The UK will no longer use coal to generate electricity from October 2024 as part of moves to cut climate emissions from the grid, the Government has confirmed.
The move brings forward the phase-out for unabated coal power, which does not have technology to capture and permanently bury its carbon dioxide emissions, by a year from the originally scheduled date of October 2025.
The UK grid’s shift from coal towards a growing reliance on renewables has helped drive down emissions as part of the legal target to cut pollution to zero overall – known as net zero – by 2050, though meeting the goal now needs more efforts to clean up home heating, transport, industry and farming. ....

The burning of coal to generate electricity will be consigned to history in October 2024 – one year earlier than originally planned – the government is promising.
Ministers hope the move will persuade other nations to also call time on coal power at the autumn Cop26 summit – billed as the last chance for the world to prevent a climate emergency.
Its contribution to the UK’s power mix has already plunged from around 40 per cent less than a decade ago to just 1.8 per cent last year, with more than a third now coming from wind. ....

A steady stream of black cabs pulled up outside Goldman Sachs’ European headquarters in central London early on Monday morning, transporting bankers to their desks following the relaxation of the government’s coronavirus lockdown regulations. For many, it is the first time in more than a year that they have been to the office.
Stepping out of one cab is Ben, a risk strategy officer who declined to give his surname and who is returning to Goldman’s £1.2bn Plumtree Court after months working from his flat in Islington. “I’m actually feeling pretty good about coming back to the office,” he says. “It will give some structure to the day.
