Daeboreum of 1887: Saving the moon

By Robert Neff
On the evening of Feb. 8, 1887, Seoul was awash with excitement. It was Daeboreum, the first full moon of the lunar year, and the citizens of Joseon s largest city and capital were busy with their holiday preparations.
This year s was not a normal Daeboreum, for it was also the night of a partial lunar eclipse. According to Homer Hulbert ― one of the earliest American English teachers ― to many superstitious people, the eclipse was one of the most startling things to occur, as they believed it was a great heavenly dog trying to devour the moon.
Much of the population, wishing to know what the new year had in store for them, sought spiritual and supernatural advice from shamans (known as mudang ) and fortunetellers. Horace N. Allen, an American missionary doctor, described (in his usual untactful manner) how some of these fortunetellers obtained their knowledge: ....

Clair B. Woodford in 1917. Passport photographOn January 17, 1901, a group of young men from Whitley County, Indiana began one of the greatest adventures of their lives ― a three-year-contract as supervisors at the gold mines in northern Korea owned by Oriental Consolidated Mining Company (OCMC). One of these men was Clair Byrum Woodford, a handsome youth with blue eyes and brown hair.
Woodford was only 24 years old (he turned 25 while enroute), but unlike his peers he was experienced. He had served in the Spanish American War (but never left the United States or saw combat) and was a carpenter by trade. His cousin, Thomas R. Marshall ― a successful lawyer and friend of the OCMC s, probably facilitated his selection to the group of you ....

I am in awe of the unique 10-story marble pagoda of Gyeongcheon Temple (National Treasure No. 86) on display in the lobby of the National Museum in Seoul. Most ancient Korean pagodas were made of granite, brick or wood. They are distinctive monuments designed to enshrine sacred relics at Buddhist temples.
Unlike typical pagodas that have an odd number of stories ― three, five or seven ― the Gyeongcheon pagoda has 10 stories which represent the 10 Perfections in Mahayana Buddhist teaching.
The pagoda was originally erected during Goryeo Dynasty in 1348 at Gyeongcheon Temple in modern-day Gaeseong City, North Korea. It is a distinctive architectural structure in terms of shape and style. The lower three stories are polygonal like the Chinese ideograph 亞 depicting the influence of Tibetan and Mongolian Buddhism. However, the upper seven stories are rectangular like traditi ....
