A Florida sheriff's deputy was killed by a suspect the week he was set to retire
The crash happened on Monday afternoon.
(CNN)A Florida sheriff's deputy who was just one shift away from retirement was killed Monday by a suspect in a fatal car crash, Hillsboro County Sheriff Chad Chronister said during a press conference.
Hillsboro County Sheriff's Office (HSCO) Master Corporal Brian LaVigne, 54, was in a marked vehicle when a suspect who had been tased unsuccessfully by deputies intentionally rammed the car, according to a press release from HCSO.
We will "honor him as the hero and for the service he left behind -- as a teacher, as a mentor and again, someone who unselfishly served this community," Chronister said.
