By Rich McManus NIAID’s Dr. Helen Su When the global pandemic caused by a novel coronavirus made its debut in late 2019, NIAID’s Dr. Helen Su was studying inborn errors of immunity in patients with viral infections, mostly rhinoviruses, which cause colds, and influenza. Why, she wondered, was there such variability of outcomes in people infected with the same virus? In a remarkable example of the NIH Intramural Research Program’s nimbleness, she and her colleagues quickly pivoted to studies of SARS-CoV-2 when it became apparent that Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, was spreading fast and becoming, in at least a small portion of patients, life-threatening. ....
Julie Segre Delivers the Anita Roberts Lecture BY SUNITA CHOPRA, NCI We often associate microbes with disease. But the Human Microbiome Project has shown that people live in a mutually beneficial relationship with trillions of microbes on and in their bodies. Human diseases affecting the mouth (cavities) and gastrointestinal tract (inflammatory bowel disease) as well as more complex diseases such as premature birth or type 2 diabetes are associated with alterations in the microbiome. And now, clinical studies are investigating whether those modifications might even drive some features of disease. Julie Segre Senior Investigator Julie A. Segre (National Human Genome Research Institute, NHGRI), who is exploring the skin microbiome, explained the dichotomy in her Anita Roberts Lecture titled “Human Microbiome: Friend or Foe” on November 3, 2020. She uses genome sequencing and computational methods to characterize the healthy skin microbiome to better underst ....
COVID-19 One Year Later: The Biology and the Business As the world hits the one-year anniversary of COVID-19, GEN looks at the work being done to combat the pandemic January 8, 2021 As this image shows, the SARS-CoV-2 virion is studded with proteins, one of which is the so-called spike protein. The spike, which consists of two subunits, S1 and S2, took center stage early in the COVID-19 pandemic and has become a key component in the development of vaccines and therapeutics. [Design Cells/Getty Images] Share The days are long, but the years are short.” This bittersweet saying, which is often shared with new parents, may apply to everyone who has been living through the COVID-19 pandemic although what we’re experiencing is almost entirely bitter and not at all sweet. Over the past 12 months, SARS-CoV-2, an RNA virus that carries a mere 29,903 nucleotides, has devastated our communities, disabling economies and taking far too many lives. However, as we hit the ....
