By WHAV Staff | Charles C. White Pool. (File photograph.) The public now has opportunities to use the Charles C. White Pool at Haverhill High School. The swimming pool opens to the public during certain hours beginning Monday, July 5. Open use of the pool then takes place Monday, Wednesday and Friday from noon-2 p.m. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Adult lap swimming is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5:30-8 a.m., and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Mayor James J. Fiorentini, chairman of the School Committee, recently asked that the pool be open to the public when not in use by the schools. He said free swim lessons for children will be added soon. ....

Sapienza Memorial Track and Athletic Field at Haverhill High School served as a reunion Wednesday of family, friends and students of the late math teacher and cross country coach. His daughter, School Committee member Toni Sapienza-Donais, who served as mistress of ceremonies, told WHAV she was moved by the gathering. ....

Haverhill High School will begin looking for a new principal as Glenn Burns returns to Salem, Mass., as executive principal of Salem High Schools on July 1. Salem Superintendent Stephen Zrike Jr. made the appointment official Friday. As WHAV reported first April 20, Burns emailed families, writing he may be leaving Haverhill since he had been named a finalist for the Salem job. Burns wrote again yesterday, telling families his work at Haverhill High “provided me fulfillment and growth beyond what I could have anticipated.” “Over the past three years I have learned what a Hillie is and what it means to be a Hillie. I have been proud to be part of a community that expects more and advocates fiercely for our children. We have overcome many obstacles together and each time prevailed stronger as a school and community,” he added. ....

Ron Chapman, who went from his Haverhill High School graduation in 1953 to a job as a WHAV disc jockey and eventually became a national broadcast hall of famer, died Monday at 85. He gained fame under the name “Irving Harrigan” when he joined KLIF, Dallas, where he teamed up with Jack “Charlie Brown” Woods in 1959 on the “Charlie and Harrigan Show.” Chapman was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters’ Radio Hall of Fame in 2010, the Chicago-based Museum of Broadcast Communications’ Radio Hall of Fame in 2012 and again, as part of the team of Charlie and Harrigan, in 2014. ....
