There must be something in the water of Nenagh, County Tipperary. The town’s offspring seem to have unusually high traces of medal. Make that gold medal.
1956 Olympic 1,500 meter winner, Ronnie Delany, with the Tipperary Olympic Gold Memorial Committee has launched a project to honor three famous champions with Nenagh roots. Already fundraising has begun on the plan that will take £80,000 to complete. Designed by noted artist Jeanne Rynhart, a sculpture will feature life-size bronze statues of gold medallists Matt McGrath (16 lb. Hammer, 1912), Johnny Hayes (Marathon, 1908), both record-breakers, and Bob Tisdall (400m. Hurdles, 1932). Tisdall, the only living honoree (he resides in Australia), still lectures on physical fitness. And he practices what he preaches. At 86 he did his first parachute jump from 12,000 feet, at 90 he crewed the Lough Derg regata and at 93 – the oldest Olympian in the w ....

Hibernia: Irish U.N. Sculpture | Irish America

Entitled
Arrival, the work portrays Irish emigrants debarking from a ship. If this sounds like a typical Famine commemoration, it’s not. As the Irish Minister of State at the Department of Finance Martin Cullen pointed out, it commemorates a “confident Irish people still coming into America, or wherever they may be going into the world.” It is an expression of Ireland’s newfound confidence.
The idea grew out of a visit Irish government officials made to the United Nations, where they observed sculptures donated by various countries. When they asked where the sculpture from Ireland was, they were informed there wasn’t one. ....

California High Schooler Wins Surfing Competitions on Tricolor Longboard

Los Angeles area high schooler Emily Rose Flavin, 17, is an award-winning amateur competitive surfer in both short and longboard. This summer 2017 she won three longboard championships, all while riding her trademark green, white, and orange Irish tricolor board. Emily is fourth-generation Irish American with roots in Cork and Tipperary.
“I wear a lot of sunscreen,” she jokes about her heritage, adding, “My Irish temper helps me when I am competing. Ireland is surrounded by water and I basically live in the water, so I feel connected to that aspect as well.” Emily hasn’t been to Ireland yet, but has plans with her father to tour the country within the next two years and make a documentary about Ireland’s connection to surfing culture. ....
