Communities In Schools of Burke County, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization created in 1991 and is supported by a combination of federal, state and local public funds and other local private, corporate and individual contributions. It is governed by a 15 member Board of Directors which includes leaders of the school district, the local business community, social service and youth serving agencies, the faith community, law enforcement and post-secondary educational institutions.. . CIS is dedicated to removing barriers to education for at-risk youth. Targeted objectives include: increasing academic standing and test scores, increasing the graduation rate, reducing the absenteeism and suspension rates of students at risk of failing. CIS of Burke County is also committed to providing youth with positive and creative outlets to build self-esteem, self-image, and to become good citizens. . .
