National Party MP Andrew Bayly called for an inquiry into how branch closures, and the ditching of cheques, including by government agencies like ACC, Inland Revenue and Kiwibank, had made it harder for “vulnerable” people to manage their money lives. Bayly called for the inquiry after hearing the story of a dyslexic Pukekohe man too afraid to use internet banking, who was told by his bank to drive to another town to a branch to see a teller. ....

A Labour Party branch secretary is criticising his own party after seeing first-hand what New Zealand border controls are doing to foreigners in the country since before lockdown. Peter Barrett was recently re-elected as secretary of the Labour Party branch in the Auckland suburb of Ponsonby and worked on Labour candidate Helen White’s 2020 campaign for Auckland Central. He was not about to switch allegiances but believed the Government – which he still mostly backed – was moving in a world of “absurdities” by removing the rights of some foreigners to work here when no New Zealanders could be found to fill jobs. ....

Murchison Area School principal Andy Ashworth said the bus was taking children home when the crash happened and was in an area with little signal. Last week four school students were injured after two buses crashed in Christchurch. St John clinical director Dr Tony Smith said ambulance officers were often the first to arrive at the scene and see first hand the devastating impact of crashes especially when passengers were not wearing seatbelts. Our view that seatbelts on buses of an agreed definition should be compulsory remains unchanged; we believe safety belts should be worn to prevent fatalities and serious injuries including fractured and amputated limbs. ....
