At the end of a difficult winter, a big snow storm inspires awe in greater San Diego


Barely a week before the start of spring, San Diego County is a winter wonderland.
March storms often dart through the region. But a mass of cold air that formed in the Gulf of Alaska continues to slowly sink through Southern California, blanketing mountains with heavy snow and wild bursts of rain. (Rainfall totals below)
The San Diego mountains had 12 to 18 inches of snow through late Thursday. By early Friday, the figure could be 2 feet. Skies might clear by afternoon, making the peaks visible from far away. Fresh snow reflects most sunlight, giving it a natural brilliance.
“I’m a transplant from Maine and I thought I wouldn’t care if I ever saw snow again,” said Scott Paulson, who works at UC San Diego’s Geisel Library. “But it’s been a long COVID winter and I’m really looking forward to seeing those not-so-distant mountains. It’ll be beautiful.” ....

San Diego Area Can Expect Calmer Conditions Between Storms


It will be mostly clear on Tuesday night.
As of early Monday evening, inclement conditions had delivered up to about three-fifths of an inch of precipitation along the coast and in the local deserts, a little more than an inch in the inland valleys, and almost 2 1/3 inches in parts of the East County highlands, according to the National Weather Service.
Topping the 24-hour rainfall tallies as of 5 p.m. were 2.31 inches on Big Black Mountain, 1.79 at Henshaw Dam, 1.76 in Mesa Grande, 1.58 in Pine Hills, 1.35 in Descanso and 1.34 in Pine Valley, the weather service reported.

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – An unsettled atmospheric pattern was expected to move out of the San Diego area Monday evening, ushering in several days of mostly dry conditions beginning Tuesday one day after a cold winter storm brought downpours, mountain snow and high winds.
But another significant storm is expected to move over the San Diego area Thursday night or Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
It will be partly cloudy Tuesday with a slight chance of showers in the morning, then mostly sunny in the afternoon, with highs around 57 and winds 15 to 20 mph, gusting to 30. It will be mostly clear on Tuesday night. ....
