number of people trying to reach u. S. Territory but the president is saying that this is a very good moment in terms of dealing with what he has called an Immigration Crisis on the border between the u. S. And mexico and also in washington thank you. Election observers have criticized sundays president ial vote in kazakhstan which saw cassy im talking win by a wide margin the organization for security and cooperation in europe says the vote was tarnished by violations of fundamental freedoms but interestingly walker reports from the capital no salt on it. When has been modest compared to the huge support his predecessor used to enjoy but he still won more than 70 percent of the votes cast in a 77 percent turnout a result he insisted was authentic from about the year before you have the run up or this is a mandate of trust which i must justify in the next 5 years the elections themselves or the citizens of kazakhstan care about their duties there was a very large voter turnout here no one forced anyone it happened naturally. Aljazeera cannot independently verify this video but there are many like hits on social media suggesting widespread ballot stuffing comes the opposition observers said counts from dozens of polling stations in the capital but if it took a rival. Peacekeepers are supposed to bring back control of the country to the government of burma can but the situation have gone has gone from bad to worse with what seems to have started with armed groups fighting the government of burma who are now really hitting the very fabric of society where villagers are attacking each others neighbors attacking each other along ethnic lines these papers in russia have reacted with outrage to the arrest of an investigative journalist on charges of dealing drugs even got an office named for his work exposing corruption among. Its an unusual display of solidarity by 3 leading business newspapers here in russia i am we are got enough thats what its all over their front pages today the arrest of the investigative journalist has cost an outrage not only among his colleagues and closest friends but in widespread circles around the country even up to the government level and state media some anchors come out to his defense and ask questions about his arrest he was arrested on thursday and police say they found drugs on his body and his apartment but its widely believed that these drugs were planted and that he is arrested for his work uncovering corruption practices here in moscow region. Plants are the basis of all life on earth providing the oxygen we breathe and the food we eat but a new report warns that is under threat the extinction study found more than 570. 00 plant species had been wiped out since the mid 17 hundreds that researches say there are still major gaps in their knowledge so that number is optimistic the politics tinctured rate is 500. 00 times greater now than before the Industrial Revolution the total number of extinct plants is more than twice the number of extinct birds mammals and amphibians combined the quest for food is one of the main drivers of the decline specifically the destruction of Natural Habitats and change of land use such as converting land into fields for farming. Well talk to maria about and so there is a plant taxonomist at the Royal Botanic Gardens based here in the u. K. And shes with me now in the studio thanks so much for coming in clearly taken a lot of Research Many years of research to get to this point but how concerned should we be. To be honest i am quite frightened. I find it difficult to really take on board the fact that these 571 plants we will never see again. I love little blue flowers called forget me nots and just understanding that 2 species of forget me nots will never be seen theyre gone forever the most frightening thing about it is that we dont understand what the consequences will eventually be plants make the infrastructure of ecosystems plants build ecosystems as well as give everybody food and air so without plants Everything Else will go too and we dont even understand exactly how all life is dependent on one another font species have died out but as they die out of the species emerged was it Something Like 2000 new species a year or something that would seem like a huge number. Does that mean that were overblowing the problem you clearly do you clearly dont think that think so of the rates of plant extinction that weve seen in the study are so far above anything that could happen naturally i think theres no question that humanity is responsible im what should you manage to be doing about it we hear a lot about the extinction of you know rare animals and how about upsets the ecosystem to what extent are plants even more important we must stop taking plants for granted people walk past plants every day without even noticing them. But many many plants in tropical countries havent been documented yet we dont know how many species are out there at the Royal Botanic Gardens q we have a collection of 8000000. 00 plant specimens which include many under scribed species and many species we dont understand yet so item number one for me is appreciate how beautiful plants really are no to some one a daily basis and then we can notice when theyve gone missing and we can know which ones are the research is continuing but some people have said its almost like a plant growing this we care about the animals you know we love animals most people in the world love animals and they understand the need for them but actually were not really aware we have that we have a blindness towards the plight of plants if you like and i find it honestly puzzling jenny plants are so beautiful and so engaging and when ive seen many plants i want to go back and look at some more pretty plants so my job as a plant the economist i guess a focus here is a great job for you isnt it finally what do you hope will be the result do you think of this Research Clearly more research it is is needed you want the world to sit up and listen are you optimistic for the future. I am optimistic for my colleagues in biodiverse countries them. Documenting their plan by diversity better i think what id really like to see is people noticing the plot and start all around us every day of our lives noticing which ones are rare knowing what their names are knowing when theyre missing one day and thats the only way you can document absolutely absolutely the knowledge we cant skip the plan stage we have to have a really good to talk to you fascinating but have ploy blindness over again very well and so thanks so much thank you. California will become the 1st u. S. State to pay for Health Benefits for some adults living there illegally the plan agreed by democrats will apply to almost 100000 glow income adults aged between 19 and 25 california will start taxing people who dont have Health Insurance to help pay for the program the decision revives a nationwide penalty was imposed under former president Barack Obamas Health Care Law will be the matthews is a professor of Political Science at Cypress College in Southern California and says the measure could help pave the way for other u. S. States to implement a Single Payer Health care system. It could set an example for other states like new york the largest states the more affluent states to pursue this path as well but its actually reflection of governor Gavin Newsoms attempt to get a single payer system ultimately in california he campaigned on it he actually said the beginning we took office hed like to implement that in the beginning of getting part of the segment of population to be covered even the undocumented folks to some extent i think the Supreme Court the justices that are the conservative ones that he appointed the trump appointed you know the gorsuch and kavanaugh these does this is have not been proven yet on the economic level economic decision such as this they might actually go along with the law in california this particular writer freedom to do this because they also believe in decentralized government so its possible that this could go through and be upheld by the courts its just only one segment those only about 90000. 00 people 98000000. 00 that still leaves millions of california uncovered both who are born here legally and working here as well as undocumented american californians who are here who are not covered with health care is very dangerous because when people who work in Public Sector jobs like in restaurants or other places they must be ensured that they are covered health wise so they can go take care of any potential disease or infection they could have that get passed on the rest of population so its just a practical question also a philosophical one which goes to the point that health care is a human right that should be guaranteed for all and thats something the most modern civilized countries have. Always pollution of course is an issue in many of the worlds cities whether its a crawl factory work or construction but in gaza they have a very unusual problem i mean crease in the number of churches many with services help through the night has led to complaints from michael people as im watching reports from the capital of craw some are now resorting to legal action. Shirts jerseys the slogan we the north is everywhere in the city i even saw a dog wearing a we the north kerchief around its neck a few minutes ago and weve been talking to veteran sportscasters and other people here in the city who followed sports in toronto for a long time and they say theyve never seen anything like this especially for basketball because as you know canada has always been associated most strongly with hockey but today basketball is king at least for now road i want to expand a little bit on that last point of you as you say i saw key traditionally the biggest sport in canada but one of the reps has done so for at least to boost bosket bulls profile across the country. But you know there always was a sort of a constituency if you will for basketball but now i think its fair to say that that has crossed the borders and that people who only follow hockey or primarily follow hockey are now very enthusiastic about the raptors and about the game of basketball and there are cultural changes involved as well peter you know canada and especially toronto is a very diverse place the city. Is more than 50 Percent People of color high immigrant population and when you have that when you have kids growing up in urban environments what is simpler to to play a game that involves a ball and a pair of sneakers or a game that involves ice sticks pads skates everything so theres an element of that in it as well i think that while hockey is still you know immensely popular in this country there are a lot of people who are actually turning even kids turning to basketball as their number one sport rob reynolds in toronto well leave it there thank you very much for your time and enjoy the game. Says hes been forcibly deported to south sudar usa our man is one of 3 prominent members of the group who were arrested over the weekend and were released on monday according to Sudanese State Television all minors tweeted saying i have been deported against my will by a military helicopter from khartoum to do but i was not aware of where they were taking me he says he was tied up in the helicopter together with fellow group leaders. A mubarak adul. Well thats really what arrested after they met the ethiopian Prime Minister that on friday he is trying to mediate between the minutes he joins us on the opposition italy we spoke to yesterday all metal plane from geneva and he told us what had happened. Already they can rebuild our. But actually they took us. Physically and it was an indian vote please call in the military and grin and i asked him that i dont want to go outside sudan is anyone going to go along with. Inside sudan. Cannot go outside. Well Human Rights Watch has issued a statement about the deportations it sets we are concerned about the arbitrary detention of opposition figures and other individuals in recent days and reports of people still missing following the june the 3rd attack on protesters we are also concerned by reports that armed Security Forces have obstructed medical services to the authorities to ensure safe access to hospitals and clinics and to reign in all abusive forces and allow an International Investigation into the killings and other abuses of protestors and sudans military has ordered more troops onto the streets as protesters observe the 2nd day of a general strike opposition activists call for an indefinite campaign of civil disobedience until the military hands dont to hand over power to a civilian government. And the United States is sending a senior diplomat to sudan to urge the parties to resume talks we get more now from al jazeera in jordan in washington d. C. What more do you know ross. Well felicity table or not she was the assistant secretary for African Affairs is going to be meeting with both leaders of the military currently in charge in khartoum as well as with leaders of the opposition to urge them to i get back to discussions in order to bring about a civilian led government the us has been very concerned large frankly by the violence carried out by the especially of a week ago monday and it says that this is putting in jeopardy the chances for sudan to emerge from 30 years of military dictatorship its also worth pointing out that your knowledge is then going to go to his ababa where he will talk not just with leaders in ethiopia but with the leadership of the African Union which has suspended sudan from the National Continental group because of its ongoing political crisis this is significant because the u. S. Is very much concerned that an opportunity to move saddam from 30 years of military dictatorship to an independent civilian led government could be very much in jeopardy they are force theyve already issued a number of statements in tandem with norway and the United Kingdom condemning the june 3rd attack on demonstrators outside military headquarters but the fact that people are knowledge will be in khartoum to speak directly with the sudanese military leaders as well as with the opposition indicates that this is a top Foreign Policy priority for the trumpet ministration else in washington thank you. Well meanwhile the United Nations is refusing to hand over its peacekeeping mission in darfur to sue dolls military leadership as it continues its pullout from the region last month the military council writes a letter formally requesting a transfer of all assets from the mission which was established in 2007 following the duffel conflicts in which hundreds of thousands of civilians were killed by the u. Germanys foreign minister is in terror all looking for ways to preserve the Iranian Nuclear deal high crime all says a european Financial System to circumvent u. S. Sanctions should soon be up and running germany and other e. U. Leaders are continuing to support the 2015 agreement despite washingtons withdrawal last year the fear that its going to want to respond only theres a serious situation in the region as collation of tension is becoming uncontrollable a military action wouldnt be in line with the interests of any party ive spoken with all the parties in my regional visit and no one has called for an escalation of tensions. Thats the message im conveying from the region we had intensive talk today on the nuclear deal germany france and britain call for supporting the deal and we are fulfilling our commitments we cant do any miracle in this regard but we are doing our utmost efforts to prevent the failure of the deal but irans foreign minister says the only way to reduce tension in the region is by ending what he described as an economic war. The United States has declared economic war against iran this war is very dangerous for the region and the International Order the measures taken by the u. S. After its weeks roll from the deal for us mean targeting the reigning nation iran has proven that it appears to International Commitments 15 reports prove this reality but iran is also obligated to defend the rights of the iranian nation well meanwhile the United Nations has confirmed iran is increasing production of enriched uranium tehran had previously warned it would do they seek new u. S. Sanctions wont lift it the uns Nuclear Agency says its unclear whether iran has now violated the 2015. I prefer not to mention the space we create. Due to do so. S. Interests in the area and as a result it will continue to protect its interests even saying that it does not want war it only wants to see that iran does not acquire nuclear weapons. The u. S. They came and they marched more than 1000000 people crammed hong kong streets. Despite the size of his turn up the citys chief executive says the planned rule of change will not be scrapped now we will continue to do the communication and explanation there is very low to merit to be gained the tool of delaying the bill it would just cause more inside and do business in Society Opposition centers on suspicion that fugitives extradited from hong kong wont get a fair trial in Mainland China human Rights Groups and leading the tempo in the prodemocracy legislators want the bill show it now carry limas certainly incredible any leader with the right mind facing a protest involving more than 1000000 people with metro they have agreed think over the issue but the citys chief executive says the government is duty bound to push ahead its been fast tracked through the Legislative Council but the government hoping for a vote before the end of the month this is a very important piece of legislation that will help she will uphold justice and also ensure that hong kong will fulfill the International Obligation interim soft cross boundary and transnational crimes. Rain and strong winds doesnt look very much for just think of the scale of what were looking at 17 degrees in person not a bad temperature really the same as in melbourne until this front develops and then you guys are rather disappointing possibly even stormy day come wednesday if youre in sydney and also its quite settled on the sun is shining given in the middle twentys now given the origin of the current it in new zealand its not particularly cold this next storm system still to come across the tasman sea and as it comes in it will start to bring some significant rain to the west coast the south island but wellington looks like a increase in the cloudy day 15 in oakland 16 so its hardly cold that is tuesday on wednesday the rains probably more or less gone straight with the tail edge does give a disappointing until the evening day i would think the temps are still hovering at best around 40 degrees. Sustainable Food Production is one of the greatest challenges for the future. With Global Demand for food set to increase by nearly 70 percent by 2050. Agriculture is one of the most polluting and ecologically damaging industries so. If we want to keep food on the table without continuing to ravage our natural environments. We need to completely rethink how off to industries work. And russell beard in finland where one restaurant is championing a hyper local circular economy to create a revolutionary approach to dining a mass nursery in the end its the scientists come batting jellyfish films by taking them out of the sea and on top. In developed countries like finland its hard to imagine that were in the thick of a global food crisis. These helsinki shelves are stacked to the hilt with a wide variety of tasty treats where salami. The worst a true cost of all this choice to our increasingly beleaguered planet reindeer spring roll. A global food system is in credit. Wasteful to use huge amounts of energy water and land to grow food and fly thousands of miles around the world only for much of it to remain a money to this incredibly inefficient and balanced operation. Of a post i dont know if my pronunciation is correct but what i. Call vocal style ok so you can have anything around to see if you can get some statistics about the amount of food that is wasted so if you imagine this pool of bread is total food produced in the world the last 10 percent during cultivation 7 percent is lost after the harvest 12 percent which is lost during processing or point of sale and i know their level percent is lost after its been purchased by means in total over a 3rd of the food the jews worldwide is wasted just thrown away and i guess thats something shocking to me. A growing movement of pioneers are taking steps to fix this global problem. This is ultimately a 5 star restaurant aims to be the model of sustainability all the ingredients are local and all the process is are designed to do as little damage to the planet as possible eliminating all the polluting effects of industrial agriculture is the brainchild of chef henry allen for the uninitiated can you explain a little bit about what ultimate is and why why you set it up it all started when me and my colleagues. Were taking the bins out and we were thinking like how can i mean we make this much waste how could we do the things better for the environment for the customer that is our biggest ambition one way to do that is by going hyper local in other words. Right here in the restaurant ive seen a vertical farm before but never in a restaurant have to say this is great the main thing about the system is. Hydroponic circulates from up here the plant takes always the water all it from the roots ok its 95. 00 less water than conventional farming and the best thing for me in this idea is that we can cut the fresh herbs just before the service of every day there is minimal waste. Its very sweet and from the seed to fully grown in this system one week totally organic no 1st decides no fertilizer nothing. Is based on the principles of circular economics where waste is seen as a resource this approach minimises the need for transport water and energy and even forms lifestyle on slate edible Carbon Neutral crickets. Yes you know the idea light in baltimore serve up over 1000 crickets each week in their 5 star dishes with cricket larvae growing into fully grown adults within 2 months. This is the bigger home oh yes. Its so can you give us a sense of how the Little Critter has. This notion of a circular economy we can use all the stems of the salads or the peels of the cucumber if we feed them one week with basal leaves there they will taste more basal and thats where we dont have to throw away thing away. Almost any. Mission is fundamentally about changing our attitude to the food to eat and preparing us for a future where meats like beef may not be so readily available. 100 gram of crickets. 22 grams of sure a protein. Say 99 percent less water and rolling beef. So their Carbon Footprint is its like nothing henrys also trialing a protein rich. The idea is a so innovative being seen as the future of Food Production on this world and beyond this is cost of this is also the 1. 00 thing that. Is interesting about this space agency yeah well you know this its a potato space and protect. Us called air upon it so if the growth in the air oh yeah now that is something you dont see every day is it as wet yes. They still cant moist yes but this way you dont really need any soil the benefits about this is produce 10 times more potatoes that traditional way so this is this is for real for you guys this is not just a kind of a marketing stunt we dont have to be millionaires we just need to you know roll things forward make people think. Were talking about. Certification climate change. Stuff. And. Later on henrys invitation ready. The 1st to travel just want to down the road to see if these principles of circular economics can work on a much larger industrial scale. Farming exactly. Break. Actor turned Farmer Robert jordan also has a vertical farm but this one is on another level. Who moves a jacket its a different season in say disney. Herb safari we go means possible again some coriander i need to speak to you to have kind of a glass thats just what it is so this is entirely electric yes theres no no sunlight used to hold the wire meant a more efficient growth. Of all your yield is a much waste from an operation like this we grow in a biodegradable pulp so we have no plastics inside the growth area anymore everything is biodegradable. Goal is to prove that these hyper sustainable take needs could one day be in every city and town in the world transporting. These 2 leaves these peat that just fall around the world its not that clever it should always be produced locally and consumed locally i love that rather than taking the food to the plate taking the farm to get it to the cost of the proposed today lay off again. You can see that theyre constantly working on improving the efficiency of the whole operation even this isnt truly waste because its going to get compost and been used on the farms that say theyre reconceptualizing the concept of waste. My way back to ultimately henrys asked me to pick up some supplies for tonights Dinner Service 1st 150 come to the right place right time. How are you doing what you do you know you were growing mushrooms were growing oyster mushrooms on coffee west finish people are crazy about mushrooms and they drink a lot of coffee. Giant back then that is an absolute perfect specimen these are ready to harvest there will be harvested today actually we dont want to hold you up we love to get the. Team clicks use coffee grounds from businesses right. The ground. Troops need to explode into light. Its. Amazing and you can just grab the whole cluster and then twist it until it comes off there you go. Thats enough to eat. We have Consumer Product our we call it the healthy any growcott and basically you see its the same as we have in our farm but this is so that people can grow it at home if youre a normal coffee drinker you can you can make do with your own coffee grounds i can imagine being quite magical to watch these incredible kind of peaches emerge and yet here in finland there is now quite active community of home growers encouraging consumers to grow food at home the kind of strategy that will reduce our dependence on industrial agriculture. Team of 3000 of the kids and even run workshops to teach people how to grow fantastic funky. Alright so weve done. Mushrooms back their restaurant going to cook a lot. So whats the hands ready to go i already. Told im going to take the crickets. Oh my god what are your. Dreams and hopes which are good over there because the crickets are going up there and the mushrooms which. Im so excited local its about as low as i can get you know. You know fish at one of these the rice yeah. Right in case of prickly little legs yeah well. I think its. A really nice protein pretty yeah yeah it really is thank you thank you so much is this a share that you can use these ideas can go mainstream is what they want whether its you know the circular economy or the hyper local production or just the general transparency of the operation could start to see it grow but peace within that is feeding the world and reduce. But i dont like taps into. The worlds growing demand for food is pushing ever increasing pressure on Natural Resources. Food Waste Campaign as believe our environment may be close to breaking point food is the single biggest impact that humans have on nature we all deforesting the earth to grow more food is by far the biggest user freshwater the single biggest source of Carbon Dioxide emissions and the biggest reason why were in the middle of the mass species extinction event the 6th the planet earth has faced at least a 3rd of the worlds food is currently being wasted were talking about ugly fruit and vegetables on farms being wasted because they dont comply with cosmetic standards were talking about huge heaving shopping oils the food which is just going to end up in the supermarket bins and the reason why. Is because the supermarkets know thats what triggers our response of taking and filling our basket even though week after week on average people are wasting 20 percent of the groceries that theyre buying in those stores its a system with entrenched waste within it we do have the power as individuals to waste less shift away from most ecologically destructive practices should give us hope that we can flip this enormous problem into one of the most delicious tools to tackle compartmental melt. With over 7500 kilometers of coastline italy has relied on the bounty of the sea for thousands of years. But hidden beneath this is your hotel and environmental catastrophe maybe and away. Im a student for a new and i finished chef and food writer from name. 30 years. Italian cuisine is one of my passions so when i heard its these fishing morses were under threat i just had to investigate and here in 7 a space where italians are facing a rather stinging problem. Jellyfish numbers are up by 400 percent in the last 13 years alone with the tentacle terrace swamping the coastline and damaging the delicate marine ecosystem. But sometimes one problem can solve another. Ive come to lead change to find out how jellyfish could help alleviate the impending food crisis becoming an ingredient in the italian kitchen. First though ive met up with marine pilot just took to stefano priorly who is researching the rise in jellyfish numbers there is Scientific Evidence that there are some increases as particularly in causal arias subject to anthropogenic impacts human impacts on the cause may produce an announcement of the frequency and their windows from charlie fish. Dr stefanos Research Suggests jellyfish numbers are booming due to a variety of manmade fact. Artificial waterways but the suez canal which connects the red sea to the mediterranean are transporting new jellyfish species. Changes enabling these new comers to survive with some the sea temperatures in the mad rising by 1. 15 degrees c. In the last 3 decades. How bad is the problems there ecological impact of jellyfish is equivalent to 2 miles from the salon and they are top predators so they can have an impact on the functioning of the marine ecosystem some cases so we have large eliphaz wish to reach dance it is life up to 300. 00 or 400. 00 pounds per square. Meters along the coastline so this would affect particularly human activities life. Swimmy on the along the course or fishery and even our cultural plants may be affected because in some cases the venomous shellfish can kill hundreds or thousands of fish in a few days these booms are using local Fishing Industries is estimated that in the north rarity they cost italian fishing fleet 8500000. 00 euros a year stefano sent me north to the aquarium of genoa to discover how the creek to its unique reproductive process is really compounding the problem babies found when live here the view there may be literally fish. Curator soviet lover are no is breeding thousands of jellyfish. This little she doesnt know about these potent pulsing creatures. Why are the jellyfish so efficient reproducing they are doing that relieve a huge a quantity of sperm and egg they feel alive in this that we have plenty of love all this can go on the bottom of this thing he said on the bottom and became a 4 leaf each fall if theyre relieved after division a very big number of jellyfish live in the room or that their fans saying they feel. Jellyfish are so prolific appraising to single adult can lead up 245000 eggs a day these ancient invertebrates existed since before the dinosaurs and they inhabit every ocean and. Jellyfish swarms that decimated arre salmon fisheries and hit the tourist industry of a strain but one beach saw 13000 bathers get stung in a single week. Back in their chair ive heard that a Research Project is close to a breakthrough its called go jelly. This is our love. The internet and her colleagues aim to show food saying to her. That jellyfish are a safe plentiful food source. But serving poisonous jellyfish makes me a little nervous for their own safety its not you know were with the starving it just feels this because it just is this a different docs a compound so each jellyfish you will measure yes we measure the way after the frog and the liquid the need to adjourn in order to extract different venoms of jellyfish that could be left out for your man and jellyfish that are released say and to netherlands Research Shows that most mediterranean jellyfish are perfectly safe to eat with just a small number needing toxins removed through freezing simply by washing its giving me hope that this could be a genuine food for the future but if it has the challenges that you face in the year of jellyfish just consider it nice and. This could be changed if for starve them or stray that they are very powerful or a source of food that could be important for local fisherman local restaurants or for local economy and. If jellyfish meat goes mainstream here it could help rebalance marine ecosystems and read it in motions of this gelatinous menace. And with 80 percent protein and just 5 percent it could also become a highly prized alternative to me. Farming knife stock is responsible for 2 food 1. 5 percent of Greenhouse Gas emissions. So eating jellyfish as a substitute. It could help reduce the very Global Warming that causes the blooms. Already popular in much of the far east. But right now they cant legally be sold as food anywhere in europe. So antebellum has provided some jelly fish and sent me to go chinese collaborating sharing fabriano viva. Please can we cook with bass ok now call the idea i say i do yeah yeah. This is 2 different spaces of jelly fish this brawl is perfect to roll over not about theres only cold treat the most tender jelly fish and aims to cook it slowly but 1st we wash it in an ice bath raising the head to ensure it doesnt lose the taste of the sea for piano avoids all seasoning no salt no pepper only ok so look cooking this movie that is in the water about why did you decide to work with go jelly radio all of you put your good in all types that leg that day every night oh yeah. When the jelly fish comes out of the suv be its finished off in the oven the piano the vision for the picture and for me that is truly truly exciting fusing traditional italian cooking with striking martin ingredients for beyond all plans to serve the jelly fish with spears of campari gin and parsley on a bed of italian leaves we have a taste it looks like its you. Its time for me to taste for pianos creation on the go jenny team has joined us to see the results for themselves. It truly magnificent. I love it i dont like it i love it still its just it really knows jellyfish is delicious with a very light seafood taste and a texture. But if jellyfish are going to make it on to dinner plates across the world the public will have to. Try it. You can find the some of the things that people are looking now so not low calorie snack and also a good taste as so you have all the ingredients of all of the food to be appreciated about it cast. I feel privileged certified jellyfish this has given me a taste of what the future might hold if we all get on board and find this new food then we might have a chance of progressing the damage we have done to our. Food pioneers around the world a planning the diets of the future. Globally over a quarter of ice free land is used for grazing animals. Causing enormous habitat damage. But a Californian Company may have a solution. The impossible. A soit based meat substitutes that looks and tastes just like the real thing. Meanwhile in israel scientists the farming mediterranean fruit flies as a source of protein. Using 99 percent less land and emitting just 170. 00 of the Greenhouse Gases generated when raising regular life stuff. And in new zealand produce. Its. Possible. To help prevent the decline of. Monday was the 2nd day of a general strike in sudan intended to paralyze the country and force the Transitional Military Councils hand you know i mean martyrs have died a lot of things have happened with the civil uprising and a lot of people have been affected for those who say the civil disobedience isnt successful i saw it with my own eyes and these are lies. Talks between the opposition and the military ground to a halt after a crackdown on a sit in a week ago the Central Committee of sudan doctors says almost 120 people died the Health Ministry says the death toll is half that an investigation is underway if. And so then we help form in Service Providers reign and become a. Real. Ready comer has been completely shut down only a few companies and banks have actually. Been working where they work. On. The misery i want to ask you also about the scale of the call busy the response to the call to civil disobedience weve been saying pitches on the ground of empty streets but now were also hearing from opposition groups who say that it will end on wednesday. No actually they were not and then once they printed and. They were on the National Conference an official conference from the Russian Military Council Estates delivering power from the transition theres a bunch. Of them and thats when theyre actually going to give up on the event even though its sort of difficult to maintain and the micro going to get back to normality how big of a disobedience is it to actually hold the video in the picture of the bench and the social media and the big evidence and the proof of the influence of the disobedience on the transition if you counsel is that of the actually the official spokesman of the 10s of minutes accountant actually came out on a press conference and useful. To the power of freedom and change that we should end the civil disobedience which is a clear statement from in the civil disobedience actually affected than by or during. The movement in the country im called to actually and its like a ghost town most 99 no cars in the streets no no side by brokers no people walking the streets 99 percent of all the shops the most the farmers are very close. Most of the Service Provider is shut down. In the city and none of us saying that the civil disobedience is going to continue but we are hearing from various factions of the opposition that they plan to end that call on wednesday so give us an idea of just how unified doesnt even intifada division is amongst us who who are protesting. Actually there are more divisions and then the beautiful thing when the one their religion started back in 1900 december Many Political parties have different agendas and all of these are unified under the freedom of change who signed the treaty designed to pay for the freedom that the carriage moving 29. 00 after the crackdown the 3rd journey. Neighbors here and there supporting each other by food providing water for those who are poor for the neighbors who need some transport started working today. Movement today in the street more than you more cards can be seen in the streets but most of the shops are closed thats one thing and limiting your insulting in the capital busy that were now also hearing is a set of crackdown in darfur where the Rapid Support force as has had their roots as a judge we want to know about whats happening now. Well theyve been preventing the pressure down and hours able to actually receive and thats what. There was an attack in the one in the city of. Villages i begin about 150 people were killed basically relieved its because the margin like. N. Has described an attack on a village in central mali that killed nearly 100 people the government says gunmen attacked a village of the dogan community and several houses in the mopti region no one has claimed responsibility for sundays attack but there have been several incidents of violence between duggan hunters and rival felonies in the past the 2 have been fighting for access to land and resources while women and children were among those killed and the government says it will hold those responsible to account. At this moment. Once more. Bullets unjust and how do we act in a country. While the un says it supporting government efforts to help the victims the mission is coordinating its response in support of 1000000 authorities and the United Nations system in mali is mobilizing to provide humanitarian assistance to help people affected the mission also provided air support this morning in support of the mali and government to prevent future of further attacks now from neighboring senegal algis there is no explains just what this attack means for the people of. The attack took place in the early hours in the morning where villagers were still asleep when men on motorbikes carrying machetes and guns killed people indiscriminately at least 95 people had been killed in this village called. Do go on a village thats about 50 kilometers away from mookie which is in the center of mali you know no one has claimed responsibility for this attack the 1000000 Security Forces are on the ground to try to secure the area to ensure that there are no more attacks in the air and try to apprehend those that may have been responsible for this it comes just months before there was another attack dog on fighters then attacking a full lonny villagers and what seems to be really an increase of intercommunal violence between the semi nomadic herders group that are the philosophies and the local doggone fighters each trying to vying for control of the land the full on these for their animals and the dog ran for agriculture in this is of course the increase of violence in mali it comes just days before the u. To classical. And Economic Crises in venezuela take a toll on the sick and the vulnerable. And in sport the west indies do their best to raise spirits at the cricket world cup as the action. Now germany is foreign minister as in iran looking for ways to preserve the new kid dale says a european Financial System designed to avoid u. S. Sanctions should be up and running soon the e. U. Along with the rest of the signatories to the 2015 agreement a standing by it after the u. S. Withdrew last year to finish. By normandy if there is a serious situation in the region as collation of tension is becoming uncontrollable the military action would be in line with the interests of any parties have spoken with all of the parties in my regional visit and no one has called for an escalation of tensions thats the message im conveying from the region we had intensive talk today on the nuclear deal germany france and britain call for supporting the deal and we are fulfilling our commitments we cant do any miracle in this regard but we are doing our utmost to prevent the failure of the deal. And irans foreign minister says his country has never broken the promise as it made under the new. Go to work to. The United States has declared economic war against iran this war is very dangerous for the region and the International Order the measures taken by the u. S. After its weeks roll from the deal for us mean targeting the reigning nation iran has proven that it appears to International Commitments 15 a year reports prove this reality but iran is also obligated to defend the rights of the iranian nation. Allowed also jabari has more from tehran. The arabian foreign minister held a 2 hour meeting with his german counterpart in what is known as the hall of mirrors in the Foreign Ministry in the capital on monday the to discuss various issues but at the core of it was the future of the Nuclear Agreement between iran and the International Community now the German Foreign minister said that the country is very concerned about escalation in this region between iran and the United States and also the future of this agreement is something the arrhenius want to see the European Union uphold it the Iranian Foreign minister says that they have to make good on their promises and that the future of any other dialogue and discussions about irans various programs such as the Ballistic Missile program depends on how this nuclear goes forward while the u. N. Has confirmed that iran is increasing production of enriched uranium tehran has said it would boost output if there was no progress on lifting sanctions ahead of the u. N. Nuclear agency said its unclear whether the latest enrichment levels violate the agreement. Not to mention the specific. Due to do so. But i can see the piece of production increased. With the latest measurement well Hillary Mann Leverett is a former White House National security official and coauthor of going to tehran why america must accept the Islamic Republic of iran and she joins us now from washington d. C. Henry do we know from the i. A. E. A. Just how much iran a scaling up production how seriously should we regard all this. We dont know the director general of the i. A. E. A. The International Organization charged with monitoring irans compliance did not give us particular details the importance i read in his comments were that while iran is increasing its production as a valid to do when trump revoked the waivers that would allow iran to comply with the deal even though theyve increased their production. Director general mana did not say that iran was increasing its stockpile thats critically important because the Nuclear Agreement requires iran to stay at a certain threshold of stockpiled low enriched uranium so the director general is concerned about irans actions that the Trump Administration has forced it into but has not said that iran is yet is violating the agreement here in your mind is this a bit of a game of chicken a test of how fall both sides can push the other and what might the u. S. Do next. Well 8 the United States is certainly pushing iran very very hard in fact it has set iran on a collision course to force it out of compliance with the Nuclear Agreement because the Trump Administration has revoked waivers that allowed russia and oman to essentially take out any excess stockpile that iran could produce of low enriched uranium inside iran that allowed iran to comply with the agreement and now the trauma administration has made that at some point when iran has a big enough stockpile has made it impossible for iran to comply the other thing the administration from what i understand this is not been officially put out yet but from what i understand the administration is seriously considering is to sanction the iranian Counterpart Organization to the e. U. Mechanism the European Union mechanism to allow iran to pursue humanitarian trade with European Union previously secretary pompei you had said that that was far humanitarian trade is fine but now from what i understand the hardliners in the white house are are trying to designate the iranian counterpart which would make it impossible for the europeans to pursue that trade so each day there seems to be another another piece out there to try to pursue this maximum Pressure Campaign even with some rhetoric from President Trump who says he wants to talk to the iranians well if hillary given the actions and the u. S. Response sort of follow that you were telling us about give us a read it do you think that there is hope for any hope patrol for some kind of a new agreement to replace the. I would put some hope and i would remain very cautious about this and i dont want to heighten expectations but i have some hope in the japanese. Prime minister aves visit to tehran i think later this week or even perhaps even tomorrow at this point she is someone regarded as a good friend of President Trump and someone who is regarded as a as a neutral fair arbiter i think by many in iran japan also has vital Energy Security interests and vital economic interests both in its relationship with the u. S. And with iran and has tried to really pursue a very careful approach to both countries i have some hope in that visit that at least could defuse tensions for the European Union for the European Union its a very difficult situation because President Trump doesnt have very much regard im sorry to say for his german counterpart and germany is really the powerhouse of the European Union so without a Good Relationship there theres no real u. S. Support for the europeans to make good on their end of the iran Nuclear Agreement so i dont have a lot of hope in that channel but perhaps for perhaps for japan perhaps for qatar for iraq for oman those channels i would put a little bit more hope in to diffuse the tension Hillary Mann Leverett a former White House National security official always good to speak to an aljazeera henery Syrian Government and russian and strikes have killed at least 27 people in and neighboring aleppo province the attacks targeted dozens of towns and villages across the last rebel controlled territories in the north of the country the White Helmets a Syrian Rescue Group says the majority of those killed children president Bashar Al Assads forces launched an offensive to recapture parts of how many provinces in april more than 300000 people have been displaced and hospitals have been attacked since the beginning of the offensive. Its our responsibility to represent our people in the National Assembly and hold the government accountable to stop my father from attending the National Assembly session the National Accountability Bureau Personnel arrived here today without a judicial order to arrest him we registered our reservations with them and under protest we gave him into custody under protest because we always respect the law. Now the u. S. Says its gravely concerned about the erosion of Hong Kong Special legal status and follows mass protests over a bill facilitating extradition to Mainland China overnight to say more than a 1000000 people took part another demonstration is planned for wednesday hong kongs chief executive is standing by the bill saying it simply closes a legal loophole. While we will continue to do the communication and explanation there is fear in the 2 america to be gained to or delay the bill it will just cause more insight and divisiveness in society while beijings accusing outsiders of stoking the protests china correspondent adrian brown explains well from beijings perspective hong kong has become a haven for criminals which is why it supports plans for a new extradition bill and on monday the Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed that the Central Government supports car alarms efforts in that regard but also warned of external intervention in hong kongs internal affairs but he wouldnt elaborate on what he meant by that he also appeared to dispute the figure that more than a 1000000 people took part in sundays rally and protest saying he preferred to believe the figure of the Hong Kong Government that no more than 240000 people had participated but the message he wanted to get over again and again was that beijing supports kerry. Firstly the Central Government will continue to firmly support the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to push forward the amendments of the extradition bill secondly china is strongly opposed to any external interventions in hong kongs legislative affairs state controlled media has largely ignored the events in hong kong but the china daily newspaper which tends to reflect government thinking carried an editorial on monday which blamed Foreign Forces for what he called the chaos in hong kong saying the people of hong kong had been hoodwinked the Foreign Ministry spokesman also had another message he said that hong kongs freedoms would continue to be protected by china and they allow as a political activist in hong kong and she wants the International Community is exact more pressure on the government. The city is split asunder there are those who are on the side of beijing willingly or unwillingly but there are many who are terrified of you know the chinese legal system coming into hong kong and this you can see more than a 1000000 people march yesterday very peacefully there were those who were very rich and very poor very old and very young and they were all united by their fear of the Chinese Communist party and the chinese legal system coming into hong kong it will be like a Truck Driving through picking up making a big hole in one country 2 systems then we will be crushed we will have one country one system human rights trodden said National Boundaries anybody anywhere have a right to speak out when they see human rights problems existing so i dont i dont care read ok they can come on the rest of us but we have to continue to speak up and i want britain i want britain and the International Community to keep an eye on hong kong we are a lovely by brit free city and nobody wants to see a skirmish by evil forces so i hope the International Community will continue to keep an eye on hong kong now still ahead on aljazeera a course in india and shells 3 men for a life over the rape and murder of an 8 year old a case that shocked the nation. Is annoying and she explains why not to all weapons bans are controlled by state laws. Anyone that owned the bum stock which basically is a device that allows you a rifle or your gun to be in essence turned into a machine gun they were banned in december of 2018 that was one of the things that donald trump did do in going against the National Rifle association so as of march of this year it was illegal to either buy or sell a bump stock so you know those are not controlled by state law is under federal law that has the ban with respect to those now under high ammunition. Stock thats a whole nother issue and that is controlled by states laws so there are 42 states that do allow for high ammunition cartridges and what that means is where the manufacturer has said that this particular gun this particular weapon only holds 8 rounds high ammunition cartridges allow for a greater amount of rounds and that is controlled by the states i always remain hopeful i mean i think in the Political Climate that we have in the United States right now in 2019 its quite doubtful if something is going to get done this year but theres always hope that something will happen because i think it goes without saying if we have less guns on the street will have less killings if we had 0 guns on the street which is not possible there would be 0 killing so any way or anything that we can do to reduce guns on the street does in effect save lives and thats the main thing that our politicians have to look towards saving lives under the 2nd amendment. Health care workers in venezuela demanding better pay and working conditions in Public Hospitals the country had one of the best Health Care Systems in south america just 25 years ago but u. S. Its astonishing the slide of the Health System in venezuela from a strong functioning Health System to a Health System thats in catastrophe basic items such as gloves intravenous medication intravenous kits and intravenous medications oral medications are no longer there and thats one of the reasons we have over 4000000. 00 people now who have fled the country and we believe much of the data we we reported on in april are is an underestimation but we were able to work with Pan American Health or look at the reports from pan american Health Organization centers for Disease Control we also have private conversations with physicians in venezuela and furthermore were able to get some data from the venezuelans that were crossing the border into colombia and brazil which were the 2 countries that we visited its clear that the venezuelan government is not releasing data and in fact is telling their Health Care Workers not to release data and we are aware of some Health Care Workers that have been detained and have lost their jobs by providing such data one of the recommendations in our report is to have an independent assessment and evaluation of the Health Care Situation in venezuela because right now we have some ideas the numbers that you have mentioned but as we said we really need an independent evaluation to understand the gravity which we believe is quite severe but also to come up with a a strong estimate of what is truly needed the u. Do go on a village thats about 50 kilometers away from mookie which is in the center of mali you know no one has claimed responsibility for this attack the 1000000 Security Forces are on the ground to try to secure the area to ensure that there are no more attacks in the air and try to apprehend those that may have been responsible for this it comes just months before there was another attack dog on fighters then attacking full lonny villagers and what seems to be really an increase of intercommunal violence between the semi nomadic herders group that are the philosophies the local doggone fighters each trying to vying for control of the land the full on these for their animals and the dog ran for agriculture in this is of course the increase of violence in mali it comes just days before the u. Along with other signatories are standing by the agreement after the u. S. Withdrew from the deal last year. Well u. S. President although trump is promising to reveal more details on last fridays agreement with mexico aimed at stemming the flow of Asylum Seekers across the border trying had threatened mexico with tariffs on less a deal was reached a lot of good things are happening but i want to thank mexico and we do have one other thing that will be announced at the appropriate time but they have to get approval from their legislative body what is it why are the mexicans denying it that i dont think theyll be denying it very well and its all down. Well lets speak to castro who is at the u. S. Border with mexico she is joining us live from el paso in texas heidi tell us more about the same in the secret of mexicos deal with the u. S. Do we know what this one other thing is. Secret is a great adjective for this no one because no one really knows what to believe because were getting mixed messages from the u. S. Side versus what mexico is say as you just heard from President Donald Trump he is referring to this as a secret. Immigration Security Agreement with mexico that was reached over these days of negotiation to ward off the bible is that terrorists have brightened today which would have been a deadline and hes not releasing any details just kind of devolved into that signature move of his which is building up anticipation saying Something Big and wonderful is coming down the road although we still dont know what that is or if it will pan out but if you ask mexico they have a very different version of things their countrys foreign minister marcello spoke with reporters this morning and said there really was no agreement he could did confirm that mexico was sending 6000 National Guard troops throughout the country to try to deter a Central American migrants from seceding north and that mexico has agreed to expand the program that allows Asylum Seekers to wait in mexico while their cases process in the United States but the big call there is both of those measures were agreed upon months ago by mexico there marcello the foreign minister of mexico again said that within 45. 00 days the u. S. And mexico will go back to the negotiation tables and see if those already existing stepped up enforcement measures in mexico are working and only if then if its determined that they are not preventing more people from crossing this border illegally at that point mexico may consider whats. Term a 3rd safe country agreement which would give the u. S. More Legal Authority to turn people away here at its southern border but that is a still to be had conversation that has not been signed or agreed upon contrary to what trump is spending which i mean that has been quite successfully been sold to american conservatives who say that his threats that trump aggressive measures are already yielding results. At the border what kind of activity and reaction have you been seeing from people that. Well it is no doubt that this border is under immense strain at the moment last month more than 130000 people were apprehended by u. S. Border patrol agents while trying to cross and that was a 13 year high in fact here not how so where i am now there was a group of more than a 1000 people who skirted the border fence behind me and turned themselves in as a group 2 Border Patrol that was the largest surrender of people in the history of Asylum Seekers coming to the u. S. Crossing this border and the u. S. Government says it is under great strain best warranty these extreme measures. At the u. S. Border with mexico in texas the speaking to us thank you for that update heidi while the u. S. President says hes open to the possibility of imposing feather tariffs on chinese imports donald trump is expected to meet chinese president xi jinping at the g. 20 summit in japan this month early and trump threatened to raise tariffs if he couldnt reach a deal with she at the summit hes also repeated his claim that the tariffs are good for the u. S. Economy. Right now were getting 25 percent or 250000000000. 00 worth of goods a lot of money is pouring into our treasury weve never gotten 0. 10 from china and that were getting a lot of money from china and i think thats one of the reasons that g. D. P. Was so high in the 1st quarter because of the tariffs that we take it in from china we always have the option to raise it another 300000000000 to 25 percent and the 25 percent to be much higher than 25 percent but roger penske said thats enough and the u. S. Says its gravely concerned about the erosion of hong kongs special legal status had follows mass protests over a bill facility facilitating extradition to Mainland China organizers say more than a 1000000 people took part another demonstration is planned for wednesday hong kongs chief executive is standing by the bill saying its simply because as a legal loophole. Well those are the headlines the news will continue here on aljazeera off to inside story to stay with us. It was the biggest protest since hong kong was handed back to china 22 years ago and many people are angry its an extradition bill that could see suspects tried on the mainland so what could this mean for the citys feature this is inside story it can get my. Hello and welcome to the program on the dennis the controversial plan has provoked a heated debate about the future of hong kong the government has proposed a new law which would allow the suspects in serious crimes to be sent to countries where theres no extradition agreement now this is led to the biggest protests since the semi autonomous territory was returned to chinese rule that was in 1997 organizers say a 1000000 people marched on sunday theyre worried that china could use the law to target political opponents and have them sent to the mainland for trial and they see it as yet another sign of beijing eroding the form of british colonies autonomy the citys chief executive is defending the bill though and wants paula meant to pass it by the end of the month. We were told we received feedback that these additional measures are effective in addressing the concerns of the stakeholders and we will continue to do something so there is no question of us ignoring views expressed in society but hong kong has to move on there are severe severe deficiencies and gaps in our existing system to deal with cross border crimes and transnational crimes. There is sort of a very difficult area to understand why hong kong cannot have any mutual Legal Assistance on criminal matters with our closest neighbors that is a Mainland China taiwan and the cup. Will bring in our guests in just a little while 1st though his the chinese Foreign Ministry had to say about this proposed law. Firstly the Central Government will continue to firmly support the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to push forward the amendments of the extradition bill secondly china strongly opposed to any external interventions in hong kong legislative affairs so as we mentioned earlier the u. K. Had it back control of hong kong to china 22 years ago with a special agreement called one country 2 systems china agreed to keep hong kongs economic and social systems in place and preserve its autonomy for a period of 50 years that would end in 2047 this means the people of hong kong continue to enjoy many rights and freedoms that are not so say the ball to those on the mainland and crucially the city retains its independent judicial system. Thank you all right lets introduce our panel now in hong kong we have claudia mode a legislator and prodemocracy activist in beijing we have it to gal Vice President of the center for china and globalization thats a think tank also in hong kong we have andrew long a businessman and Research Fellow at beijing normal University Welcome to you all claudia let me start with you weve just heard the words of kerry lamb the chief executive and which she said it makes sense doesnt it for hong kong to have some some arrangement an extradition arrangement with its nearest neighbors given that hong kong is go extradition arrangements with the likes of the United States with france with the United Kingdom doesnt it make sense. No it doesnt make sense carrie lamb is a liar i mean the whats the hurry away if in waiting for more than 20 years why is suddenly such a hurry it shows that she is a beijing puppet she is just doing what her beijing balls tells her to do now at 1st most people in hong kong would assume that this is all about taiwan they claim that we need to try to help taiwan murder case and the future to quote and unquote the suspect as in hong kong we need to be able to extradite him back to taiwan ok that was the original issue because a arrangements on the about the extradition back in 1907 when it excludes excludes china the rest of china and including taiwan so if taiwan a subset of this arrangement you would be having taiwan acknowledging that it is indeed part of china which is politically impossible so taiwan practically has told hong kong to get lost when it comes to this extradition can prophesy but this still pushing it ahead and its now very clear that hong kong is the ultimate target we dont have any confidence we dont have any trust in chinas. Rule of law rather than lack of it right right trust chinese judiciary or legal system right lets lets come to you then. Go out in beijing clearly firm from what weve been hearing from claudia theres no faith the tour in the chinese authorities particularly when it comes to. The judicial system can you wonder about it when youve got 2 canadians whos been arrested allegedly on on political politically motivated charges in order to hit canada for their arrest of a huawei executive so there are lots and lots of questions about the chinese judicial system. Well 1st of all the fact that there are demonstrations in hong kong speak to the fact that hong kong is a democracy people in hong kong have the right to protest and demonstrate they need to do that within the rule of law of cause secondly for china and hong kong one country 2 systems they are 2 different jurisdictions or god continues to practice what we call capitalism or democracy in the sense where as meaning china practice is socialism. With chinese characteristics they are more or less 2 different jurisdictions now for a tradition deal to be executed between or among different jurisdictions thats the rule farm in the world many countries or many regions have such an arrangement china have such execution arrangements in practice or theory with many countries and regions and also it is true that in the world today there are many criminal offenses which are happening across dungarees across different jurisdictions therefore Going Forward is specially in the internet age to have a tradition will become more and more common practice right ok for it will be surprising that male in china there is no actual issue around her right or it will be extradition arrangements sooner or later and the sooner the better or right lets go to Andrew Andrew youre a businessman and unusually for hong kong this protests which the organizers claim reached a 1000000 in terms of the participants it included didnt it members of the Legal Profession members of your sector the business sector as well so clearly more than just the usual suspects if you like were enraged by this proposed bill theres even a housewives petition i understand which is signed by thousands of housewives who are against this extradition bill what is the objection to it from the business lobby in particular. Well of course from the business. As far as the business sectors concerned the worry in the beginning was that a lot of his this meant have been operating in china. For a number of years and then of course there are certain kinds of practices which could be regarded as normal in china but actually could also be the cause for trumped up charges so i think that the Business Community has expressed the worry and hence that has led to amendments in the bill. First of all exempting certain crimes and also raising the threshold of kind of crimes qualifying for this extradition procedure raising it the bar as it were from something live for 3 Years Imprisonment to 7 Years Imprisonment and that has largely satisfied the Business Community but i think that the theres a widespread distrust in the community in hong kong of the rule of law in china and the worry is that you know if you commit a crime even people in minor crime or political crime if it can be not be regarded as a crime in on call and then there could be trumped up charges i think that this has got. Into the talk about it and then people like him its a hype up quite dramatically during the past couple of months and this has led into a widespread kind of worry concern if not anger but you would look at it as. Panda this point of al china has had is having Something Like i think 40 extradition treaties with 40 countries including a number of everyones countries like france spain portugal and indeed. Only about a week ago spain of course as an advanced country has handed over Something Like 95 chinese fugitives involving the new International Crime then in recent years quite a number of serious criminal fugitives who tears are hiding in hong kong right ok you make a good point and claudia let me put that to you given the Trans National now nature of much of modern day crime doesnt it just make sense isnt it logical and given the fact that countries like spain which has a high regard for human rights and human freedoms and theyve handed over suspects to china shouldnt hong kong follow in the path of spain or france. No no no thats a completely different picture when you talk about something between strums and china youre talking about something by electro nation to nation come on home kong is part of china china to soften country of hong kong if they want our bookseller you know we all know the hong kong bookseller story right if beijing wants that bookseller to go back you think kerry lamb would dare to say no or together and i never i also noted one thing our beijing speaker completely size stepped your question about. Chinese judiciary practices and things and my 2nd observation is about this. Envoy who wrote the business men talking saying that there are now are better safeguards now listen if you just look at how china has treated our nobel peace when a little shell bowl you tell me you still have confidence if china wants to snatch you from hong kong not from from or spain from hong kong you think you have a chance not to face extradition or together trumped up charges have been mentioned and they can package any crime against you theres no separation of powers in china and they say the judiciary would only serve the executive branch of the government so what the whatever happened to fair trial all even more importantly probably the humane treatment of suspects theres no such guarantees right thats the point isnt it victor really. That what were seeing in hong kong is the profound lack of trust in the authorities in china specifically when it comes to the treatment of prisoners of suspects in the whole system of the judiciary. Please allow me to make several very brief points now china like all the other countries or regions is not a perfect country or a Perfect Place there are always problems fortunately problems in china are being improved there are less problem today compared with 40 years ago thats number 2 and i believe tomorrow china will be better than today thats the megatrend now thirdly please allow me to oversize that demonstrations if they are conducted legally should be perfectly fine people if they have grievances go to the street or demonstrate its protected by the law in hong kong the question is whether the there are people who violate rule of law and demonstrate illegally thats the problem. Can i just interrupt and ask you to whatever interrupt and ask you then what about the case of the booksellers that claudia mentions i mean there is a fair theres fear among real palpable fear among many residents in hong kong because of cases like the booksellers who would disappeared mysteriously and then turned up on the mainland many weeks if not months later without any explanation as to how allow me take allow me to make allow me to make a very quick point if you look at Different Countries in the world there are always problems in china as a measure there are problems our task is to really identify the problem and get the problems resolved and improved rather than weaning a whiny bark at the wrong tree hong kong whatever it is is part of china and Mainland China does not need to do anything but to declare that by 2049 hong kong will no longer be a special minutes of region hong kong will be just one of the cities in china then whatever you are complaining about will be 2 out towards a very effectively 0 therefore the task is for people who hunger. To really wake up to the fact the hunger is part of china and lets Work Together to get the Problem Solved or unless im up with such a solution victor legless isnt going to happen lets go to hell here holder is addition will be a 100 a polluter is dying to ice on to you let lets hear what claudia has to say claudia. Now exactly exactly the point here. We are still free to protest and thats why more than 1000000 people took to the streets better do it while we still can thats the idea you would say you still openly a very publicly criticizing this and that and the other it tells you how free you are in hong kong or up to a point after the passage of this particular law people here would probably need to think what have you have to say what you do you need to think of repercussions and its the fear indeed test the fear fear is a trade they say thats how Insurance Business goes on runs right so but its china basically its china thats a trying to get this Chilling Effect and run the society just watch out big brother is watching you and you know how to behave we will new for the freedom of the world the freedom without fear right the freedom to just speak our minds right andrew hong kongs prosperity depends upon its reputation as being an International Financial hub doesnt it if the special status of hong kong is being seen as being undermined in what it comes to the rule of law as well as other areas of course surely that that is going to get a dent the the very fortune of hong kong the poem which its name and reputation is built. Well 1st of all ive got to make a point. I dont agree with my colleague in beijing that hong kong is better wake up to it by 2049 there were mumbai one country through a system but i think that we are nowhere near 2 1049. 00 and a whole process of as. A part of this region one country 2 systems but also along the point that. On the one country 2 systems lets not forget the one country because i think the part of the problems which have recent in recent years is that we only focus on provisions in the basic law guarding against hong kongs high degree of autonomy without forgetting without. Paying attention to those provisions which. The safeguards in beijing as regards of avoiding hong kong being turned into a base for subversion for example of the need to annex article 23 but i think that this protest is not about the rule of law in china is about how long can hold the fort against any kind of fear of trauma charges and i think here we have proper trusts are highly regarded judiciary dont forget our judges our life employment then they would not be subject to any kind of coercion and then over the years its just a load of very high reputation internationally and of course if you look at the bill there are where we are safeguards elaborate save guards if there is an extra extradition requests its got to go through the judiciary through due to the Justice Department so that they can assess the that the case and come back with a view on whether the. Extradition requests should be entertain and then eventually of course. The chief executives have got to look at all the factors and then all this has to be done in a transparent manner so. I think that at the end of the day the tests that are putting is in the eating are i repeat my 1st remark that all these concerns are legitimate or this worries are real but i think that the the whole government of things learn a big lesson in to the need to pay more attention to a whole to let make sure that the various provisions of any major change is brought to the attention of the public claudia you wanted to come in i. I completely disagree that the Hong Kong Government has learned a lesson if it has done one have behaved like the way kerry land. Today just at the pretending nothing much has happened and its now so obvious that they out of it go as to. As beijing friend was saying hong kong people need to wake up your part of china and the idea complete with our greater bay area grand plan is to disappear Hong Kong Hong kongs just one of the numerous chinese cities what are you getting so proud of yourself for thats the idea and shut down hong kong as a sense of. This i beg your pardon a haven of the scent all right lets also go to that is that how aging is that victor in beijing is that how beijing views hong kong as some sort of pesky far flung territory full of whining moon is. Well 1st of all clearly from chinas perspective hong kong cannot be a haven for fugitives without getting the just is they need dessert they need to deserve if the crimes the commit are involved in so sorry sorry to interrupt here and i think i think you have hunted i think our own our own friends secondly so i think theyll say that it is obviously they are largely a haven police a lot of the or irish ok allowing you to think is it allowed me to finish allow me to finish allow me to finish allow me to finish 2nd point 2nd point actual decision need to be worked out with due process thats why procedurally speaking we need to work very very hard to make sure any extradition cases need to be worked out with due process without violating the law in hong kong thats the key now 3rd point allow me to finish very quickly hong kong is part of china by 2049 hong kong will no longer have the special image of region status hong kong will be just like any ordinary cities in China Hong Kong compared with its neighboring city shouldnt turn shouldnt are now is already larger than hong kong in terms of the size of the g. D. P. In terms of the population people in hong kong need to wake up to the need that they really need to figure out whats the best way to promote the economy in hong kong purely chasing after certain goals will run not help Economic Development in hong kong will not help lifting the Living Standards of hong kong we really need to put development as the number one priority for the people in hama right victor thank you we are running out of time id like to give a clue here the last word basically in hong kong thats according to victor you better just like it or lump it because pretty soon its an illusion special status anyway. Why i think the comments from beijing obviously has to have been made on behalf of jill non high the system that off fish oh veal beijings veal indeed they want hong kong to disappear probably not just a by 2049 i was towed but thats another better novel thank you all very much indeed claudia in Hong Kong Victor gao in beijing and andrew learn also in hong kong thank you all very much indeed for a very interesting debate thank you so much and as ever thank you for watching the program you can see it again any time you like and go to the website aljazeera dot com should you want more discussion and im sure you will let us know what your thoughts are on our Facebook Page facebook dot com forward slash a j inside story theres also the conversation on twitter handle is at a. B. A. Championship well those are the headlines and do join me for more news here on aljazeera to rewind in america stay with us. I am. My. Let. Us. Let. Alone and welcome to rewind im Richelle Carey and the decade since we launched aljazeera english back in 2006 we have built a library of moving and powerful documentaries here army wine revisiting some of the best of them and looking at how the story has new dawn today we are rewinding 10 years to 2008 and rug omar set out on a unique journey across the United States to get to the heart of what it meant to be muslim in america and that was back in the decade of 911. 00 and the iraq war that followed since then of course the world has turned with the rise of isis the political upheavals that followed the arab spring the chaos of us and gulf 1st libya then syria and of course the election of donald trump and his travel ban so today its more important than ever to understand the history of a vibrant diverse and still growing Muslim Community and what it means to be both muslim and a patriot heres islam in america from 2008. Oh say. Cecil i would take your brother was that. It. Would. Have. You. Mention america and islam and most people think of irreconcilable conflict but i suspect thats not the whole story in this 2 part series i hope to discover the truth relationship thats evolving between the 2. There is said to be 8000000 muslims in the United States and the faith is said to be the Fastest Growing religion in this country and the roots and history of islam a longer than most people are aware of i want to travel across this huge country to find out the stories of what its like to be an american. In this program all the searching for the origins of islam in america talking to africanamericans who had just discovering that own islamic history and exploring is being american fits comfortably with being muslim. My journey begins with a trip to minneapolis in the midwest it may seem an old destination for a program on islam because its citizens are mostly jewish and christian but in 2007 voters here elected americas 1st muslim congressman Keith Ellison. Keith back on the campaign trail on a most significant anniversary today is juneteenth it commemorates june 19th 865. The abolition of slavery these are local political activists and theyre coming on the parade to get people in this community fired up about voting and at the halls of their efforts a young muslims playing their part trying to get congressman Keith Ellison the 1st muslim in congress reelected. Oh good spirit nice to see you Keith Ellison is a charismatic politician whos keen to get young muslim started in politics well you know were just having fun out here you know keith introduces me to his intent. Would you say just sort of young muslims living in other parts of the world think being a muslim in america is a very tough thing and such are i mean theres advantages theres disadvantages we definitely have a lot more opportunity is that its kind of difficult going up any different especially where im from existence and im the only muslim in my School Feeling the same in my high school so thats definitely a challenge but once you get past that you know you can theres so many different avenues so many different opportunities for you to connect with and what its like to be able to come in the United States get challenging and rewarding on the same time but i think the most important thing to remember that you only you know what we can make you know if we want and i encourage all muslims around the world to actually do the same you know please get to know you elected officials will it all thats the only way you can make a difference. And its going to get. You guys youre happy to see you know this is when the slaves got free right this is a great example of the american author of glad handing its the way to the electoral heart of the nation how candidates meet their votes is and has paid off for keefe here in minneapolis and its worked elsewhere now americans have elected to muslims to congress. All these historically been on the margins of American Society now come in you know when theres enough for. Everybody right now. For those muslims around the world in western countries who have no idea about the community here how would you say life is for muslims in america at the moment oh yes American Life you do hear about people getting hassled in airports you know theres a long way to go obsolete because impression i mean come from britain in terms of sheer muslims is a base level is hiding under their beds. Thats broadly speaking that muslim living is really the beast not only did i not only did i just get elected by an overwhelmingly Jewish Christian Community so did andre carson whos a muslim here in indiana so people need to not look for excuses to disengage you have to get involved you have to run the risk that you can encounter bumps in a long way but you still have to seen and heard yeah. Good things are certainly keith needed the votes of christians and jews to get elected but theres a community of 44000 somali muslims here the biggest in america they even have their own t. V. Network and they got behind chief. The somali t. V. Of minnesota and were so glad to have you today. Ok redlands focus to the muslim. Countries i think muslims in european countries. Believe that you know they joy the greatest freedoms in the muslim communities in the west are thriving most of all in europe and when they think about the position of muslims in america to be honest with you i think they think that the numbers are tiny before i caught the plane here actually i was with my mom and i said oh you as we send someone. How many muslims you think theyre on in the whole of the United States and she said 100150000 you know the whole United States in the whole United States but i mean as i understand there is anywhere between 5. 00 and 8. 00 men. I mean when you think about america as a land of opportunity and sort of seizing things with both hands maybe the sort of you know the next round of i could be so arrogant as to say that will come from here it is you. I have distant relatives in the Somali Community here they were among the 1st to escape the civil war thats been raging in my homeland off and on for decades 20 years on and the new wave of refugees has arrived from somalia some of Just Graduated College and the throwing a party to celebrate their achievements we came here to take advantage of the opportunities here at the same time to keep our identity as muslims were all going through the same experiences lets not forget our identity and lets give back to the Community Thanks i am a very blast person because. I get a little bit emotional. Weve been given so much you know weve learnt so much. Well you read the news its happening at home i have nothing to complain about. After that we need some laughs so i went to welcome i am doing. Thank you very much but the problem is that is beginning to lose me so mother i get better than me. Luckily hes a big shot making one me about a year who knows that i dont know how you do among them up to what you will notice at the height. Of the. My adopted home england has a bigger Somali Community the minneapolis and its been settled for longer but they do tend to think of england as home my parents a typical their mental bags are still packed to return to somalia but thats not true here these somalis are no less scarred all traumatized by their experiences of planted roots deeper and faster than any Somali Community ive seen in the world they dont talk of returning home they are ok. I suppose thats got it i want to. Tell you stuff and its a message that came across loud and clear and i was still hearing it in the taxi to the airport with. Some of you left out the step 2 years 13 years yeah and you came from the monist somalia. And i was born there having been there for a long time there was a lot of problems last 1517 years. In england we somalis you know were not that organized you know here in america you dont organize if you dont vote if you dont disobey the american way of living you lost. You know but thats the way to be visible thats the word to get heard yes can you be muslim and american up to yes do you have to sacrifice one to be the other. To be america 1st and you have to do what other americans decertify as a live to defending america because this is our country this is feel that you dont think about. My life defending this country. I get the welcoming i get. Thats a powerful thing compared to where i come from how we were how i was you know slaughter a friend of mine who died the war where we come to where i come from coming here. You know having what i have. Is home. Minnesota is a liberal state in the democratic heartland of the midwest a welcoming place for the somalis the latest black immigrants to establish themselves in america but in the early years of its history america was the very opposite of welcoming for the 1st africans to reach these shores. For 300 years africans were brought here in chains a slave labor im heading to jackson mississippi in the deep south to meet some of the descendants of those 1st africanamericans because it seems that their history lines at the heart of the story of islam in america. This impressive looking building is actually the state capital of mississippi and ill be honest ive come with my own really strong preconceptions about the south for me its about being in the hearts of the bible belt its about prejudice and the history of segregation but actually being told that the story of islam in america begins of all places here centuries before. And its a story that begins with slavery. Its. Starts here because most of the slaves shipped from africa came to work the plantations of the south among them when muslims. Forbidding from practicing their faith they found secret ways to keep islam on life calling the faithful to pray here in mississippi is abdul rashid he believes that one way they achieve this was through. The africans brought that was it here as slaves people said blues came from mississippi i dont think so ive been hearing about the link between the call to prayer and the songs that slayings used to sing in the fields all the similar the call to prayer a lot. If you ever went to a Baptist Church then you can hear this in a Baptist Church all of the baptists especially the southern baptist. This was a capella. Singing the whole congregation to sing you know i. Love. Yours and they called the entire koran which basically chanted yesus you know and it was chanted basically in that minor scale you see that connection to you and your singing things that had deeply embedded within the sort of africanamerican experience in the blues not only that but that was one of the things that. Guided me to islam really yes the music when you start reading when i was introduced to the koran and that was he founded there as well founded well. So i think from my opinion this is just why opinion and with my opinion about her and something you go to the coffee maker but this is my opinion that this entire movement is a Spiritual Movement and is geared toward islam. Like abdul more and more people of all ethnicities are finding their way to islam a 3rd of all muslims in america about 2000000 converts the people at the mosque in jackson convinced that this is having a positive impact on the entire nation oconnor was she is one of the founding members here today have you heard so much about it yet. And were just happy to have a caller who is involved in a new Research Project with 25 other historians they believe their discoveries will not only rewrite the history of islam in america but transform our understanding of african cultures i think were leading the way actually. As part of this initiative a cofounded the International Museum of muslim cultures the 1st in America Research here suggests the number of muslim slaves was much greater than previously thought one 3rd of all of them slave to africans that were brought to america actually were muslims nobody knows this is new cutting edge information because when we read our history books we dont see that we have one of the Great Stories here in mississippi in a place called natchez mississippi we have the story of our prince abdulrahman ybor he he was an african muslim prince and scholar came out of the area around gambia and he was actually slave to matches for over 40 years and we have that story but but youre a combination of all these things thats unique here to the to the deep south on she i mean africa american and muslim and why. Why is it important to stress i mean in this exhibit in your work this missing link of islam in this in this mix the most important reason is that its going to help the africanamerican to become a 1st class citizen am opposed to a 2nd class citizen and this whole standing up for rides fight for freedom leaving the whole effort in america for reforming america and bringing america to respect its own constitution all blending is really was thats what makes me optimistic about the future. This corner of the exhibition is really interesting because youve goals real evidence of this link between islam and slavery in mississippi and it brought him of the man who was known as the prince among slaves who was sold into slavery for 40 years before winning his freedom and going to live as a free man in liberia and i understand that there are his descendants still living in the United States and im going to try and find them. I now see that whats up the heart of the story of islam in america is the story of slavery and on this issue america was divided as early as the 17th seventys some americans were calling for the abolition of slavery one of these Thomas Jefferson proposed forming a colony in africa to take freed slaves but it wasnt until 863 after the civil war that slavery was finally abolished with it came the economic collapse of the Southern States which depended on slaves the big plantations fell to ruin and 2000000. 00 freed slaves headed for the northern cities. For those who stayed behind life remained brutal well into the 20th century lynching and murder where every day facts of life africanamericans across the south. African americans have been telling me that here in mississippi a place ive always associated with prejudice they can now be muslim without prejudice and that this is an essential part of being a muslim in america the fight against prejudice and the struggle to be free and it was in pursuit of this struggle that in the early part of the 20th century millions of africanamericans abandoned the south and they headed north which is where im going next. Im catching the night train to chicago following in the footsteps of millions of freed slaves to the city by the promise of jobs in the factories and stockyards. With the hope of living a life free from prejudice but they did have another option to sail from liberia the colony america established for free to slaves in africa. It was a stark choice scratchie living in americas ghettos will build a nation from scratch the muslim prince ibrahim of mississippi that a college told me about was among the 1st to sail from liberia where he dreamt of establishing islam but the early settlers encountered little bit disease and hardship and prince ibrahim barely saw the completion of the 1st settlement before he died. Martin liberia has suffered a succession of civil wars and feeling the last of these was abrahams great great great great grandson whos turned this story on its head he fled wall to liberia to find freedom in america his name is optimist game. That i want to civil war in liberia i came to this country and it was just a sheer says on earth and in my own countrys history that i spent hours in the library just trying to find out the history of just mississippi. And then i define oh yes there were ships there was a ship manifesto and all along the ship me out of great ground. His name was rock money he brought him sorry he was one of the sons of. Remodel who was and was a prince but also clearly by his name a muslim a muslim was very important to realize that. You on astute sons. Medicine and that for me was like winning the lottery on the rare amazing. Reverse here to come from africa. Here i have a gun from africa. Refuge enough for chicago as a place intellectual place for me is spiritual home for me in above all it has one of the largest collection of books in africa one norway in africa its right here in chicago how important was it that up to you relative was a muslim this country has to understand its roots especially when it comes to africanamerican is an islamic groups africanamerican show not just a religion it is a heritage and a good thing about it people respect each other here you know in the midst of all of this is diversity so thats something that youve got what has that. Chills what it means when people in. All busy merge. Artemus has a good point chicago is culturally very diverse and it has a large Muslim Community big enough to justify this celebration of arab culture its the 2nd year running the city celebrating its links with the middle east for those for whom the slaves who fled the south a little over 100 years ago the transformation of this city so would be unbelievable. Africanamericans came to chicago as parts of one of the largest human migrations of the 20th century they were leaving the segregated and racist south in search of a new life in what many hoped would be a Promised Land and it was out of this experience that was born the 1st american muslim movements and it was known as the nation of islam. In the 1930 s. A radical idea began to spread through the cities of america the idea that white people were irredeemably evil form the coolness stone of the nation of islam. These theology combined islam and black nationalism the nations message appeal to africanamericans who fled the bigotry of the south but the 1950 s. The nation had around 100000 members led by in large. Part. But out. There. Who would gave the nation some credibility were high profile members including the boxer caches clay who took the name. And the radical charismatic activist malcolm x. In the present situation dont know the political power they dont need that they can put the man in the white house so they can take the man out of the white house but in 1965 off the leaving the movement malcolm x. Was assassinated defection sued enough to enlarge a mamma died most of the membership converted to mainstream islam. Im on a bit of a pilgrimage south of chicago to meet a man whos had a profound effect on the story of islam in america hes the son of god but he led the largest single conversion to mainstream islam that america has ever seen. Lives modestly here in chicago he became the head of the nation of islam when his father in law John Muhammad died in 1975 wallenstein persuaded most of the nation to adopt mainstream islam and he changed the nations name to the World Community of islam in the west it was some very startling. Origin of islam and to tell us about some of the it was a myth mr destroy we had a myth the origins of the white race as grafted there were the black man you know as money and the blood and blood people were gods and the whites were devils is exactly. Exactly but what made you break with the nation of islam that it didnt it didnt take nothing but a childs brain for me to do that i was about 11 or 12 when i was that that was wrong then you became a sunni muslim well i dont make a big deal about sunni and shia you know when i became a mainstream muslim you became a mainstream muslim areas and the really the importance of it how it would affect not only muslims but christians sue. Was not realized ballasts in 1905 and what way it was an important turning that means a lack of national this movement as extreme as ours believing what we believe in the race issue could make a 180 degree turn and join the muslims of the world good christians and of the good people of this earth is amazing but when you look from the middle east to europe thinking of america as a bad place to be a muslim its like living in the belly of the beast i have heard that how would you say that life is like for people well we know things that happened to make america peer ugly in the eyes of citizens of this country and that there is a world that if we can see america the beautiful that has advanced that against america the ugly successfully. Then im sure that we would recognize that americas the most fertile soil we have for ecstatic religion in our future for our children grandchildren and children to come and then my journey across america if i want to find america the beautiful. Where will i find that kind of things should i look for the concept of citizenry how citizenry is that race. In the constitution the United States based upon the equality of man and i feel very strongly that the Founding Fathers envisioned. A world that would welcome muslims and others from across the waters not only christians. There seems to be an incredible transformation only 30 years ago chicago was the most racially divided city in america it had a White Supremacist Movement and a black separatist movement it saw some of the worst racial violence in the entire country im amazed what im hearing from people like optimising wallerstein and it seems chicago is becoming much more at ease with its own diverse population its a rich city where life is improving on many fronts better Public Education karma Race Relations and overall the Crime Statistics show a big improvement. But there is still a dark side to the city because even though the city has cracked down and arrested gang leaders Gang Violence is getting worse ive been here for 3 days and 9 people have been killed in gang warfare. Islam has made huge gains in chicago which is home to the largest number of africanamerican muslims in the u. S. 30 years ago they had only one mosque today they have more than 40 to choose from now islam has a new battle to win trying to loosen the hold the gangs have on chicagos south side this. Year im heading to the south side to visit the citys 1st Halfway House for muslim x. Prisoners its aim is to provide an alternative to life in the gangs the man who runs this project has served 12 years for murder like many x. Offenders he converted to islam in prison his name is. Rafi peterson. We used to go in the Cook County Jail division 11 which is in the like maximum security and then. We things so many brothers we did there for like 6 years and then we seen so many brothers coming home and going right back right we realize that we needed so attention to food and most being must have been very hard for a lot of youve known as if you come back and youve got to make money youve got to make ends meet not only that remember a lot of brothers that convert to islam and institutions. They would rather than the institutions so we know that you have to have an environment here for the brothers to get a foothold when they get out and so we want to National Housing service said look my. Gosh and how is this. Can we get one right and he said i know a good you can have what we have and a lot of. You know we can do a little bad way when you 1st saw this was goofy everywhere and here this is again the gang house it was boarded up you know and the neighbors and stuff with afraid to say and thinking what are you to call the police on these guys the neighborhood is feeling the benefits of this project but thats no rule its having a positive impact on new still in prison. And you know to see more more i mean africanamericans coming to islam i mean especially in in prison. They already have it in the south they need somebody to bring it out. So fast they see it and they might. Like that you know. This whole free house is a calm sensor in a neighborhood torn up by gun violence and rafi is not content to let murder and mayhem thrive on his doorstep. Right here in this valley right where are. You going to drop a brother right here and they shot him in the. This is a very you have the. Book and pastor there. Up this street here. Chasing 88000 young people between the ages of 8 to 25 in this general area that we live in west a lot of its not teasing them down the street dont want to go down there specially to come in the car this morning his own sound if you look down the street to street look like a ghost see on the. Same thing down this way. Having you drop in fast and also to kill him 63rd i want to take you up 63 i mean youre living right now also so you know a lot of people they you know they know a lot of the brothers and even a lot of the brothers and. They dont like what im doing but they know do with i got to do it weeks ago they killed the brother that i get the best the store that they broke in on the corner they shot that place up the one thing that they did when they locked up all the real gang chiefs in chicago they destabilize all of the gangs now theres no one individual who can come to me like you used to back in the day as a man they got control of the whole you know theres a madison vibe or me they gotta do what they gotta do this obama album. Not you know could i understand what that thing is that you want to turn people away you got to turn into a song. And of course what rafi is trying to tie in this neighborhood towards is islam. What do you think rafi here in chicago would do you think islam is place in america i mean is it a growing one as you go to a Healthy Future or not i think that islam can be the cure to america ills if its openly aseptic islamic cannot down barriers because we as muslim we spoke to be the best for humanity and i think islam in america has an opportunity to really teach in soul that thats what we are and that we can be. I have to admit ive come to america with my own prejudices and misconceptions i thought that being muslim in america was a story of widespread fear discrimination and stereotyping but in the short time ive been here what im hearing from muslims is about opportunity Constitutional Rights and due process about having a stake in this country and being made to feel that they belong and as i travel across america what i want to find out is whether these ideas define not only what it means to be a muslim in america what it actually means to be an american muslim. And im getting the message that a great deal of what it means to be an american muslim is understanding your Constitutional Rights and how you go about being a good citizen and its in washington the Nations Capital where im hoping to learn about citizenship the law of the land and the influence of islam in fact in something that would come as a huge surprise to most of us amongst the Founding Fathers one of the greatest Thomas Jefferson had his own koran in full knowledge and of islams contribution to world civilization and one of the most famous monuments in the American Capital over there is dedicated to him. A big part of the legacy of Thomas Jefferson in the Founding Fathers is freedom of expression it means a lot to americans including american muslims one of the most radical ways you can indulge this freedom is on stage through comedy. I mean washington d. C. About to get a lesson in free speech at a Comedy Club Show you love the routine nicholas bergs generation pakistani muslim woman she just won and the good life one whose mom in America Nicholas won a National Talent competition and became an overnight star my parents lied when they came to this country they told everyone they were pakistani muslim immigrants so that i wouldnt have to grow up with the stigma of being known as hawaiian. I. Think this is my mom that one nation of easter to me and my sisters 2 story. Oh east. Christ will come back from the dead. And he will give all of the good days in the night. You know i mean. I make stitch. On the east. Jesus christ will come out of the gate. And if he does not see his shadow. I. Will be 6 more weeks of chile i. Think youre getting ready to listen. To this in the. End theres always a mixed bag of reaction and i mean there are some that really feel as though they thought it was imminent. You know there are those you know and there are others who just sort of take it in stride and what do you think i mean when you when you say you but you know you know what your heritage is in some ways comedy is a way to disown people up down. A little easier for people to handle some of the muslim terrorist take the jokes when youre made you know like i need to see you know i get totally different then you know a guy with a big beard in appears to look at a woman is it made sort of all the comics suddenly jump in there as well one thing to sort of talk about iraq you know yeah they were mixed as a whole tend to be a little more political and. And you have jumped into the mix in terms of taking liberties with making fun. Of me a sonic religion a little bit more than in the past opening up the conversation putting a stereotype on the table that was a mess and so way to break it down for you. I mean when i do 3rd of the federal typing i tell a cab driver job like that and then my mom calling in to him you should get people about the contributions that american muslims have made to this economy we have the most educated weve got the high class be both really good. Parts of rubys act is offending people and shes very good is it if she wants to say that jesus gives chocolate to children she can but the principles that underpin this freedom go way beyond providing material for comedians they provide the basis for the nor of this land and guarantee freedoms than a carved in stone. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press all the rights of people to peaceably assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances when people talk about the fundamental freedoms in shrines in the american constitution this is what theyre talking about the 1st amendment and its the reason why so Many American muslims have been talking to me about the american constitution because it is they are free to practice their religion as muslims and they are free to speak their mind unlike so many muslims in muslim countries around the world and if anybody tries to oppress them in this country they can seek justice from the American Government the fundamental freedoms guaranteed under islamic law and not far from these american ideals and thats amazing when you realize the koran predates the constitution by a 1000 years and there is evidence in washington that suggests america knows its indebted to islam for its own citizens inalienable rights to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This is the Supreme Court in washington now we cant get into film because theyre actually in session but what i wanted to show you is a free means which is in the room where the chief justice is actually sits and dispense justice. This frees pays homage to the ideas and principles that have inspired the american legal system and one of the foundation documents represented in this freeze is the koran. And in the Nations Capital there are a few other references to islam largely unknown rarely seen the Thomas Jefferson building contains the library of congress the oldest Cultural Institution in washington which was completed in the 19th century around the dome of the reading room is a mural meant to represent the nations and ideas that contributed most to American Civilization and it might come as a surprise to historians that amongst the ideas represented here is islam. Beneath this great meeting congressman Keith Ellison who i came across at the start of my journey in minneapolis so he told me about when you took your oath of office because it was a copy of the koran and not just any copy but in fact was on this quran that we have right here before us and you know in fact this on which is a 2 volumes it has the initials t. J. Inscribed right here Thomas Jefferson and so you know we said this was your reaction when you find them one of the Founding Fathers had his own copy of the koran was gobsmacked. As we. Head it was international. I didnt have much appreciation for why it would be a big deal that a muslim of the elect of the United States congress i thought the issue was going to be color. And i thought wow weve really made some Great Strides in terms of Racial Justice when people dont care that im black anymore theyre just theyre just exudes or dark about religion but do you think keith that for all the grassroots activism in the Muslim Community that at a National Level the fact is that most americans are still afraid of islam americans i think are subject to fear just like any people in the world but i think this is deeply rooted tolerance in people and weve been through a moment a Civil Rights Movement weve been through all kinds of social change movements all marching the country toward a greater level of equality and i think people are just not ready to try to cut anybody out of a deal but the fact is in the european context its what it means to be a brit or a norwegians fairly tightly defined they would look like you are in what it means to be. Yours your certain colors certain cultures certain faith yes but in america cultures all colors our face even the most conservative american does not question my authenticity as an american you know we oppose social orthodox i mean hierarchies and economic iraqis were not saying we have social justice have been here we dont but but the fact is we dont question our authenticity as americans. On this journey ive met muslims whove made me rethink my prejudices about america muslims here realize something the rest of the world and possibly other americans have forgotten this country was born out of a revolutionary moment settlers 1st came here for religious persecution they overthrew a colonial monarchy they based their constitution on the ideals of the french revolution and radical thinkers like Tom Paine John Locke and yes the prophet mohammed. But theres a much more recent moment in American History that has come to define americas relationship with islam. They. Got over her. Thinking about americas relationship with islam like everybody else im joined immediately to one city and one moment and the events of september the 11th 2001 in new york city changed that relationship between america and islam forever. And it must also have had an impact on american muslims mohammed was with the new York City Fire department on 911 will muslims like me then you know who died and some that died definitely muslims died there you know trying to help. James yee was the armys Muslim Chaplain at guantanamo prison. I was being accused of espionage spying and aiding the enemy now these are capital crimes for in which military prosecutors even threaten me with the Death Penalty. There are distinct. Forever. And it must also have had an impact on american muslims for mohamed was with the new York City Fire department on 911 will muslims like me then you know who died and some that died definitely muslims died there you know trying to help. James yee was the armys Muslim Chaplain at guantanamo prison. I was being accused of espionage spying and aiding the enemy now these are capital crimes in which military prosecutors. Even threaten me with the Death Penalty. There are distinct as return to american soil and President Trump has introduced a travel ban which seems to many to target muslims so 10 years on what is the position of islam in america its a reality the political analysts who lives and works in the United States and she joins us now rula thank you very much so you moved to the u. S. In 2009 during that time what as a muslim what have you seen that has changed for muslims in america and i realize its a broad question that what are the things that stick out to you well out of things changed we see a major shifts in islamophobia and attacks against muslims in 20152016 its not a coincidence that the f. B. I. Report about hate crimes islam will fulbeck hate crimes in america skyrocketed in those years by far much more than in 2001 after 911 i just want to remind you that immediately after the election President Trump banned 6 countries 6 muslim countries and it looked like a persecution religious based persecution of one group based on the actions of individuals that are carried in pakistan maybe afghanistan iraq and elsewhere he went on attacking the 1st muslim mayor subject on immediately in the aftermath of a terrorist attack in london singling him out he didnt attack the mayor of barcelona after the attack or the mayor for any other city but he single outside the car because his muslim and his brown this is the platform. On which he campaigned and his governing now so where are the voices of people that would traditionally be allies to push back again. This type of dangerous rhetoric that sometimes also crosses over into violence where are those voices i mean there are breyer voices we have some. Muslim voices in america whether they are intellectuals like razor. And others but 3 day we are in minority we are underrepresented in the political arena and in the media i mean i am the only one that gets invited invited to c. N. N. And im b. C. M. To others to explain why this rhetoric is so dangerous and it was it was used before remember europe in the thirtys when you go through the Holocaust Museum its clear if thouse you and its written in the wall the holocaust did not start with the killing it started with words with violent words it started with politicians dividing people with them versus us it started with demonizing an entire group of people and criminalizing them and then that pave the way for the killing and for the gas gas chambers remember president bush after 911. 00 pushed this narrative of them versus us either you are with us or them that means if you challenge his views or his policies and decision then you are a terrorist and your label as a terrorist and many liberals jumped on that vaga. Just want to remind you that president obama and he was elected the 1st accusation the birth or movement that led and paved the way for trump to win the election what was he accused off of being a secret muslim that he is a crypto muslim and america is fighting a monster today that is called the country off White Supremacy is basically the pure race and in the name of the pure race every minority is an enemy and that will be the final word rula jebreal thank you so much for joining us thank you for having me. That is it from us join us again next week and check the rewind page its al jazeera dot com for more films from this series and Purcell Carrie thank you for joining us. True confessions of a big. Hello in case you saw reports of the storm that downed a crane in dallas that was the storm it came down from the north cold air behind it developed with the tropical air came out from the gulf of mexico and gave some pretty Stormy Weather throughout texas now the forecast is for those to more or less dissipate about squiers a day on tuesday anywhere from the mexican coast almost to the atlantic as you say when the rain left over in southern georgia and the Florida Panhandle thats been falling quite nastily for 2 or 3 days a whole frontal system running up towards eastern candor again is going to be like this during daytime on tuesday but the the night of course will be a wet when there are things moving the slow direction to the west remarkably warm and has been on the coast in San Francisco reports of 25 degrees in forecast 25 inland central valleys but out to around the 30 mark is near record vote is a slight cooling trend nothing by wednesday and quiet weather all the way have to the midwest where once again youve got these killer green which suggests Stormy Weather developing including in the apis and chicago in the caribbean still a lot of cloud around a few light showers the most part heaviest showers the cuba jamaica and increasingly what amala and mexico. 0.
