StoryWalk series, a family-friendly outdoor multilingual program comes to the area – Jamaica Plain Gazette

A family-friendly outdoor multilingual program that combines reading with the outdoors kicked off Monday and will go through May 10 at nearby Franklin Park, the Hyde Park Library and Iacono Park in Hyde Park.
The city’s second StoryWalk series will be held at Franklin Park, the Hyde Park Library at 35 Harvard Ave. and Iacono Park at 150 Readville Street and features “Augustus and his Smile” in both English and Spanish as well as library activities.
At the park locations there will be a  multicultural “board book” that lets young children explore the area. The board book’s bold illustrations show children the people and animals they will meet, and objects that they will see and hear during the outdoor park experience. Laminated pages from children’s books are attached to wooden stakes and installed along outdoor paths. As visitors stroll through the park, they are directed to the next page in the story.  ....

Never too late to honor a pioneer

Never too late to honor a pioneer
Niran Al-Agba, MD, Columnist
Last year, on a cold February morning, I sat in my kitchen reading a troubling story.  One of my professional heroes, the first Black female physician in the United States, a woman who overcame remarkable odds in a field dominated by men during the 19th Century, laid in an unmarked grave.  Her fight against sexism, racism, and intolerance over a century ago paved the way for the women physicians of today to follow in her footsteps. Astonishingly, Dr. Rebecca Crumpler’s final resting place did not reflect the fact she changed the course of history.       ....
