Massachusetts lost more than 5,000 in battle, about 13,000 total (including those who died from disease) of the more than 140,000 the state sent to battle from its 1.2 million free residents. The war that took so many lives also left hundreds of thousands of others wounded and often maimed so that they would not work again, or at least not in their prewar profession. ....
