The Howard Payne Lady Jackets snapped an 11-game skid with a 6-5 victory over Concordia Saturday in the final contest of an American Southwest Conference three-game series.
Concordia got on the board first, but Howard Payne answered, scoring Tori Muro on a throwing error by the first baseman to make the score 1-1.
The Lady Jackets had a huge third inning. Alexis Sullivan hit an RBI single through the right side to score Aurora Luera. Tori Muro batted next, reaching on a fielder’s choice to plate Kylie Persons. Deandra Longoria grounded out, allowing Alexis Sulivan to come home, giving the lady jackets a 4-1 lead.

[File photo by Mike Jones]ABILENE – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets rebounded from a 7-0 loss to St. Thomas earlier Friday with a 9-0 thrashing of Centenary Friday in non-conference softball action at Hardin-Simmons University’s Ellis Field.
In the win over Centenary, the Lady Jackets (9-4) struck for seven runs in the fourth inning, ending a 10-inning scoreless drought for the day. Howard Payne also tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Zaleigh Perez, Alyssa Corpus, Brianna Lopez and Kiley Persons accounted for two hits apiece, while Kayla Hill, Tori Muro, Aurora Luera, Alexis Sullivan and Deandra Longoria contributed one each. Hill drove in two runs with a homer, while Corpus and Luera also finished with two RBIs. Persons drove in a run as well.

ABILENE – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets softball team improved to 8-3 on the season with a 12-3 victory over St. Thomas Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Hardin-Simmons University’s Ellis Field.
Tied at 3 through five innings, the Lady Jackets put six runs on the board in the top of the sixth and added three insurance runs in the seventh to pull away for a comfortable win.
Howard Payne collected 11 hits and drew five walks en route to the victory. Offensive standouts included Alexis Sullivan with two hit and four RBIs; Kayla Hill and Tori Muro with two hits and one RBI apiece; Kiley Persons with a hit and two RBIs; Ragen Noriega and Zaleigh Perez with one hit and one RBI each; Deandra Lopez and Brianna Perez also picked up hits; and Aurora Luera drove in a run.

On a night where the Howard Payne Lady Jackets seemed a step or two off in all aspects of their game, the season came to an end as the Sul Ross Lady Lobos captured a 75-65 victory in the quarterfinals of the American Southwest Conference Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament Wednesday at the Brownwood Coliseum.
The victory is the first for Sul Ross (10-13), the third seed from the West Division, in the ASC tournament in just their second appearance. Despite the loss and a chance to host the rest of the ASC tournament, Howard Payne (10-7) still owns the most wins in the history of the tournament with 22.
