Residents of any Iowa public school district could force their local school board to put a proposal on a meeting agenda if they gather enough petition signatures, according to a bill the Iowa Legislature passed late Tuesday night.
The agenda items could address a variety of school proposals, including curriculum that parents are unhappy with, according to the bill, House File 868.
The proposal, which Republicans included in their approximately $1 billion education budget bill, passed the Senate Tuesday by a 28-17 vote. It also passed the House by a 54-35 vote.
Republicans said the proposal would help give parents a greater voice in school decisions. But Democrats criticized it as micromanaging school districts, condemning the measure along with other school accountability measures Republicans included in the bill.

DES MOINES, Iowa - Two Iowa Democratic State lawmakers are asking for more oversight after Governor Kim Reynolds decision to send money back to the federal government.
Reynolds announced Thursday on Fox News that she had given back $95 million meant for student testing for COVID-19.
Senator Claire Celsi of West Des Moines and Representative Ruth Ann Gaines of Des Moines are calling for oversight committees to conduct meetings on the management of the federal money.
The Iowa Capital Dispatch reports the Republican oversight committee chairs are dismissing the meetings as unnecessary.
Representative Holly Brink, chair of the House Government Oversight Committee, told the Capital Dispatch that a meeting on Reynolds decision would be a “politically-motivated waste of time.”
