Small California farming town becomes the fasting sinking area in United States


The California town that is SINKING 2ft every year: Agriculture has drained the land around Corcoran and turned it into a slowmotion sinkhole
The farming town of Corcoran, California has been slow sinking for 14 years as agricultural companies continue to pump underground water to irrigate crops
While Corcoran has sunk only about four feet in certain areas since 2015, its predicted that city will sink another six to 11 feet over the next two decades 
But residents have already felt the immediate effects of the slow sinking, and at a cost for a town where the median income is $40,000
But despite the effect its having on the town, residents and leaders in the ag-dominated town have chosen to downplay or flat out ignore the town s sinkage ....

Since its inception, Community Action Programs Cayuga/Seneca’s Food Recovery Program has been a force in tackling food insecurity and addressing emerging challenges through innovation and thoughtful collaboration. Over the past year, we have been flooded with images of long lines at food pantries, often only seen in history books, that have brought the largely hidden issue of hunger to the forefront. For some, it s no longer just the homeless man visiting the soup kitchen, it is hard-working families and individuals simply struggling to make ends meet.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines food insecurity as a lack of access to enough nutritionally adequate food for an active, healthy lifestyle for all household members. It’s a complex problem that does not exist in isolation and though closely related to poverty, not all people living below the poverty line experience food insecurity, and people living a ....

California ramps up in-person ag workshops

Attendees at Holloway and AgSoilworks’ grower-specific gathering will include demonstrations of AgSoilworks’ deep-ripping and development services, which include single to five-shank ripping for optimal root-zone conditions and placement of gypsum, compost and fertilizer, according to the event’s website.
The event will also feature redevelopment planning discussions from local growers and experts; updates on Holloway’s soil amendments and other products and services; Holloway gypsum mine tours, and a barbecue lunch.
The field day will be held just north of Holloway’s Lost Hills location, 13850 Holloway Road.
Because of COVID-19 protocols, start times for the hour-long demonstrations will be staggered, with identical sessions beginning at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Attendees must reserve one of the sessions in advance by calling Holloway at (661) 758-6484 or AgSoilworks at (805) 400-4582. ....
