My name is Kim Johnson and I’m excited to share with you a new program that the Cherish Center will be offering called “Glimmer of Light”. . . On December 11, 2014, my husband and I lost our daughter Gabriella Grace when I was 24 weeks pregnant. The pain and sadness we felt at this time was extreme and nothing could have prepared us for the grief journey we were forced to experience. . . I remember leaving the hospital after we lost Gabriella with a feeling of dread and despair. I didn’t know how to live life without my daughter and my heart hurt knowing that nothing would ever be the same. Life felt differently and I didn’t like it. I felt alone and surrounded by darkness despite having family and friends surrounding me. It felt as though no one understood my pain and that made me feel isolated in my grief. . . After being home a few weeks, I was contacted by a woman in the community who wanted to come and speak with me. She shared with me her own story of losing an infant ten years ago. She told me about the pain she felt and how the grief never truly ends-yet changes as the years go by. Hearing her story gave me a little hope; a glimmer of light in my darkness. She endured the pain of losing a baby, and yet she was able to move forward with her life. She chose to live a life that would honor her baby and make him proud. After that meeting, other moms in the community came and spoke with me at different times; sharing with me their stories of loss and giving me more hope for my future. It helped to know that I wasn’t alone. These women had lost infants and yet had found their way out of the darkness to move forward in life. . . It is my hope that the Glimmer of Light program will provide mothers of infant loss (whether from miscarriage, stillbirth, SIDS, birth defects, or other neonatal illnesses) a support system. This will be a support system filled with women of all different ages who have lost a baby at some point in their lives. This group of women will help one another through the dark times by listening and by also sharing stories of hope.. . Another aspect of the Glimmer of Light program is to provide Glimmer Boxes for mothers in the hospital after losing a baby. These boxes are filled with items to help the mother heal in a physical and an emotional way. Through these boxes, the mothers will feel supported and will know that this program is here to help them through their grief. . . The Glimmer of Light program also provides education for the community so that infant loss isn’t seen as a taboo topic. It is important for us to share our stories and feel supported by our loved ones. Through teaching the community about infant loss and the grieving process, women who have lost a baby will feel less alone. . . When you are in the dark times of life, it’s hard to find hope. But with the proper support and love, you may just find a glimmer of light in the darkness that will give you the courage to move forward and live life once again. This is the purpose of the Glimmer of Light program. . .
