Scrambling through blue ice caves on a heli-hike of Franz Josef glacier

When a helicopter passes overhead, taking another group on a scenic flight further up the valley, everyone stops to stare.
That noise would have been constant this time last year, as thousands of mainly overseas visitors were ferried from base to ice and back again.

The ice in the deep crevasses shines blue, but it looks white on the surface.
The whole town would have been booked out with visitors, the car park down in the valley straining with bright rented camper vans and tour buses. On New Year’s Day in 2020, a record 7137 people visited the valley, according to Department of Conservation track counter data. ....

Geraldine man follows childhood dream of opening own museum

Paul Robins says his partner Lorraine Bowman “cranked” him up to do the museum when he turned 60.
“I stuck it all away in a shed.”
Robins qualified as a diesel mechanic then worked as a helicopter engineer for Whirlwide Helicopters, forerunner of The Helicopter Line and Airwork Ltd, and kept collecting.
Now 66 and retired, the museum plan took off when he turned 60.

The collection includes guns and vehicles, like this bren carrier which is on loan.
“My partner Lorraine cranked me up to do it when I was 60. We moved from Point and built the shed here in 2014.” ....

Climbers rescued at Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park

Three climbers were rescued at Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park on Wednesday.
A Rescue Co-ordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) spokesperson said two women and a man were separately winched off the summit ridge of Mt Malte Brun in the national park after activating the SOS function on their emergency device about 6pm.
“No-one was injured, but they were stuck in difficult terrain at 3100 metres altitude with no food and water; following an unplanned night on the mountain,’ the spokesperson said.
The International Emergency Co-ordination Centre in Texas received the satellite SOS and messaged RCCNZ. ....

Those traversing New Zealand’s backcountry, including the Kepler Track, pictured, should carry two forms of reliable communications in case of emergency.
Those heading into New Zealand’s backcountry are being reminded to carry distress beacons after three people were rescued from two South Island tracks on Thursday.
A Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) spokeswoman said a man and a woman were tramping the Dusky Track in Fiordland National Park when the woman injured her ankle about 4pm on Wednesday.
The pair set up camp for the night and activated a personal locator beacon the next morning, which was received by the centre about 7am on Thursday. ....
