A canoe livery has operated on the Platte River for five decades. Now the government wants them to pay.

Riverside Canoes has operated on the banks of the Platte River in northern Michigan since the early 1970s. Last year, the National Park Service told the owners that they would need a commercial use authorization to continue operating. As part of it, they'd need to give the government between 3 and 5 percent of their gross receipts.
