WEYMOUTH town council is putting together a bid to stop the town being divided under planned changes to parliamentary constituency boundaries. As reported, the Boundary Commission for England (BCE) is proposing a major overhaul of constituencies in England which would see Upwey and Broadwey, and the new Littlemoor urban extension, reclassified as part of West Dorset. Currently they are part of the South Dorset constituency. Meanwhile, it is also proposed that neighbouring Chickerell, part of West Dorset, would be joined into South Dorset. NO Change at the top for Dorset Council – the council’s senior roles are all to stay the same for another year. The council’s annual meeting, held on Tuesday evening, voted the entire Conservative Cabinet back in – together with chair Val Pothecary and council vice chair Mike Parkes. Cllr Spencer Flower, who has been council leader since May 2019 when the unitary council came into being, said he remained committed to his first year election pledge to be bold and ambitious and to gain the benefits from combining previous councils into one. He praised staff and councillors who he said had done a ‘fantastic job’ to support the county through what he described as the unprecedented times of Covid. ....

The current lowest pay level is around £17,800 a year, roughly nine times less than the annual salary of chief executive Matt Prosser. The council’s 4,512 staff are not expected to get an annual pay increase this year. Lib Dem leader Nick Ireland asked this week’s full council meeting to start the process of paying what is known as a ‘real living wage’ to its lowest paid staff, defined by the Living Wage Foundation. ....

Rough sleepers are being put in b&bs. Inset, top, Cllr Jon Orrell, and Cllr Graham Carr-Jones More than 90 homeless people are being put up in B&Bs by Dorset Council – many as a direct result of the pandemic. The council says it is now working on finding more in-house accommodation, including for around 35 rough sleepers – although they will be spread across the county, rather than be concentrated on Weymouth, as happened during the spring lockdown. Housing brief holder Cllr Graham Carr-Jones says lessons were learned from the last time when security staff had to be used to keep the peace after repeated problems in and around Weymouth seafront and Park District. ....
