New Trinity College Dublin centre seeks to unlock new bioactives for next-gen nutraceuticals

Trinity College Dublin (TCD) are to dedicate facilities to identify new bioactives from macro and microalgae, cereals, bioactive herbs and plant sources to create supplements and cosmetic applications. The new Trinity Centre for Natural Products Research or NatPro will be based at the University’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and will look to partner with industries in order to discover these products. “The tide is rising in the Natural Product sectors globally and in Ireland,” says Professor Helen Sheridan, NatPro Founder and Academic Director at Trinity College. “We at NatPro are excited to use a creative scientific lens to lead the pursuit of innovation in this sector.

UCD trial indicates that multi-species swards are the future

May 20, 2021 11:51 am Multi-species swards – comprising mixes of grasses, legumes and herbs – are consistently out-performing perennial ryegrass (PRG) monocultures (receiving more than 200kg/N/ha), in ongoing research trials at University College Dublin (UCD) Lyons Estate. Moreover, these multi-species swards are receiving 50% less nitrogen (N) than their PRG counterparts. According to UCD’s Dr. Helen Sheridan, multi-species swards work on the basis of the different plant types combining to make optimal use of the resources contained within the soil. Multi-species swards and climate change Sheridan spoke at an Agricultural Science Association (ASA) webinar earlier this week. The event was held in association with Germinal Ireland.

Should you be planting multispecies swards on your farm?

Red clover can form part of a multispecies sward. Multispecies, it’s a buzzword at the minute, but it’s a buzzword with the potential to have a significant impact on Irish agriculture. The Irish Farmers Journal caught up with UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science’s Prof Tommy Boland and Dr Helen Sheridan, both of whom are working on the SmartSward project and have plenty of experience with multispecies swards from their research. When speaking to the UCD pair, it becomes clear that there is huge potential in multispecies swards and their use could help in meeting fertiliser reduction targets set out by the Department of Agriculture and the EU.
