That s no sheep! Bear captured running along road in northern Japan
April 5, 2021 (Mainichi Japan) NEMURO, Hokkaido A man driving along a road in Japan s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido encountered a rare sight recently when a bear suddenly started running ahead of the vehicle a scene captured on video by a passenger. The incident occurred on National Route 44 in the town of Hamanaka in eastern Hokkaido, at around 9 p.m. on March 2. The driver spotted something bulky on the road and at first thought it was a large sheep. After he realized it was a bear, he asked a female passenger to record it with a smartphone.

In Japan and the mayor for the port city of Tomakomai has reportedly declared that he is ‘very disappointed’ with a decision from the government of Hokkaido Prefecture to continue eschewing the chance to secure an integrated casino resort license.
According to a report from Inside Asian Gaming, Hirofumi Iwakura serves as the mayor for the community of some 174,000 people and made the statement following a Monday meeting with the Governor for Hokkaido Prefecture, Naomichi Suzuki (pictured). The source detailed that this gathering was held following a November of 2019 decision from the leaders of Japan’s northernmost prefecture that pulled the jurisdiction out of the race for the right to host one of the nation’s coming trio of Las Vegas-style developments.
New regulations aim to protect the legacy of Japanese whisky

This week, in a landmark move, Japanese whisky producers took the first steps to safeguard the future of their spirit. Introducing new regulations to help strengthen the provenance of Japanese whisky, it comes amidst a rising tide of ‘fakes’ being mis-sold to unwitting consumers around the world – and will protect the reputation and legacy of the country s industry.
The regulations, issued by the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA) have been agreed by all members, including both the major players, Suntory and Ashai Breweries (the parent company of Nikka Whiskies), and effectively define the term ‘Japanese whisky’, its production, bottling and labelling, acting as a firewall between those which are authentic and those pretending to be Japanese – in a business which, over the past decade, has become a grey and largely unregulated area.

Despite the distinct chill in the air, and masses of snow covering some of Japan’s coldest areas, spring is actually just around the corner, and that means it’s time to start making plans for the sakura cherry blossom season.
Helping out in that regard is Japanese weather forecasting company Weathernews, who just released its first cherry blossom forecast for 2021. And according to their predictions, it’s going to be another warm start to the season, meaning the sakura will be unfurling their petals earlier than usual in Tokyo this year.
