German politicians sound unprecedented pro-Israel rhetoric at Berlin rally German politicians sound unprecedented pro-Israel rhetoric at Berlin rally Still, some attendees wonder: Why now? What’s the source? And will it be followed by real action? (May 25, 2021 / JNS) Just hours before Israel and Hamas announced a ceasefire on May 21, German politicians representing all political parties, except for the excluded right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD), gathered in front of the iconic Brandenburg Gate yards away from Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial to pledge its unwavering support for Israel. The rally, which drew by larger estimates about 1,000 people, was organized by the WerteInitiative (“ValuesInitiative”), a Jewish NGO that aims to secure Jewish life in Germany, and co-sponsored by several Jewish and non-Jewish groups. ....
Why the German Media are Courting the Anti-Islam Movement If discussions on the cultural pages of German newspapers in spring 2010 were representative of German opinion, then we must assume that around half the German population comprehend Islam as a threat. Does the negative attitude towards Islam testify to vigilance or to prejudice? Stefan Weidner looks into the matter The crucial formulation in the anti-Islamic doctrine is extremely simplistic: Islam was never good, is not good, and cannot be good, writes Stefan Weidner No matter how coarse and emotional these debates may have been, a glance across Germany s frontiers shows that things could have been much worse. German police reported a total of 2,275 anti-Semitic hate crimes an average of six per day in 2020, according to preliminary data provided by the federal government. The tally represents a more than 10% increase over the number of anti-Semitic crimes reported in 2019. Police were able to identify 1,367 suspects but only five individuals were ultimately arrested. It remains unclear why so few perpetrators have faced legal consequences for their crimes, especially when government officials repeatedly claim that fighting anti-Semitism is a top priority. A reason may be that it is politically incorrect to identify the true suspects. German police, possibly under orders from political authorities, systematically assign unsolved anti-Semitic hate crimes to the far right. ....
Follow Jan. 24, 2021 Officially, the Jewish branch of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) political party has just 24 members. Its co-chair, Artur Abramovych, has a surprising message for Haaretz, though: “You have to know that there are many Jews who vote for the AfD.” The party has proved one of the most controversial in Germany since its founding in 2013 and is now preparing for general elections later this year by stepping up its anti-immigration platform and railing against the “establishment,” which has been led by outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel for the past 16 years. The AfD shocked many in Europe when it became the third-biggest party in the Bundestag in 2017, after immigration became the number one election issue following Merkel’s decision to open the country’s borders to more than a million immigrants, mainly from Muslim countries, in 2015. ....
