MIL-OSI New Zealand: Next steps for fast-tracked Te Ara Tupua confirmed

Source: New Zealand Transport Agency
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has today announced the approval of funding to deliver the Ngā Ūranga ki Pito-one (Ngauranga to Petone) section of Te Ara Tupua, and the appointment of alliance partners to construct the new shared path.
The Ngā Ūranga ki Pito-One section will fill a missing link in the region’s walking and cycling network, and make cycling between Wellington and Lower Hutt a safe and attractive option. More people walking and cycling will improve public health, help reduce emissions from transport and ease the pressure on our roads.
“Waka Kotahi funding of $171-$190 million has been approved to get this fast-tracked project underway. $7 million has been committed by our partners, Wellington City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council. This investment is expected to support around 330 jobs counting those employed directly in the project and in its supply chain,” says Waka Kotahi Director of Region ....

$190 million approved for Petone to Ngauranga cycleway

In a statement, Waka Kotahi said more than 700 cyclists currently made the trip between Ngauranga and Petone daily, and that number was expected to triple within the next decade.
Patrick Morgan, of Cycling Action Network, said the estimate was a conservative one.
“It will be an instant success. This is a reward for years and years of hard work by a lot of people,” he said.
“It will be a transformational project, and we will wonder why we didn’t do it decades ago.”
Morgan said the announcement would increase pressure on the Hutt and Wellington city councils to improve the safety of access to either side of Te Ara Tupua. ....
