Holyoke expects federal stimulus money will prevent fiscal 2022 cuts

HOLYOKE Federal stimulus funding should prevent cuts to the Holyoke Public School’s fiscal 2022 operating budget.
Acting Superintendent Anthony Soto outlined budget goals during Monday’s virtual School Committee meeting. The district is expecting $40 million in American Rescue Plan money.
Class sizes should stay at the current levels but could change as the stimulus dollars hit the system, he said.
“We’re going to be rolling out a significant amount of federal dollars,” Soto said.
He added, “The budget is built with a vision in mind and a pathway for every student” with both academic and career options. ....

HOLYOKE – The city’s public school system has set dates for high school graduations and senior year events.
Acting Superintendent Anthony Soto updated the School Committee Monday on graduation and senior events for May and June.
A majority of staff and students favored separate graduations for the Holyoke High School North and Dean Campuses. Both schools formed graduation task forces, which comprise students, teachers, parents, school district and health officials.
The North Campus graduation occurs Sunday, June 6 at 1 p.m., with Class Day scheduled for June 4. Cap and Gown Day is May 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ....

HOLYOKE – U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal (D-MA) said the City of Holyoke will receive nearly $32 million from the American Rescue Plan, part of the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package.
Neal, who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee, joined Acting Mayor Terence Murphy at Holyoke City Hall Friday for the announcement.
With no Republican support, President Joseph R. Biden signed the American Rescue Plan in March. “President Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan is ambitious, but achievable, and will rescue the American economy and start beating the virus,” according to www.whitehouse.gov. ....

HOLYOKE State education officials remain mum Thursday on School Receiver Alberto Vazquez Matos’ ongoing leave of absence or employment status.
Vazquez Matos took leave following a Feb. 8 School Committee meeting, where he stated he had COVID-19. He did not say if he still had the virus or recovered.
At the time, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education would not comment on why Vazquez Matos was on leave, a continuing trend.
An email seeking a direct comment from Vazquez Matos went unanswered.
Vazquez Matos’ tenure as receiver of the Holyoke Public Schools began July 1. He previously served in the Hartford, Connecticut Public Schools. ....
