There has been a public library in Excelsior Springs since 1909, when the first Excelsior Springs Library was established at 244 East Broadway Street by the Excelsior Springs Civic Improvement Association.
The library was located on the second floor of the building above the city restrooms.
In 1913, the Carnegie Corporation of New York awarded Excelsior Springs a $10,000 grant for the construction of a new library, which opened at 339 East Broadway Street in 1916.
The Excelsior Springs Library was still located in this Carnegie library building in 1968 when it joined the Mid-Continent Public Library system as its Excelsior Springs Branch.
In 1973, the Excelsior Springs Branch moved from downtown Excelsior Springs to a new location in the Crown Hill Shopping Center at 135 Crown Hill Road on the west end of town.
In 1986, the Excelsior Springs Branch moved again, this time just a couple of blocks to its current location at 1460 Kearney Road (Missouri Highway 10)..
