Burnham and Highbridge community groups invited to apply for grant funding
Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge community groups, organisations and charities are being invited to apply for grant funding by the Town Council.
A spokesman for Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council says: “It has been a challenging year and we know that the work of many community groups will have been affected by COVID-19. The council is pleased to be able to provide grants to our community and wants to support local groups wherever it can.”
“The money granted can be used to support the cost of a capital project, such as purchasing equipment or works to buildings, it can be put towards general running costs, or it can be used to deliver a community event.” ....

Burnham-On-Sea railway signal box set to open to visitors tomorrow
Burnham-On-Sea Railway Heritage Group is opening the town’s replica railway signal box for visitors tomorrow (Tuesday, July 27th).
The building – which is located near to the site of the original signal box in the town’s Old Station Approach – will be open from 10am until mid afternoon.
The railway signal box was funded by fundraising and a National Lottery grant and it was launched in September 2018 alongside several other rail-themed items nearby.
In recent years, other railway items installed in Burnham include a set of railway buffers, a station name board, a signal, an information board, and a rail-themed weather vane. ....

Mayor says Town Council is 'considering its options' after unitary decision

Burnham-On-Sea & Highbridge’s Mayor has said the Town Council is considering what direction it might take with regards to the potential re-organisation of local services and assets following the news that a unitary council for Somerset has been approved by the Government.
As Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here, the Secretary of State for Local Government has taken the decision that there will be a single unitary council in Somerset, which follows the plan set out in the One Somerset proposal.
Subject to parliamentary agreement, the Government will abolish Somerset’s four district councils and the county council and replace them with one unitary authority in May 2023. ....

Speeds of 81mph have also been recorded along Burnham’s Marine Drive by the speed indicator devices, installed by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, according to new figures released this week.
Dismayed councillors have this week decided to pass on the data to Burnham-On-Sea Police to ask them to step up speed patrols.
Cllr Andy Hodge told this week’s council meeting: “A high percentage of people are using these roads are doing a good job, staying within the limit, but about 15 per cent are not driving within the limits and some are driving at extremely excessive speeds of up to 100mph, which is extremely dangerous. To me, it is something we should speak to the Police about.” ....

NHS flags were raised in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge and a new sand art design was unveiled on Brean beach to thank key workers on NHS Social Care and Frontline Workers Day on Monday (July 5th).
A huge sand art design was unveiled on Brean Beach by sand artist Simon Beck to honour key workers, pictured above. It stated in the middle: ‘Thank you to all front line workers.’
Burnham and Highbridge Town Council joined in with the day by raising NHS flags at the towns’ flag poles next to Old Station Approach and in Highbridge’s Market Street. ....
