If you’re an immigrant to the United States at the turn of the 20th century and you want a name change that conveys success, what do you choose? For Henrietta Kanengeiser, it had to be Carnegie.
That was just the beginning for this formidable young woman now known as Hattie Carnegie. Through talent and hard work, she grew one small shop into a fashion design powerhouse that included jewelry to accompany her clothing. Today her work is revered among vintage jewelry and fashion enthusiasts alike.

Midshipman 1st Class Sydney Barber, a graduate of Lake Forest High School, was named the first Black woman to serve as brigade commander at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. She stepped into the semesterlong role in January.

Maria Aline Griffith’s life is the stuff of movies. She was a well-educated and striking fashion model from New York. During World War II she was recruited by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and sent to neutral Spain, a country rife with Nazi sympathizers and spies. Her mission was to gather as much information as possible to aid in the Allied invasion of France.
After the war, she married a Spanish count and became a member of the Spanish “jet-set.” Her friends included leaders of state and first ladies, industrialists, millionaires, and movie stars. Later, she did contract work for the CIA and wrote several books, some of which recounting her career in espionage. She died in 2017 at the age of 94.

Despite her megastardom, Marilyn Monroe didnât sweep award seasons during her Old Hollywood heyday. In fact, the 1962 Golden Globe awards is one of the few occasions that the actor ever received an award for her talents. That year, Monroe won the Henrietta Award for World Film Favorite Female (prior to that, she had also won two other Golden Globes). Naturally, she rose to the occasion in her signature, bombshell style, wearing a gown that deserves to be remembered.Â
Monroe hit the stage in a fitted, V-neck sequined dress by one of fashionâs most slept-on designers, Norman Norell. (Fans have also speculated that the diamond earrings Monroe wore that night were also gifted to her by Frank Sinatra.) In a deep emerald green, the gown Norell designed for Monroe still looks surprisingly fresh and current today: any A-list star could slip into it for an awards show this year, and nobody would ever suspect tha
