Roof collapses in second fire in 2 days at Issaquah restaurant

A fire ripped through The Egg & Us restaurant in Issaquah Wednesday morning. 
Eastside Fire and Rescue responded to reports of flames at the restaurant in Gilman Village about 3:45 a.m., according to a fire department spokesperson.
The roof collapsed, and crews had to take a defensive position, according to the fire department. Crews stayed on scene until 4 p.m. monitoring hotspots and are expected to keep an eye on it overnight.
No injuries were reported. 
Hoa Tran, who owns the restaurant, said he could not believe the news Wednesday morning.  ....

Restaurants hurt by the snap ‘circuit-breaker’ lockdown over five days in February are being offered up to $3000 in State relief.
With just hours notice, businesses were ordered to shut at midnight on Friday 12 Feburary in response to a cluster of Covid infections linked to the Holiday Inn hotel quarantine cluster.
Eateries were forced to throw out food and close their doors ahead of the traditionally boom weekend of Valentines Day and Lunar New Year celebrations.
Springvale restaurant owner Andy Dang, who had a tonne of noodles, stocks and other foods go to waste, said the grants were small compensation. ....

Springvale restaurant owner Andy Dang had been prepared for a bumper Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day weekend.
Then with a few hours’ notice, a five-day snap Covid lockdown stranded his Hoa Tran restaurant with a tonne of noodles but no one to feed.
His tables closed from midnight Friday 12 February, a full list of bookings were cancelled.
Days of preparing pots of stocks, ordering foods for the weekend came to nought.
“We ordered so much stuff. Everything is thrown away,” Mr Dang said.
“It was so unexpected, so fast and so quick.”
Despite the annual Springvale Lunar New Year festival already being cancelled, the weekend’s celebrations had been hoped to help businesses recover some of 2020’s heavy losses. ....

This time last year Chinese restaurants were deserted. Melburnians curtailed their activities fearful of the approaching pandemic and things went downhill from there.
A year on, we re eating on street-side tables and in sunny parklets. Yum cha is back, the spark of Chinatown is starting to flare.
