Bill forces retailers to disclose best energy prices

ENERGY retailers will be forced to inform their customers if there is a better deal available when new legislation, introduced in the ACT Legislative Assembly today (April 20), comes into effect later this year,
says ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr. 
“These new rules will require energy retailers to tell you about a ‘reference price’ – a common benchmark that your deal will be compared against – and to tell you if a better deal is available, without you having to ask,” he says.
“We know the difference between a standing offer price and the best market price can be up to $400 a year. We also know that around 40 per cent of Canberrans are on standing offer contracts.” ....

Deadly mushrooms enter peak growing period

DEATH cap mushroom growth has increased significantly in Canberra this week, sparking a warning from the ACT chief health officer to
not eat or pick any wild mushrooms.
Dr Kerryn Coleman is warning Canberrans to avoid touching any wild mushrooms with their bare hands, keep children and animals away, and if Canberrans see a mushroom that might be a death cap mushroom, report it.

Easily mistaken for edible mushrooms and known to grow in areas across the ACT – mostly near established oak trees but not always – death cap mushrooms pose a danger to the public and are entering their peak growing period with the onset of autumn weather, she says.  ....

Exposed wiring shuts childcare centres

TWO Canberra childcare centres were shut by WorkSafe ACT after inspectors discovered exposed wires on an electrical power board at one centre and a damaged lead on a vacuum at the other during a five-month audit of 45 childcare centres. 
Between November 2 and March 31, WorkSafe ACT also issued 179 improvement notices at childcare centres due to work health and safety breaches.
Work health and safety commissioner Jacqueline Agius said:
“When our inspectors visited these centres, they found a range of work health and safety issues which put workers at risk.
“Trending issues included not having procedures to safely store chemicals (such as cleaning products), no safety data sheets about hazardous chemicals and not regularly testing and tagging electrical equipment. ....
