LANSING, Mich. â Michigan schools will begin receiving the same amount of money per student starting this fall.
The change comes after decades of unequal funding.
Lawmakers and advocates say the push to close the funding gap didnât come from hard political work but simply because there is more money to invest.

âThere was money on the table available to do this,â said Doug Pratt who serves as a spokesman for the Michigan Education Association. âItâs something that lawmakers have long wanted to do across both sides of the political aisle and there resources were there to finish the job.â
Holt kindergarten teacher named Michigan Teacher of the Year
LANSING A Holt Public Schools kindergarten teacher has been named Michigan Teacher of the Year.
Leah Porter teaches at Wilcox Elementary in Holt. She was picked from 10 finalists Thursday in a virtual ceremony hosted by State Superintendent Michael Rice, the State Board of Education and the Michigan Department of Education.
“Leah makes the difference daily and this recognition is well deserved,” said Holt Public Schools Superintendent David Hornak. “Leah is deeply committed to serving her students, families, colleagues and our entire learning community.
“I can tell you with confidence that it is with a strong service mindset that the 2021 Michigan Teacher of the Year is ready to serve us all.”
