KABUL, Feb 14 Dozens of oil and gas tankers carrying millions of dollars’ worth of fuel caught fire on Saturday, creating an inferno at Afghanistan’s biggest trade crossing with Iran, officials said. The blaze broke out in the early afternoon at Islam Qala port, 120 kilometres from the western city of Herat, engulfing the tankers that were parked nearby after crossing the border. ....
(Last Updated On: February 14, 2021) Two explosions of fuel tankers at the Islam Qala border crossing between Afghanistan’s western province of Herat and Iran were powerful enough to be spotted from space by NASA satellites on Saturday afternoon.
One of the explosions happened at about 1.10pm Afghanistan time and the other about half an hour later at 1.42pm local time.
According to local officials the fire started at about midday when a fuel tanker exploded at the customs facility at the border crossing.
This caused a massive fire that consumed more than 500 trucks carrying natural gas and fuel, sources and Iranian state media indicated. ....
Herat Fire Costs 100s of Millions of Dollars to Investors The massive fire at the border town of Islam Qala, 120 kilometers west of Herat city, has inflicted hundreds of millions of dollars in financial damage to investors who kept their goods parked at the area and distributed them to other parts of the country once they were cleared through customs. Unconfirmed figures show that thousands of vehicles carrying fuel and mostly imported goods have been damaged. The fire was fully extinguished after almost 24 hours on Sunday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Finance, which said a team has been assigned to measure the damages caused by the blaze. ....
