Watch: Best, Burger team up to rally No. 5 Staples past No. 4 Ridgefield Sean Patrick Bowley | May 16, 2021 WESTPORT Staples’ boys lacrosse team didn’t have one of its best attackmen to start the year. Then it lost its starting goalie for seven games with a concussion. Though some players remain sidelined, the pieces seem to be coming together for the No. 5-ranked Wreckers. With No. 4 Ridgefield threatening to script its own comeback story, Staples’ Aidan Best, a Lafayette-bound junior attackman, scored four goals and had two assists, including the winner to teammate Matt Burger with 2:21 remaining to rally the Wreckers to a 12-11 victory Saturday. ....
Staples boys’ lacrosse played in a back and forth battle against Fairfield prep on Thursday, May 7, but came up short, losing 13-9. After being down 6-5 at halftime, Staples quickly let up a goal in the third quarter, allowing Prep to build a two goal lead. All of the momentum was in Prep’s hands until two quick goals from Staples’ Tyler Clark ’23 and Kevin Lynch ’21 evened things up. “After Kevin scored to tie it up we felt like we had all the momentum,” Max Udell ’22 said. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter where Fairfield Prep separated themselves from the Wreckers. With about five minutes left in the quarter, and with a 10-8 lead, Prep’s goalie went coast to coast, putting one in the net and pushing the lead to 11-8. It was a goal that knocked the wind out of the Wreckers’ sails. ....
The previously undefeated Staples boys’ lacrosse team lost to Darien 10-7 at home on April 29. The Wreckers were ranked third in the state and the Blue Wave was ranked number one in the state entering the game. At the start of the second quarter, the Blue Wave went on a 3-0 run to take a lead which was never lost, pushing the score to 6-3 entering halftime. “We missed a lot of open opportunities on the offensive end and made a bunch of silly mistakes on the defensive end,” Derek Sale ’22 said. At the start of the third quarter, Charlie Howard ’22 was able to score two goals to push the score to 7-5, but the Blue Wave went on another 3-0 run to end the threat of a comeback. ....
