Covid-19: Auckland woman 'gasping for air' five months after catching UK variant

But three days later she became disorientated and breathless while strolling down Oxford St.
Power was taken to hospital where doctors discovered her lungs had become “cloudy like a smoker”.
“I was really sick, but they just didn t have enough rooms in the hospitals in London,” she said.
“You had to be dying to use them, so I was discharged a few hours later.”

Power initially had mild symptoms, but then while strolling down Oxford St she collapsed, unable to breathe.
Power learnt to manage her symptoms, which include chronic fatigue, breathing difficulties, heart pains and dizziness, on her own. ....

Erie native who became decorated military leader dies in Virginia

One of Erie’s most distinguished military heroes, Col. Dennis McSweeney, died of cancer at 79 this month in Williamsburg, Virginia. McSweeney, honored in recent years as an Outstanding Alumnus of Gannon University, won a Purple Heart for his heroism during the Vietnam war. He commanded U.S. military bases in Germany and later served as an official at the Pentagon. Born in Erie, he never lost his affection for his hometown. After his mother, Charlotte McSweeney, longtime switchboard operator at the Erie Times-News, suffered a stroke, he packed up his family and moved back to Erie to help during her convalescence. ....

Not even a world in pandemic could halt Helena Power s glamorous, globe-trotting life.
While looking after and teaching the child of a London billionaire, the 26-year-old Kiwi spent much of 2020 boarding private jets to retreats in Ibiza, Switzerland and Australia.
Then she caught Covid-19 in London in December.
Now her damaged lungs resemble those of a 20-year smoker, leaving her so short of breath she can t leave the house. She spends up to 12 hours a day sleeping. ....
