Detailed description is Prospect Heights High School was built in 1920 and it was originally named 'The Girls Commercial High School' and located in the Crown Heights section.
While, 'The Girls Commercial School HS' name was later changed to Prospect Height HS possible due to it location of the Prospect Height neighborhood.
The schoold interior was designed to accommodate 50 classrooms and offices as well as several laboratories, swimming pool, cafeteria, 1500-seat auditorium, one large and two small gymnasium as well as a roof top playground in which I was not aware of.
At some point the school became coeducational and after several years began to suffer a decline and failing academically.
This led to the school officially being closed after the June 2006 graduation.
Some of the reason stated for the official closure was overcrowding as well as low academic rating received by the NYC Board of Education.
The school was surrounded by a rise in gang activities in the 80's which spilled into the school which cause major devastation.
Prospect Heights HS was then ranked by NYC Board of Education in 1990 as the 12th most violent high school out of 125 New York High Schools.
This led to the Scool being used by public advocated for the installation of metal detectors in the school.
The Prospect Heights former school now house four smaller schools which are very diversified: The Brooklyn School for Music and Theatre, High School for Global Citizenship, International High School at Prospect Heights and the Academy for Science and the Environment.
Due to the high presence of police presence in the neighborhood the violence has declined.
