Family Farms Comprise 96 Percent of all U.S. Farms The United States Department of Agriculture s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) just released the 2017 Census of Agriculture Farm Typology report. It seems many times you hear in news reports indicating that cooperate farms are the dominate force in the United States. According to the USDA NASS Agriculture Farm Typology report family farms comprise 96 percent of all U.S. farms! Classifying America s 2 million farms to better reflect their diversity is critical to evaluating and reporting on U.S Agriculture, said NASS Administrator Hubert Hamer. Typology allows us to more meaningfully explore demographics of who is farming and ranching today as well as their impact on the economy and communities around the country. ....
Pierre, SD, USA / DRGNews Jan 25, 2021 2:08 PM Family farms comprise 96% of all U.S. farms, account for 87% of land in farms, and 82% of the value of all agricultural products sold, according to the 2017 Census of Agriculture Farm Typology report released (Jan. 22, 2021) by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). The farm typology report primarily focuses on the “family farm,” defined as any farm where the majority of the business is owned by the producer and individuals related to the producer. The report classifies all farms into unique categories based on two criteria: who owns the operation and gross cash farm income (GCFI). GCFI includes the producer’s sales of crops and livestock, fees for delivering commodities under production contracts, government payments, and farm-related income. ....
Press Release – On December 8, 2020, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released the 2019 Census of Horticultural Specialties report, the only source of detailed production and sales data for floriculture, nursery, and specialty crops for the entire United States. The data show that horticulture operations sold a total of $13.8 billion in floriculture, nursery and specialty crops in 2019, down fractionally from the sales in 2014. The number of horticulture operations in the United States decreased 11% during this time to 20,655. “First conducted in 1889, the horticulture census provides data on sectors for which there are no other comprehensive data sources,” said NASS Administrator Hubert Hamer. “It is a valuable tool to highlight the contribution horticulture growers bring to our local, state, and national economies as well as changes in the industry over the past five years.” ....
