Biden Administration Appoints Special Envoy To Haiti

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Biden administration announced Thursday the appointment of a special envoy to Haiti to help bring stability after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise.
The state department appointed Daniel Foote, a career diplomat.
Foote will engage with Haitian and international partners to promote stability and peace in the Caribbean nation, as well as encourage free and fair elections.
On Thursday night, a memorial service held for President Moise at the Notre Dame d’Haiti Catholic Church.
The ceremony honoring the president comes ahead of him being laid to rest Friday in his hometown of Cap-Haitien. ....

MIAMI – There was a moment of silence Wednesday at Notre Dame d’Haiti Catholic Church in the heart of Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. It was in memory of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. Officials said a squad of gunmen pretending to be U.S. agents assassinated him about 1 a.m. at his home in Haiti.
At the church along Northeast 62nd Avenue, Rev. Reginald Jean Mary delivered his sermon in Haitian Creole and English. He asked his parishioners to pray for First Lady Martine Moïse, who was injured when Moïse, 53, was killed near Port-au-Prince. ....

This Miami janitor is keeping people fed, in her neighborhood and beyond

Every Friday night, long after everyone else in her house has gone to bed, Doramise Moreau can be found in the kitchen, cooking plate after plate of chicken, turkey, rice, and beans. She's been doing this since the coronavirus pandemic began last spring, and doesn't plan on stopping. Moreau, 60, cooks at least 1,000 meals every week for the hungry, delivering them to Miami's Notre Dame d'Haiti Catholic Church. The church uses donations to pay for the groceries, but Moreau does the shopping and cooking solo, after she is done working for the day as a school janitor. Moreau told The Associated Press she never will turn away anyone who is hungry, saying "if they go home and have nothing, it hurts my feelings." Even as a child, Moreau wanted to make sure people were fed — she would take any extra food she could find at home and give it to those in need.
