A mural honouring George Floyd was recently revealed outside his former high school.
The two-block mural is located directly in front of Jack Yates High School in Houston, TX.
Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in May 2020 after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck.
“We come to celebrate the life and legacy of our hometown hero, Mr. George Floyd,” Carl Davis, chairman for the Houston Society for Change, said during the dedication ceremony. ....

At least 200 teachers from 9 local school districts participated in the protest to bring change to the education system.
HOUSTON - Local teachers called out sick to protest STAAR testing and to call for safer conditions in schools.
According to the group Community Voices for Public Education, at least 200 teachers from 9 local school districts participated in National Sick Out Day.
The effort is to call for the suspension of standardizing testing because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last week, the Texas Education Agency stated it will suspend A-F ratings for the 2020-2021 school year but STAAR testing will proceed as a way to gauge student learning during the pandemic. ....

HOUSTON – A high school English teacher has accused school administrators of bullying and retaliation because of her decision to wear medical scrubs to work.
“I wear scrubs and a scrub cap,” said Abarca, an English teacher at James Madison High School in southwest Houston.
Abarca has worn scrubs to work since Oct. 22. That also marked the day she said the school’s principal sent her home because she refused to change her clothes. Abarca said she wears medical scrubs as personal protection equipment, not only to protect her students but also her young children at home. ....
