NEW DELHI: Contrary to the previously held belief that only one species of red panda is found in India, Indian scientists have established that India is home to both the Himalayan Red Panda (HRP) and the Chinese Red Panda (CRP).
In doing so they have also countered a Chinese study published in February 2020 which claimed that the CRP is not present in India.
Indian scientists, in this breakthrough study based on the DNA from faecal samples collected over a span of three years, have said that two phylogenetic (sub-species) of HRP and CRP exist in the country. ....

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 The Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) yesterday seized and removed four gibbons by force from a gibbon rehabilitation centre in Pahang operated by its former wildlife ranger, even as a court dispute over the gibbons remains pending, reports have said.
Even as Gibbon Rehabilitation Project’s (GReP) founder Mariani Ramli continues to pursue the court case at the Federal Court, Perhilitan had confiscated the gibbons by acting on a Court of Appeal decision in the government department’s favour. ....
