Feds Ask Ninth Circuit to Approve Arizona Copper Mine Plan

(CN) A Canadian mining company should be permitted to pile waste rock on U.S. Forest Service land in Arizona near a planned open-pit copper mine, attorneys for the federal agency and the company told a Ninth Circuit appeals panel Monday.
The U.S. Service Forest Service approved placement of a tailings pile, which would cover 2,700 acres, on “open land” land not covered by a mining claim located two miles from the planned site of the Rosemont copper mine. But in August 2019 a federal judge ruled the agency misapplied regulations that govern where Rosemont Copper Co. can put the waste overturned the agency’s approval of the mine. ....

SALINEVILLE Students at Southern Local are going to have to wait just a little bit longer to return for in-person classes.
The school district, which was the first to go back to remote classes in November, had been planning a return for Tuesday, Jan. 19. However, Superintendent Tom Cunningham said the board felt the case numbers were still too high and they chose to hold off for one more week.
Classes are now set to resume on Monday, Jan. 25.
Cunningham said with Monday, Jan. 18 a holiday and Friday, Jan. 22 already planned as a Zoom day, the students were only really going to be there three days next week anyway. Southern Local’s board voted on Nov. 19 to go back to online classes after starting the 2020-21 school year in person. ....

SALINEVILLE Southern Local athletes have resumed playing sports following action taken at Tuesday’s school board meeting.
The board voted 5-0 to immediately reinstate athletics and all other extracurricular activities after a half dozen parents told them how the decision to suspend further participation starting Nov. 23 because of the COVID-19 virus was affecting their children.
As the number of people testing positive for the virus continued to steadily climb this fall, the board decided at its Nov. 19 meeting to cancel in-school classes, with all students learning online at home starting Nov. 23 and continuing until Jan. 19.
The board also canceled all extracurricular school activities as a precaution, but promised to revisit the issue at its Dec. 8 meeting. ....
